The following morning found Grim went to find Shen Lao in his private quarters in the Sect.

A spacious room that had been converted into a combination library and laboratory. Ancient texts lined the walls while various alchemical apparatus occupied several tables, creating an atmosphere of scholarly pursuit that the dragon seed to find deeply satisfying.

"Lord Ambrose," Shen Lao said, looking up from a manuscript he had been examining, "to what do I owe this unexpected visit?"

"I wanted to discuss a matter of mutual benefit," Grim began, settling into the chair across from the dragon’s desk. "Sothing that could advance both our interests."

Shen Lao’s eyes glead with curiosity, though his expression remained carefully neutral. "I’m intrigued. What kind of mutual benefit did you have in mind?"

"A contract," Grim said directly. "I want to form a formal agreent that would allow to access dragon techniques and, in turn, grant others access to those sa abilities through their service to House Ambrose."

The dragon’s eyebrows rose with genuine surprise. "You know about the contract system? That’s... unexpected. Most humans believe that martial techniques can simply be learned through practice and determination. They might be able learn so techniques and enhance it with magic. But it would just be cheap immations."

"Most humans are wrong about many things," Grim replied. "I’ve recently learned that true power requires formal agreents with those who possess it."

"Indeed it does," Shen Lao agreed, leaning back in his chair with obvious interest. "The question is, what makes you think I would be willing to enter into such an arrangent?"

"Because you’re currently a guest in my ho with limited resources and no clear path to your long-term goals," Grim said with honesty. "A formal contract would provide you with security, purpose, and the opportunity to see your knowledge passed on to worthy students."

"And what would you gain in return?"

"The ability to build a cultivation sect with exclusive abilities, and a foundation for expanding House Ambrose’s influence," Grim replied without hesitation.

Shen Lao studied him for a long mont, his ancient eyes taking in details that spoke to changes beyond simple political ambition.

"You’re different from when we first t," the dragon observed. "There’s sothing harder about you now, sothing more... decisive."

"I’ve learned that indecision is a luxury I can’t afford," Grim said carefully.

"Hmm," Shen Lao mused. "And this contract—you understand that it would bind you as much as it binds ? That the techniques I could share would co with obligations and limitations?"

"I understand."

"Do you?" the dragon asked with penetrating intensity. "Because dragon techniques aren’t simply martial skills to be learned and forgotten. They beco part of who you are, changing not just your abilities but your very nature."

The warning carried weight that Grim couldn’t ignore, especially given his recent experiences with corruption and transformation.

"What kind of changes?" he asked.

"Power always changes those who wield it," Shen Lao replied philosophically. "Dragon techniques tend to enhance certain traits—confidence, decisiveness, the willingness to take action when others hesitate. These can be valuable qualities, but they can also beco problematic if not properly balanced."

"And you’re concerned that I’m already struggling with such balance?"

"I’m concerned that you’re on a path that could lead to isolation and conflict," Shen Lao said with surprising directness. "The rumors circulating about you suggest soone whose judgnt has beco... questionable."

The reference to the rumor campaign sent a pulse of anger through Grim’s system, but he forced himself to maintain composure.

"Those rumors are manufactured by enemies who fear direct confrontation," he said coldly.

"Perhaps," Shen Lao agreed. "But even manufactured rumors often contain kernels of truth. Did you or did you not break the arm of a surrendering opponent?"

"I responded appropriately to a threat disguised as diplomacy," Grim replied, his voice carrying those subtle harmonics.

Shen Lao’s eyes sharpened with recognition. "Interesting. That harmonic distortion in your voice—it suggests exposure to forces that most humans never encounter."

The observation was uncomfortably perceptive, and Grim felt his carefully maintained composure slip slightly.

"I don’t know what you an."

"Don’t you?" the dragon asked with knowing amusent. "Lord Ambrose, I have lived for centuries and encountered many forms of power. What I’m sensing from you is not entirely natural, but not entirely artificial either."

The conversation was moving into dangerous territory, but Grim found himself reluctant to end it. Shen Lao’s knowledge and experience might provide insights that he desperately needed.

"Assuming you’re correct," Grim said carefully, "would that affect your willingness to form a contract?"

"That depends," Shen Lao replied thoughtfully, "on whether you’re in control of those forces or being controlled by them."

The question struck closer to ho than Grim wanted to admit. The dark mana’s influence had beco so intertwined with his own thoughts and decisions that distinguishing between his will and its whispers had beco increasingly difficult.

"What if the answer isn’t that simple?" he asked.

"Then perhaps we need to discuss more than just martial techniques," Shen Lao said with unexpected compassion. "Power without wisdom leads to destruction, Lord Ambrose. If you’re struggling with forces beyond your understanding, a contract with might provide not just abilities, but guidance."

The offer was tempting in ways that went beyond simple political advantage. The prospect of having soone with Shen Lao’s experience and knowledge as an ally in navigating the corruption’s influence felt like a lifeline he hadn’t realized he needed.

"What would you require in return?" Grim asked.

"Just two things I’ll need if you want this," Shen Lao replied, his tone becoming more businesslike. "First, complete honesty about your circumstances."

"I want to see my daughter," Shen Lao said with sudden vulnerability. "Lin has been away for too long, pursuing her own path. If I’m going to bind myself to your house through a formal contract, I want the opportunity to spend ti with her, to ensure she’s well and happy."

The request was unexpected but entirely reasonable. Grim had spent a good amount of ti with Lin. And Shen Lao didn’t know he had a way to summon her quickly.

"I can arrange for her to visit the Empire," Grim said imdiately. "Transportation, accommodations, whatever she needs."

"You would do that?" Shen Lao asked with obvious surprise.

"Family is important," Grim replied, thinking of his own complicated relationship with his heritage. "If seeing your daughter is part of the price for this alliance, it’s a price I’m willing to pay."

Shen Lao studied him for several long monts, his ancient eyes seeming to peer into the depths of Grim’s soul.

"Very well," he said finally. "Arrange for Lin’s visit, and we’ll discuss the terms of our contract once she arrives. But I want your word that you’ll be completely honest with about your circumstances."

"You’ll have it," Grim agreed. "But know this, their will co a ti when a war starts and I will use the sect to fight and end the war."

"Human squabbles are irrelevant. But, this is good news." Shen Lao said with satisfaction. "I believe this arrangent could benefit us both, though I suspect it will be more complex than either of us can imagine."

As Grim departed from the dragon’s quarters, he felt a mixture of anticipation and apprehension.

[Be careful what you promise,] Caius warned quietly. [Dragons are ancient and wise, but they also have their own agendas. Make sure this alliance serves your interests, not just his.]

"I understand the risks," Grim replied silently. "But I also understand the necessity. If I’m going to face what’s coming, I need every advantage I can get."

[Including the advantage of having soone who might be able to help you understand what’s happening to you,] Caius observed with grudging approval. [Perhaps Shen Lao’s guidance could be valuable in ways that go beyond martial techniques.]
