This was a genuine surprise, as I didn’t expect the governnt would make a move to invite a student into their fold—especially since I had yet to reach the contribution points necessary for graduation.
Rooted to the spot, I kept glaring at the file in their hands while blinking repeatedly.
Ding!
The door slid open with the sound of a bell, and loud cheers erupted from behind.
"Let’s find sowhere quiet and talk about this," I said with narrowed eyes before looking over my shoulder—only to see a massive crowd held back by guards dressed in black, just like the agents.
Without saying a word, I turned around to face the crowd. There was a dia team up front from different news agencies, recording with caras that were much better than the ones obsessed with taking pictures upstairs.
They scread their questions, but their words drowned beneath the frantic cheers of the crowd behind them.
This was what truly shook .
The crowd in the back were civilians. re civilians who had co to see the man who survived what Sergeant Deacon couldn’t. They carried cardboards with different positive ssages like "Get well soon" and even "The strongest survives," waving them frantically and cheering at the top of their lungs as soon as they saw .
This was the power of the dia.
How could the world cheer for when soone like Dayvon, who was clearly stronger, existed? I also imagined all this support would vanish if I refused the deal offered by the governnt.
In the end, I was just a Limitless who presented himself and captured the hearts of the people—not just with bold declarations, but with action. They had extended a hand in recognition of my effort. Rejecting it would be foolish.
Shifting my gaze to Jake, it seed he was more stunned than I was.
"I promised you a life greater than what your counterparts could wish for," I said. "That journey starts today. Are you ready?"
It took him a second to recover from his shock before shifting his excited gaze toward and nodding vigorously.
"Good... let’s steal the spotlight."
With that said, we walked out of the elevator and headed directly for the building exit. Upon reaching the crowd, their cheers were deafening—to the point where Jake even had to cover his ears in discomfort. But I braved through it with a calm face, showing no signs of weakness.
I am the strongest, after all.
Exiting the building was easy since a clear path had already been made for us. However, upon walking out of the building, there was another crowd outside—but this ti, they were held back by the military, with Colonel Silas, Major Miller, and Kenza standing near the entrance, waiting patiently.
As soon as they saw us, their faces lit up. However, once they noticed Agent Ray and Johnson, their smiles slowly faded, turning into cold frowns.
Even though we weren’t soldiers anymore, Jake and I saluted the Colonel, and the lost smile returned. The old man climbed up the stairs with a blue-bound docunt in hand—just like the agents.
"I knew you were special from the very day I saw you. It’s great to see you’ve fully recovered." The Colonel extended his hand for a handshake, and I took it.
"Thank you for the kind words," I smiled at him warmly.
Now that I had the popularity, there was no reason to antagonize any side.
The docunt in his hand was another offer, but this ti from the military. It seed Johnson’s talk about my rising fa and the urgency to get on their side wasn’t an exaggeration.
However, I had no plans of joining the military.
State-contracted Limitless could live peaceful lives, enjoying the wealth of the state while getting mouthwatering gigs and contracts from various sectors. It was the best path if you were aiming for fa and wealth.
On the other hand, Limitless who worked for the military were moved from one country to the next on peacekeeping missions and more. Occasionally, they assisted state Limitless in rift raids, but their major role was dealing with the aftermath of failed rift operations.
While that might help gain more experience and understanding of this world, I wasn’t interested in this world. I was far more interested in the worlds on the other side of the rift—and the only way to explore that was to join the state.
I also didn’t bother with a conversation with Pala because private agencies were far worse than the military. They were like rcenaries, backing whichever side could pay for their services.
While this ant safety—since they rarely participated in expeditions—safety was the last thing I wanted right now.
"I see we were a step behind." Colonel Silas’ smile faded as he looked past and glared at the blue-bound docunt in Agent Johnson’s hand. "Have you already co to a decision?" he asked.
Feigning an apologetic smile, I nodded.
"I may have chosen this path, but feel free to call on anyti you need my help," I said, and the old Colonel laughed while patting my back.
"You’re a good kid. Our country is truly blessed to have a patriotic Limitless in these turbulent tis," he said with a friendly smile. "I’ll keep your offer in mind."
"And I’ll make sure to rember my promise," I responded quickly.
Colonel Silas laughed again before shooting Jake a glance—only for a mont—then walked away. Kenza looked disappointed by my choice, while Major Miller didn’t seem to care much.
’Bitch-ass bastard, I nearly died under your command!’ I cursed in my heart.
They had nothing to say to and simply followed the Colonel back to the convoy of military jeeps. Soon, all the military personnel abandoned their posts, returned to their vehicles, and drove off in barely a minute.
I watched in silence as a new row of black jeeps replaced them—these belonged to the agency—but I had no plans of using them.
My gaze drifted to the sidewalk leading into the hospital grounds, where agents in black were blocking a black sedan from entering.
That was Mandy.
I had called her to pick us up before returning to the hospital with Jake.
"Your people are stopping my driver from getting in," I turned to Ray, and he took off his glasses with a shocked expression.
"Your personal driver?" he blurted out. "Where?"
Calmly, I pointed at the black sedan, and he made the sa "ooh" face.
"I’ll deal with this," he said with an apologetic look before running off.
My gaze shifted to Agent Johnson as soon as Ray left, and I asked the question I’d been holding in for a while.
"We need to go to a quiet place where I can review the contract before signing. Do you have a place in mind?"
