The Hall of Passage was built to inspire awe.

Three towering archways dominated the chamber, each carved with the sigils of one of Umbral’s ruling Houses. Where they t in the center, a platform of crystallized shadow held the space where climbers would present their seals and receive permission to advance.

Dante stood before the platform with his team arrayed behind him, the three House seals arranged in his hands like fragnts of a promise. Representatives from each House occupied their designated positions: Councilor Thaelan for Velran, Commander Vahren for Morveth, and the ancient Draveth for Silren.

Across the hall, Adrian waited with his own group, his expression neutral despite the tension that crackled between them.

"We are gathered to witness passage," Draveth intoned, his voice carrying through the hall with ceremonial weight. "Two parties have earned the approval of all three Houses. Two parties shall ascend to Floor 16."

The words felt hollow. Everyone in the room knew that what happened today wasn’t about ceremony or tradition. It was about power, and who would wield it when the day was done.

"Present your seals."

Dante stepped forward and placed the three fragnts on the platform.

The mont they touched, sothing ignited.

The ceremony magic was old, woven into the hall’s foundations by the sa beings who’d built the Tower itself. When the seals connected, that magic surged through the chamber in waves of purple-gold light, filling the air with power that made Dante’s skin prickle with recognition.

His Ancient Core recognized it too.

It recognized it almost too well.

The destabilization building for weeks suddenly accelerated, as if the ceremony’s energy was acting as a catalyst for sothing waiting to explode. Dante felt his mana system scream in protest, felt the Core’s power trying to tear itself free of the constraints that kept it contained.

’Not now,’ he thought desperately. ’Not here.’

But the Core didn’t care about timing.

He collapsed.

"Dante!" Ravenna was there first, catching him before he hit the platform. His eyes were blazing with green-gold light that spilled from cracks forming across his skin.

"The Core," Sera pushed through the gathered witnesses. "The ceremony triggered a cascade, his system is collapsing."

"Can you stop it?"

"I can try." Sera dropped to her knees beside him, her hands already glowing with healing magic. "Everyone back. Whatever happens next, you don’t want to be close to it."

The team retreated, forming a protective circle as Sera began the work she’d spent weeks preparing for. This was the mont. This was everything.

She just hoped it would be enough.

Healing magic flowed into Dante’s system, but it wasn’t enough. The Ancient Core was an artifact from before the Tower’s current age, designed by beings who understood power in ways that humans could barely imagine.

The Ancient Core was an artifact from before the Tower’s current age, designed by beings who understood power in ways that humans could barely imagine. Trying to stabilize it with conventional healing was like trying to put out a wildfire with a garden hose.

Sera could feel the energy fighting her, feel the Core’s ancient will resisting any attempt at control to impose order on its chaos.

’Not control,’ sothing whispered in her mory. Dante’s voice, describing what he’d learned in his dreams. ’Harmony. The answer is harmony, not control.’

She shifted her approach.

Instead of trying to force the Core’s energy into proper channels, she started listening to it. Feeling the patterns it wanted to follow, the configurations that felt natural to sothing ancient and hungry and powerful.

The Core wasn’t fighting Dante’s body because it hated him. It was fighting because it was trying to evolve, trying to beco sothing more than it had been, and his mana system didn’t have the frawork to support the transformation.

So she would give it one.

Sera reached deeper into her healing magic than she’d ever gone before, past the techniques she’d learned and into territory that was pure instinct. She found the places where Dante’s mana system was breaking and, instead of repairing them, she rebuilt them entirely.

New channels ford where old ones had failed. New pathways opened that hadn’t existed before. New connections linked the Ancient Core to Dante’s spirit in ways that changed both of them fundantally.

The light blazing from his body shifted from chaotic violence to sothing more structured, more intentional. The green-gold energy tearing him apart began flowing smoothly, cycling through a system that could finally contain it.

"That’s it," Sera breathed. "That’s what you needed. Not a cage. A partner."

The Core pulsed once, twice, three tis.

Then it stabilized.

Dante opened his eyes to find Sera collapsed beside him. "Sera." He reached for her, pulling her up despite his own disorientation.

"Sera, can you hear ?"

