Chapter 442: Chapter 442: Proving Innocence through Devotion

Sister Zhou saw a trace of complex emotion on Lin Zhiyi’s face and didn’t care whether Gong Chen was there or not.

She pulled Lin Zhiyi inside.

Lin Zhiyi told Xingxing to go to her room to play, while she made tea for Sister Zhou.

The house furnishings were the sa as before, so she found things easily.

Lin Zhiyi stared at the kettle and frowned, “Sister Zhou, please wait a bit longer, the water will be ready soon.”

Sister Zhou didn’t care about the tea; she stood eagerly at the kitchen door and spoke up.

“Zhiyi, I’m not lying. If you don’t believe , you can check the surveillance at my house. Ever since you left, I got scared living alone, so I installed caras.”

“I never said I don’t believe you.” Lin Zhiyi forced a smile.

Sister Zhou frowned at Lin Zhiyi’s reluctant expression and continued, “Zhiyi, you’re scared, aren’t you?”

“No.”

Lin Zhiyi turned sideways, absent-mindedly reaching for the kettle, almost getting scalded by the steam.

Sister Zhou hurriedly grabbed her hand and ran it under cold water.

She sighed helplessly, “You’re like this, holding everything inside, even when separation is so painful, you still have to pretend.”

Lin Zhiyi curled her fingers and chuckled bitterly.

“Sister Zhou, I’m really scared.”

“Returning to Jing City makes this fear more evident. I’m afraid of facing the past all over again.”

In Gang City, she could rightfully assure herself that no one could force her anymore.

But now, she seed to have returned to the vortex.

Especially hearing that Old Mr. Gong was secretly introducing other won to Gong Chen.

She realized she had overestimated herself.

It felt like everything in Gang City was just a dream.

Lin Zhiyi wiped her slightly reddened hand, speaking sowhat to herself.

“I keep wondering if his previous promises were lies to .”

“Will he use my daughter to threaten ?”

“Will another unavoidable reason appear, causing Xingxing and to repeat the past?”

“He has so many choices, but I have none. Will I beco the sacrificed one again? What about my daughter then?”

“But who am I to demand from others? He did help .”

“Sister Zhou, I made the wrong choice, didn’t I? I shouldn’t have followed him back to Jing City. I know I will regret this!”

“Ultimately, I hate myself!”

Lin Zhiyi spoke incoherently, yet her mind was exceptionally clear.

She feared that in the end, all this would lead to another hate.

Sister Zhou pondered for a mont before understanding it.

Lin Zhiyi had been hurt too deeply in the past, leading to this stress reaction upon returning to Jing City.

She severely lacked a sense of security.

Sister Zhou tightly held Lin Zhiyi’s hand, comforting her, “Zhiyi, you’re not wrong. Ideally, I should speak so good words for Third Young Master as flattery, but I won’t. I’ll always stand by your side.”

Hearing this, Lin Zhiyi was unexpectedly amused, feeling both sad and wanting to laugh, awkward to the extre.

“Sister Zhou, don’t tease .”

“Want to speak a little out of politeness?” Sister Zhou walked to the kitchen door and pointed at the doorway, “For over three years, every ti I return, I see Third Young Master standing outside, waiting for soone impossible to open the door for him.”

“Zhiyi, you know him better than I do. If he didn’t care about you, why bother with this?”

Lin Zhiyi followed her gaze to the tightly closed door.

The agitation she felt gradually cald down.

Sister Zhou didn’t say much more; she accompanied her for a cup of tea, seeing her needing to care for her child didn’t disturb her further.

Even Xingxing noticed her mood wasn’t good, not ntioning Gong Chen until bedti.

Lin Zhiyi took a deep breath, and patted Xingxing’s hair.

“Xingxing, I’m sorry.”

Xingxing shook her head, leaning against Lin Zhiyi, “Mom, you’re the best mom.”

Lin Zhiyi felt a surge of emotion, hugging her tightly and gently patting her back.

“Sleep now.”

Having rushed around all day, Xingxing quickly fell asleep.

Lin Zhiyi gently laid her down, covered her with the quilt, and exited the room.

Returning to the bedroom, she turned on the light, startled by a silhouette sitting by the window.

She stared at the man, “Third Young Master, when did you co? Why didn’t you make a sound?”

“Seeing you coaxing Xingxing to sleep, I didn’t want to disturb.” Gong Chen finished, staring intently at Lin Zhiyi, “Zhiyi, co here.”

“No, I’m a bit tired and want to sleep early.” Lin Zhiyi gripped the door handle, gesturing for him to leave.

Gong Chen got up, stopped in front of her.

“Zhiyi, if you won’t step forward, then I’ll co to you.”

“…”

Lin Zhiyi was slightly stunned.

Gong Chen pulled her stiff hand, sitting down at the small table.

Imdiately, a plate of steaming pastries was pushed before her.

“Didn’t you post on social dia about wanting to eat?”

“That was a long ti ago, and I’ve already had it.” Lin Zhiyi responded.

“It’s different.” Gong Chen handed her a pair of chopsticks.

Lin Zhiyi initially thought he ant a new release, but upon closer look, these were the exact treats she had posted over three years ago on her social dia.

Identical.

If she rembered correctly, the chestnut cake was difficult to buy, always needing a long wait.

She looked at Gong Chen in surprise, “Did you just go out to buy these pastries?”

“What else?” Gong Chen slightly rested his cheek on his palm, “Go back and find a woman to sleep with?”

“Cough, cough…”

Lin Zhiyi took a bite of chestnut cake, shocked by his words and started coughing.

Gong Chen moved his chair closer, casually patting her back.

She recalled Sister Zhou’s words, pursed her lips, “I, I’m not implying that, I’m just about myself…”

Before she could finish, the man’s fingers touched her cheek, brushing her lips.

“You have cake on you.”

“I…”

Lin Zhiyi wanted to clarify the events of the past few days.

But before saying another word, the man kissed her.

He pressed her lightly, “Is this clear enough?”

“No, I… mmm.”

“How about this?” The man kissed again.

“Can you let …” finish speaking.

Evidently not.

Gong Chen pulled her, chair and all, closer, leaned in for a deep kiss.

Finally, after a long while, Gong Chen released Lin Zhiyi.

Lin Zhiyi’s cheeks were crimson, taking a long mont to catch her breath.

“It’s too sweet.” Gong Chen frowned.

“Chestnut cake isn’t sweet.”

“Not the chestnut cake.” Gong Chen glanced at Lin Zhiyi’s reddened lips, his voice hoarse, “Zhiyi, pastries are pastries, you are you, I know exactly what I want.”

Lin Zhiyi took a mont to understand the aning behind his words.

She intended to get up, but Gong Chen held her hands down on her lap, using the other hand to loosen his tie and buttons.

“If you don’t believe, I can only prove my innocence by giving myself.”

“Hey, hey, hey… talk properly.”

Lin Zhiyi struggled to move her body.

Gong Chen pulled her onto his lap, pressing her head down and kissed passionately.

“Zhiyi.”

“Mm?”

“Don’t leave , I won’t let you regret again…”

His breathing beca deeper.

The kiss tantalizingly moved from lips downward.

Lin Zhiyi was a bit tense, but still slowly closed her eyes.

Except…

When she looped her hand around Gong Chen’s neck, she felt his skin excessively warm.

“Third Young Master, you’re running a fever.”
