Listening to the familiar yet unfamiliar woman’s voice, Vera Sheridan felt a heaviness in her heart.
She wasn’t sure whether to feel relieved or disappointed.
In front of her, Ian Kane, as Nina had described, was wearing an apron, looking very much like a dostic, good man.
At that mont, a light woody fragrance filled the air, and the next second, a woman walked over to Ian.
She had black hair tied in a low ponytail parted in the middle, with golden hoop earrings. She wore a dium-length boyfriend-style white shirt, bare long legs, and flip-flops on her feet.
Seeing her, her eyes lit up, "Hi, Vera! It’s so late, what brings you here?"
"What are you two standing there for? Co in!"
She was Ian Kane’s sister, Thea Kane.
She had been working for years at the Elysia branch, responsible for the Kane Group’s e-comrce business.
Vera felt very confused.
Was she being played by Nina Sullivan again? Or was Ian covering up sothing?
The video that Nina showed was exactly what he looked like now...
Trying her best to stay calm, Vera forced a smile, "Sis, Ian’s been going out a lot at night lately, looking stressed. I’m worried, so I ca to check on him."
While speaking, she brushed past Ian and went in.
Ian closed the door, using a bit too much strength.
Vera’s heart jolted.
Thea crossed her arms and teased with a smile, "Ca to check on him, huh?"
Vera’s smile nearly froze, and she shook her head slightly, eting Ian’s sinister expression, exuding a low-pressure aura.
"Ian, why the face? Checking on him ans Vera cares about you!" Thea spoke bluntly.
Ian’s lips twitched slightly, casting Vera a sidelong glance, as if to say, "Is it care or mistrust?"
Vera’s whole body tensed up. The apartnt looked exactly like it did in Nina’s video, but where was Nina’s presence?
"Sis, when did you co back to the country? Ian didn’t ntion it." She asked calmly.
Thea coughed a few tis, "I’ve been back for a few days. Got pneumonia, and Ian’s been coming over every night to make soup, still adjusting to the ti difference."
Vera glanced at Ian, then said casually, "Your sister’s back, why didn’t you tell ?"
Ian gave her a glance, said nothing, and walked to the balcony.
Thea frowned, "What’s with his attitude! Vera, maybe he’s worried I’ll pass the infection to you. He just said he’d co to your place tomorrow, worried about bothering you."
Vera nodded with a smile, taking a glance at the four water glasses on the bar, still with lemon water in them, clearly indicating soone had been there.
Thea said, "Quentin Hawthorne and his girlfriend were just here; they live in the sa building."
Vera was taken aback.
So, was it really Nina playing her?
Looking at her watch, she smiled generously, "Sis, I was just worried about him, so I ca to check. Since everything’s fine, I’ll head back now."
Thea craned her neck towards the balcony, "Ian! Vera’s leaving!"
On the balcony, Ian crushed a cigarette, closed the window, and walked back over with a cold face.
Vera understood that from the mont he saw her, he guessed she was there to catch an affair.
The two of them said goodbye to Thea and entered the elevator one after the other.
The man’s dark face and silence.
Gave her a strong sense of oppression and suffocation.
Vera hesitated to speak several tis. The elevator stopped on the 17th floor, and the doors opened to noise and commotion.
"A sparrow dreaming of being a phoenix! Delusional! Drag her to the hospital!"
Soone was arguing.
Vera frowned as Ian pulled her arm, drawing her to the side, shielding her with his tall figure.
"I don’t want to go to the hospital, let go, this is illegal!"
Nina Sullivan’s voice ca through, with a sobbing tone.
Instinctively, Vera clenched her hands tightly.
The elevator doors were about to close, but were blocked from outside by a man in a black suit, resembling a bodyguard. A wealthy woman carrying a Hermès crocodile bag, enveloped in perfu, stepped inside.
Upon seeing Ian, her fierce expression imdiately turned into a flattering smile, "Ian, what a coincidence."
Ian responded politely, "Mrs. Hawthorne."
Vera also greeted, "Mrs. Hawthorne."
This lady was Quentin’s mother, the eldest lady of The Hawthorne Family.
Mrs. Hawthorne maintained an elegant and appropriate smile, but as soon as two bodyguards dragged Nina in, her expression changed dramatically, "Ian, Vera, I’m sorry to make you laugh."
"Just handling so private matters."
Nina’s face was covered in tears. Seeing Vera, her expression froze, "Ms., Ms. Sheridan, I, I’m pregnant with—"
"Slap."
Mrs. Hawthorne slapped her, "Shut up! The Hawthorne Family will never let you in!"
Nina’s cheek imdiately bore finger marks, tears streaming down as she stared blankly at the silent Ian.
He still refused to acknowledge her!
He let Mrs. Hawthorne believe the child was Quentin’s, taking her to have an abortion, putting on a show in front of Vera!
Vera noticed Nina’s gaze, recalling what she had said earlier, holding her breath.
Nina was gambling, betting that Ian would never truly make her get an abortion.
He wanted this child!
With the child, she would have her position!
With a determination, she moved to stand in front of Vera, tightly grasping her hands.
"Ms. Sheridan, I’m pregnant with Mr. Kane’s child, not Quentin’s. You have to believe !" Nina declared firmly.
