Luo Qiao ca out of the hospital, already past eleven at night.
As soon as she stepped out of the main entrance, she saw the car lights turn on, and Lu Yichen got out of the car: "Finished?"
Luo Qiao felt a wave of warmth: "It’s so cold, why didn’t you wait inside?"
Lu Yichen opened the passenger door for her: "If I waited inside, people kept coming over to talk to , so I ca out instead. I’m dressed warmly, not cold."
As he started the car, Lu Yichen took a small blanket from the back and placed it on Luo Qiao’s legs: "How’s the child?"
Luo Qiao pulled the blanket up a bit: "Cranial fracture, thankfully there was no damage to the brain tissue inside. It’s really a miracle the child survived—so young, how could anyone do that."
Thinking of sothing, Luo Qiao asked, "Why did you co over?"
They arrived at an intersection and the car stopped: "When I got ho, you still weren’t back. Rong Daniang said you hadn’t called ho, so I called your cell but no one answered, so I ca over."
Luo Qiao tapped her forehead: "Look at , how could I forget to call ho? Why didn’t you call my office? They would have answered."
Seeing the traffic signal change, Lu Yichen replied: "There wasn’t much to do at ho anyway, so I thought I’d co over myself to be at ease. Once here, I heard you were back in the operating room, and overheard so nurses talking about the child."
Luo Qiao looked over: "Will the old man be sentenced?"
Lu Yichen replied calmly: "That depends on whether the family pursues it."
Thinking of the child’s situation, Luo Qiao said: "If it were my child who suffered so much, I’d definitely send him to jail. No amount of pleading would help, and I’d go to any length, even divorce, to make sure he doesn’t get away with it."
Lu Yichen reached out to ruffle Luo Qiao’s hair: "Alright, I believe every mother loves their child. It just depends on what they choose."
Luo Qiao understood what Lu Yichen ant—if the old man went to jail, the Li family might pressure them to divorce. Even if Li Luping supported her, their future wouldn’t be easy.

Lu Yichen listened to his wife: "Rest assured, whoever takes on this case will handle it fairly and justly, because we, the police, wear the national emblem on our heads, keep a clear conscience, and carry the burden of justice. We won’t do anything that would dishonor our uniform."
Luo Qiao suddenly smiled: "I trust you."
When they got ho, Elder Rong and Rong Daniang ca out upon hearing them: "You’re back, co in quickly. It’s so cold; was the hospital busy today?"
Luo Qiao smiled: "Not too bad, just got an ergency case as I was about to get off work. In the rush, I forgot to have soone call you."
Rong Daniang laughed: "As long as you’re fine. You go inside first, I’ll make you so noodles so you can eat sothing warm. Yichen was so worried he didn’t even get to eat before going to the hospital, so you both can eat together."
Luo Qiao didn’t forget to ask: "Daniang, are the kids resting?"
Rong Daniang nodded: "They’re asleep. Made sure they washed up and went to bed on ti. They have exams tomorrow, so I just told them you’d be back late, and only then did the little ones go to bed obediently."
Luo Qiao smiled: "That’s good."
The couple went to the backyard together, put their things down, changed shoes, then went to check on the kids’ room. Seeing them sleeping soundly, they tucked in the blankets and turned off the night light before heading to the front yard.
Just then, Rong Daniang’s noodles were ready, and she called them over to sit: "Here’s so preserved sausage and braised at for you to go with it."
With the steaming hot noodle soup in front of her, Luo Qiao looked up at Rong Daniang: "Daniang, thank you and Elder Rong for all these years of hard work."
