The training grounds were alive with activity when Grim arrived for his scheduled session with Xùyán.

Word had spread that the human lord would be demonstrating advanced techniques, and dozens of fox spirits had gathered to observe what promised to be an enlightening display.

"Lord Ambrose," Xùyán called out with his characteristic smugness, approaching with a elaborate bow that managed to convey both respect and mockery.

"I trust you’re prepared for a more educational experience than our previous encounter."

Several fox spirits chuckled at the obvious provocation. Xùyán had clearly been planning this mont since their last duel, when Grim had managed to hold his own despite the illusion techniques.

"I’m always prepared to learn," Grim replied carefully, trying to keep his voice level despite the corruption whispering suggestions about crushing Xùyán’s arrogance permanently.

"Excellent," Xùyán said with predatory satisfaction. "Today we’ll explore the differences between human and fox spirit approaches to combat magic. I believe the demonstration will prove illuminating."

"Standard rules," Commander Liú announced. "Serious injury is prohibited, though aningful contact is permitted. The match ends when one participant yields or is rendered unable to continue."

Grim nodded his acceptance while circulating mana through his body to prepare for combat.

His vision sharpened further, revealing the magical auras of everyone present like flickering flas around their bodies.

"Begin when ready," Liú declared, stepping back to give them space.

Xùyán imdiately launched into his signature technique, splitting into three identical figures that moved with perfect coordination around Grim’s position.

Unlike their previous encounter, these illusions felt more solid and threatening, suggesting Xùyán had been practicing specifically for this rematch.

Grim responded with a basic water technique, sending arcing streams toward each figure to test their solidity.

Two passed through harmlessly, but the third deflected the attack with a barrier of fire, revealing Xùyán’s true position.

"Better," Xùyán acknowledged, though his tone carried disappointnt. "Though I notice you’re holding back. Are you afraid of showing your real abilities in front of our audience?"

"I’m being respectful of our surroundings," Grim replied through gritted teeth, forcing himself to maintain defensive positioning rather than launching an overwhelming counterattack.

"Respectful?" Xùyán laughed, his illusions moving closer with obvious confidence. "Or simply weak? I’ve heard rumors about your... condition. So say you’re not entirely human anymore."

The comnt sent a shock of recognition through the gathered crowd. Several fox spirits exchanged aningful glances.

"Careful, Xùyán," he warned, his voice carrying an edge that made several observers step back instinctively. "You’re treading on dangerous ground."

"Am I?" Xùyán pressed, clearly emboldened by what he interpreted as defensive behavior. "Then perhaps you should demonstrate why I should be concerned."

The challenge hung in the air like a thrown gauntlet. Grim could feel every eye upon him, waiting to see how he would respond to such blatant disrespect.

[Don’t give in,] Caius warned urgently from within his consciousness. [This is exactly what the dark mana wants—an excuse to manifest its influence publicly.]

But Xùyán wasn’t finished. His three figures began launching coordinated attacks—streams of fire from multiple angles designed to force Grim into increasingly desperate defensive position.

"Co now, Lord Ambrose," Xùyán called out mockingly as Grim dodged another barrage.

"Surely the great human lord can do better than this pathetic display. Or perhaps the rumors about your declining abilities are true."

"What rumors?" Grim demanded.

"That your recent experiences have left you damaged," Xùyán replied with cruel satisfaction.

"That whatever power you once possessed has been corrupted into sothing unstable and dangerous. Perhaps Princess Ruxi should reconsider her choice of suitor."

The ntion of Ruxi was the final provocation.

His eyes turned purple and his scarred glowed purple faintly.

"You want to see what I’ve beco?" Grim said, his voice carrying an echo that made the words seem to co from multiple sources. "Let show you."

The transformation sent ripples of shock through the gathered crowd. Several fox spirits backed away instinctively.

Xùyán’s confident expression faltered as he recognized that sothing.

The illusions he’d been maintaining flickered and wavered as his concentration broke under the weight of sudden apprehension.

"What—" Xùyán began, but Grim was already moving.

