Eva was at Katherine’s ho, the one Dante had given to her to stay in for the anwhile, helping her with the clothes she had bought for her after returning from the shopping mall.

"You know you don’t have to do any of this, right?" Katherine said, hesitating to touch the clothes.

"I know, but I still chose to do it," Eva replied with a smile. "Here, try this one. I’m not sure if it’s your size."

Katherine stared at the green top Eva was holding out to her. After everything that had happened at her house, after Mason’s death, Eva had been visiting so often that it almost seed like she lived there as well.

Katherine was still heartbroken over Mason’s death. But ever since then, she has co to realize a lot of things.

Death had taken the lives of her biological parents, yet she had completely forgotten how painful it had been. Now that Mason was dead, it felt like old wounds were reopening.

To think that she had once wished death upon the very sa woman who was treating her right, despite everything she had done to her in the past. Her little sister.

"Eva," Katherine called, her tone so soft and delicate that Eva’s eyebrows instantly furrowed. "I’ll be going back to prison soon. There’s no need for these clothes. They’re just going to go to waste."

Eva’s lips thinned.

She was very aware that Katherine would be going back to jail soon. It was already a cri for her and Dante to hide a runaway. At so point, Katherine needed to resu her punishnt.

"Things didn’t start off well between the two of us. I was jealous of your looks. Jealous of how people loved you and cast away like I was so monster. I wanted mom and dad to treat the sa way they treated you to the extent that I forgot that they loved too. I was jealous of your relationship with Nathan. I just wanted to have everything you had. And when I realized I couldn’t, I stole it." Katherine’s eyes pooled with tears as her heart clenched at her confession. "Even after everything I’ve done to you, you still chose to save my life. You had several chances to kill but..."

"I did," Eva cut in, pushing the shopping aside as she reached for Katherine’s hands. "But I believe everyone deserves a second chance, Keisha."

Katherine thought she would despise being called by that na, but hearing Eva say it one more ti made her break down before she could stop herself.

Imdiately, Eva pulled her into a hug, holding her close as Katherine sobbed into her shoulder.

"Please forgive , Eva," she pleaded. "I’ve been a terrible person to you, and you’ve only ever been kind to . I know forgiveness won’t fix the past, but..."

"Shh, it’s alright."

Katherine shook her head imdiately. "No, it’s not. I need to pay for my cris." She pulled away from Eva, whose eyes were already red and watery. "I’ll have to return to jail soon."

It was the bitter truth Eva didn’t want to accept. She had just found her sister after so many years of searching, and now they were about to be separated again.

Was she being selfish?

Eva was about to respond when her phone rang. Seeing it was her mother, she answered imdiately.

"There are a bunch of n here, Eva. They took your brother away," the woman cried into the phone.

Chills ran down Eva’s spine as every hair on her body stood on end.

The call suddenly cut off, as if sothing had intercepted it.

"What happened?" Katherine asked when she saw the panic on Eva’s face.

"I have to go ho. Sothing happened," Eva replied, urgency dripping from her voice. She picked up her bags, ready to leave imdiately.

Katherine’s brows furrowed in worry before she grabbed the nearest hoodie and pulled it on.

"I’m coming with you," she said, giving Jacob a quick instruction before they both left the house.

Eva’s parents were not even supposed to be in Lexora, but they had insisted on visiting because they missed her. Only for sothing like this to happen.

Eva’s heart pounded violently against her ribs, threatening to burst as her breathing accelerated.

Normally, it took Eva at least twenty five minutes to drive from Katherine’s place to her parents’ house. She arrived in fifteen minutes after breaking multiple speed limits.

There were no guards at the gate. It stood wide open, unattended.

Her heart skipped in fear.

She jumped out of the car and rushed inside, with Katherine following closely behind.

When they entered the house, the lights were off. The living room was pitch black, making it hard to see anything.

"Mom. Dad." Eva shouted, her voice trembling. There was no response, and goosebumps spread across her skin.

With shaking hands, she pulled out her phone and dialed her mother again while searching for the light switch. The call went straight to voicemail.

"This is not good," Katherine muttered, clutching the front of her hoodie tightly.

Eva finally found the switch and turned on the lights.

She had expected a wrecked living room, furniture displaced and things scattered everywhere.

But that was not what greeted her.

Red balloons hovered against the ceiling, with more scattered across the floor.

Her entire family stood there, including Maxine and Susan, all smiling. And then there was Dante, dressed in one of his finest suits, his hair perfectly combed back with a few strands falling over his forehead.

He looked majestic.

"Mom," Eva whispered. Her gaze shifted to her brothers, who looked perfectly unhard. "What’s going on?" she asked, confusion evident in her voice.

Adrian sighed. "Can’t you read what’s written on the wall?" he asked, gesturing toward the wall on her left.

Eva turned and saw balloons arranged into words.

She read them silently, her heart nearly stopping.

The words on the wall read:

Will you marry ?
