Lily Jones turned pale with anger, “Elly Campbell, what gives you the right to speak to like this? Who do you think you are? Do you believe I won’t tell my brother that you’re deliberately provoking ?”
Elly Campbell sneered contemptuously, “And on what grounds do you speak to this way? I owe nothing to the Jones family, and even less to you, Lily Jones. Do you just feel that I’ve taken the place of Adam Jones’s wife? Let tell you, Lily Jones, your brother just so happens to not want to divorce right now. If you irritate , I might just refuse to leave, clinging to the position of the Young Miss of the Jones family just to spite you. Anyone who covets Adam will forever be nothing more than a mistress who can’t show her face in public!!”
Both Lily Jones and Sophie Baker knew exactly who Elly Campbell’s last statent referred to. As soon as Elly finished speaking, Sophie’s face turned pale.
Being the daughter of a mistress, she knew all too well how embarrassing this status was in the eyes of high society. She had always longed for the position of the Jones Family’s Young Miss and had always felt that as long as Lily was there, there was hope for her.
If it had been before, she might have thought that what Elly had just said was presumptuous, but lately, she had definitely sensed that Adam truly did not want to divorce Elly. If he had really wanted to, he would have signed the papers four years ago.
In other words, Elly Campbell had just spoken with a lot of confidence.
If Elly did not want to divorce, and Adam intended to reconcile with her, then Sophie no longer had a chance. What then was the aning of all she had done over these years?
Sophie Baker’s face grew paler and paler, her eyes flickering with unwillingness and resentnt.
Before Lily could respond, Sophie hastily spoke up to stop her: “Lily, don’t upset Dr. Campbell. She’s a doctor, after all, and naturally wants what’s best for you. You’d better cooperate with Dr. Campbell and get a proper check-up, be a good girl.”
Lily always regarded Sophie Baker as her lifesaver and tended to follow her advice. Added to that, Elly Campbell’s words had indeed threatened her. If Elly truly refused to divorce, how then could Sophie marry her brother?
She did not want Sophie to be unfairly labeled as a mistress.
“I’ll listen to Sophie.”
Lily Jones gave Elly Campbell a challenging glance and then cooperated with her during the examination, answering each question Elly asked, lest she truly annoyed her and Elly decided to cling to the title of Mrs. Jones and refuse to divorce.
After the examination, Lily couldn’t help but retort sarcastically, “Elly Campbell, don’t flatter yourself. The last thing my brother lacks is won. Why would he cling to soone like you?”
Hearing this, Elly Campbell laughed indifferently, “Don’t get worked up. That threat was just to scare you. Let’s not even talk about Adam; just dealing with a little sister-in-law like you is more than I can bear. The position of the Jones Family’s Young Miss? Whoever wants it can have it—who cares!”
With that, she ignored Lily’s pallid face as she stord out the door.
Lily Jones’s face turned from green to white with anger. Pointing at the door that Elly had just slamd, she raged, “That wicked woman, what’s she so arrogant about? My brother doesn’t even want her anymore, what does she think she is? I must tell my brother and make her pay… it’s infuriating…”
While Sophie Baker was comforting Lily, she couldn’t help but wish that Lily would get so angry at Elly that sothing would happen to her.
If the only sister ended up in trouble because of Elly Campbell, she wondered if Adam would still be lenient towards Elly.