The speed was inhuman. One mont Grim stood in the center of the combat area, the next he appeared directly in front of Xùyán’s true body.

Xùyán tried to dodge, but Grim’s enhanced perception made the movent seem sluggish and predictable.

"Is this what you wanted to see?" Grim asked, advancing on his fallen opponent with deliberate nace. "The true extent of what I’ve beco?"

Xùyán scrambled to his feet, launching a desperate barrage of fire techniques that should have forced any reasonable opponent to maintain distance.

Instead, Grim walked through the flas like they were re illusions. The heat from the flas felt like tap water.

"Stop," Xùyán gasped, raising his hands in surrender as Grim closed the distance between them. "I yie...."

Grim’s hand shot forward, dark mana coalescing around his fingers as he reached for Xùyán’s throat. The fox spirit’s eyes widened with genuine terror as he realized that his opponent was no longer fully in control of his actions.

"Enough!" Commander Liú’s voice cracked like a whip across the training ground.

The military leader positioned himself between Grim and Xùyán with hands raised in a gesture that was both protective and warning.

"The match is concluded," Liú declared firmly. "Lord Ambrose, step back and control yourself."

For a mont it seed uncertain whether Grim would comply.

The dark mana raged against any attempt at restraint.

Then, gradually, rationality began to reassert itself. Grim forced the corruption back down. His eyes shifted back to their normal color, though the scar continued to pulse with faint purple light.

"My apologies," he said stiffly, stepping back from both Xùyán and Commander Liú. "But, when you insult , you have to pay a price."

The training ground fell silent except for the sound of Xùyán’s labored breathing and the distant calls of birds in the surrounding forest. Every fox spirit present had witnessed sothing that confird their worst fears about human nature.

Murmurs rippled through the crowd as fox spirits began discussing what they’d seen. The consensus was clearly forming that Grim represented a threat.

"Lord Ambrose," Elder Míngzhì sprung from the crowd addressing Grim directly, "what explanation can you provide for this display of uncontrolled power?"

Grim realized that any answer he gave would be evaluated not just by the elder but by everyone present.

"Dark mana," he said finally, deciding that partial honesty was preferable to lies that would eventually be exposed. "I was... exposed to corruption that I’m still learning to control."

The admission created an imdiate stir among the observers. Dark mana was known to fox spirits as sothing inherently dangerous and destabilizing—the kind of influence that could corrupt entire communities if left unchecked.

"And you ca to our realm carrying such corruption?" Míngzhì demanded with obvious outrage. "Did you consider the potential consequences for our people?"

"I considered them," Grim replied. "Which is why I’ve been working to control the influence rather than surrender to it."

"Your control appeared quite limited during this demonstration," the elder observed coldly.

"It was," Grim admitted. "And that concerns as much as it concerns you."

The honesty seed to catch Míngzhì off guard. He had clearly expected defensiveness or denial rather than acknowledgnt of the problem’s severity.

"At least you’re not attempting to minimize the danger," the elder said grudgingly. "Though that raises questions about whether our realm is an appropriate place for soone struggling."

Before Grim could respond, another voice cut across the training ground.

"The real question," Princess Ruxi said as she approached the group, "is whether Lord Ambrose is fighting the corruption or learning to master it."

Her arrival created another stir among the observers. Ruxi’s defense of Grim despite what they’d just witnessed would be interpreted as either loyalty or dangerous naivety.

"Princess," Elder Míngzhì said with careful respect, "surely you recognize the threat such corruption poses to our realm."

"I recognize that Lord Ambrose stopped himself before causing serious harm," she replied firmly. "Soone truly controlled by dark influences wouldn’t have shown such restraint."

"Restraint?" the elder asked incredulously. "He nearly killed Xùyán!"

"Nearly," Ruxi emphasized. "But didn’t. That distinction matters."

The debate continued around him, but Grim found himself focused on the implications of what had just occurred.

[The damage may be irreversible,] Caius observed grimly. [They’ve seen what you could beco if the corruption takes hold completely.]

"I know," Grim replied silently, watching as fox spirits continued to discuss his display in hushed, concerned tones.
