No sooner had they left the compound than the gossip started in the courtyard: “Director Lu’s spouse is too polite. The gifts they return are even more than what we brought, making us feel embarrassed.”

Kang Huaiqing always felt his wife was off today, when had she ever been so generous and sensible? But since she insisted on making ands with Director Lu, he couldn’t refuse.
The couple carried the gifts out the door, heading straight for Lu Yichen’s house.
But they’d barely left the courtyard when Kang Huaiqing almost slipped: “Who the hell poured water out here, seriously lacking virtue.”
Only then did Mao Yunshang rember her careless spill in her excitent: “Stop complaining and let’s go.”
When they arrived at Director Lu’s, they were greeted by Iron General, leaving Mao Yunshang a bit taken aback. She went to ask Zhou Aiqing across the street: “Teacher Kang, where is Director Lu’s family?”
Turning, Kang Yanli saw Mao Yunshang and noted the preemptively brought gifts, understanding: “Director Lu’s family just went out; they’re probably visiting relatives.”

Knowing the day was a waste, Mao Yunshang pulled Kang Huaiqing along, her face clouded with displeasure: “Let’s get moving, or we’ll miss the bus back to the countryside.”
Kang Huaiqing, feeling a bit embarrassed, explained to Zhou Aiqing: “We wanted to visit Director Lu, but we’re late. We’ve got to go, need to catch the bus back to see my mom in the country.”
After they left, Kang Liyan scoffed: “Such shalessness, I bet they heard about Director Lu’s spouse giving back more than they receive and rushed over. Would she ever co to pay a New Year visit if it weren’t for that?”