"Tired." The word ca out barely audible. "Did everything. Gave everything. Did it work?"

He checked his internal systems, feeling for the destabilization killing him for weeks.

It was gone.

Not suppressed, not delayed, gone. His mana system had fundantally changed, evolved into sothing capable of containing the Ancient Core’s power without tearing itself apart. The energy fighting him now flowed in harmony, power and vessel finally matched.

"It worked," he said, and his voice ca out strange, resonant in ways it hadn’t been before. "You saved my life."

Sera managed sothing that was almost a smile.

"That’s what teammates do."

She passed out in his arms.

---

The Hall of Passage went silent.

Representatives from all three Houses stared at what had just happened, at the climber who’d died and been reborn in the middle of their ceremony. The platform beneath Dante still glowed with the light of the assembled seals, but that glow was nothing compared to what now radiated from him.

Evolved.

The word echoed through Dante’s mind as he laid Sera gently aside and rose to his feet. His system had leveled up in the most fundantal way possible, his Mana Core advancing from Nascent to Stable stage. The power that flowed through him now was one and a half tis what it was before, and more importantly, it was finally under control.

The ceremony lights flickered, and then they bowed.

Every bioluminescent source in the hall, every magical light and crystalline glow, bent toward Dante like plants bending toward the sun. The ancient magic woven into the building’s foundations recognized what he’d beco and acknowledged it in the only way it knew how.

"What the hell?" soone whispered.

Adrian’s face had gone pale.

"The passage is granted," Draveth said, his voice carrying an edge of sothing that might have been awe. "Dante Graves and his team... are approved for Floor 16."

The old Noctis paused, studying Dante with eyes that had seen thousands of years.

"What you are now," he said quietly, "is sothing this floor has not witnessed in centuries. Climb carefully. What waits above will be watching."

"Let them watch."

Dante gathered Sera into his arms, cradling the healer who’d just changed everything, and turned to face his team.

"We’re done here."

---

Adrian received his passage too, approved through Morveth’s corrupted representatives, but nobody was paying attention to him anymore. The golden boy who’d been so confident, so assured of his superiority, now looked small standing in the shadow of what Dante had beco.

"This isn’t over," Adrian called out as Dante walked toward the exit.

"No." Dante didn’t slow down. "It’s just beginning."

The team fell in around him: Ravenna at his side, Astrid and Ren flanking, Vex sowhere above where he’d found a vantage point, Leon helping support Sera’s unconscious form. Torian, Vanya, and Helena completed the formation, the forr probationers now fully part of sothing they never expected to join.

They left the Hall of Passage behind, stepping into Umbral’s twilight streets for the last ti.

---

That night, Sera woke to find Dante sitting beside her bed.

"You should be resting," she said, her voice hoarse.

"I did rest. For about an hour." He offered her water, which she accepted gratefully. "How do you feel?"

"Like soone scooped out my insides and put them back in the wrong order." She managed to sit up, wincing at muscles that didn’t want to cooperate. "The Core stabilized?"

"More than stabilized. Evolved." He showed her his hand, and faint traceries of green-gold light pulsed beneath his skin in patterns that looked almost like circuitry. "You didn’t just fix what was broken. You rebuilt it better than it was before."

"I didn’t know that was possible."

"Neither did I." He was quiet for a mont. "You’re not just the healer anymore, Sera. What you did in there, that’s not sothing a normal healer could accomplish. You touched sothing ancient and helped it beco what it was ant to be."

"I just... listened." She looked at her own hands, rembering the way the magic had flowed through her. "The Core knew what it needed. I just helped it get there."

"That’s what made you succeed where everyone else would have failed." Dante stood, moving toward the door. "Rest. Tomorrow we move to Floor 16. Whatever’s waiting up there, we face it together."

"Dante?"

He paused.

"Thank you," she said quietly. "For trusting with this. For believing I could do sothing I wasn’t sure I could do myself."

"That’s what teammates do."

He left her alone with the darkness and the slowly returning strength in her limbs.

Tomorrow, a new floor. But tonight, she’d rest knowing that she’d accomplished sothing impossible: she’d saved the person who was going to save them all.
