They walked onto the stage in formation.

lisa led, trying to project confidence despite her ridiculous outfit. Margaret and listair flanked her, playing the role of noble nim representatives. Armia brought up the rear, hand on her sword, looking like she could demolish anyone who looked at them wrong.

The crowd’s reaction was mixed. Cheers from nim, curiosity from most kitsune, but lisa caught the suspicious looks too. The muttering.

"Citizens of Yalmir!" lisa’s voice carried with magical amplification. "We co in peace and friendship, to forge bonds that will last generations!"

She held up a scroll—hastily prepared backstage with lots of official-looking seals.

"Tonight, we sign—"

"LIES!"

A figure burst from the crowd. A kitsune woman, but her movents were all wrong. Too stiff. Too aggressive.

[Here we go.]

"The nim seek to conquer! To seduce and enslave as they did before!"

More figures erged from different points in the crowd. Eight in total. They moved toward the stage with purpose.

"They bring false treaties while planning domination!"

So in the crowd looked confused. Others started nodding, fear replacing celebration.

"Look at them! Displaying themselves! Using their bodies to weaken your resolve!"

[Well, that part’s kind of true, but still.]

lisa raised her hand, blue flas dancing on her palm.

"We’re not here to fight. But we will defend ourselves."

"See! She threatens us with forbidden magic!"

The lead Shadow Mage scowled. lisa inhaled slowly.

"Now!" the Shadow Mage scread.

All eight charged at once.

The first Shadow Mage reached the stage, hands weaving fire magic. lisa sidestepped, grabbed the woman’s wrist, and redirected the spell into the sky where it exploded harmlessly in a shower of sparks.

[Can’t kill them. That’ll make everything worse.]

"Ventus, spirare, defendere!"

Wind slamd into two more attackers, sending them tumbling backward but not seriously hurt. The crowd scrambled away from the fighting, so screaming, others frozen in shock.

Armia moved like water despite her size, her sword still sheathed. She caught one Shadow Mage with an elbow to the solar plexus, dropping her gasping but breathing. Another tried to flank her and got a tail to the face for the trouble.

"Protect the nim!" soone in the crowd shouted.

"No, stop them! They’re invading!"

[Shit, the crowd’s splitting.]

Silviana appeared in a blur of white silk and fury. Her nine tails spread wide, each one moving independently to block or deflect attacks. She didn’t throw a single offensive spell, just defended, contained, redirected.

A Shadow Mage lunged at Margaret. listair stepped in front of his wife and punched the kitsune right on the nose, eliciting a crack sound. The Shadow Mage hit the stage hard, dazed but alive.

"Stay down," he advised, foot on her back.

Another Shadow Mage tried a lightning spell. lisa caught it on a shield of fla, the energies crackling against each other. The feedback sent both of them skidding back.

[Too much force. Need to be gentler.]

"Radix, ligare, vinculum!"

Vines erupted from cracks in the stage, wrapping around three Shadow Mages’ legs. They thrashed and cursed but couldn’t break free.

"You’re making a mistake!" the lead Shadow Mage snarled, struggling against the vines. "The nim will destroy everything you’ve built! They’ll seduce your children, corrupt your—"

"Silentium vocalis!"

The silencing spell cut her off mid-rant. Her mouth kept moving but no sound erged.

Two Shadow Mages remained mobile. They looked at their trapped or downed companions, then at the guards closing in from all sides.

"Surrender," lisa offered. "No one has to die tonight."

One raised her hands. The other tried to run.

Raven appeared from nowhere—when had she gotten back?—clotheslining the runner with perfect timing. The Shadow Mage flipped completely over, landing flat on her back, wheezing.

"Adequate takedown," Raven noted, brushing off her hands.

In less than two minutes, it was over.

Eight Shadow Mages subdued, none dead, minimal property damage if you ignored the scorched stage and traumatized decorations.

The crowd stood in stunned silence.

lisa looked at the captured Shadow Mages, then at the mixed crowd of nim and kitsune. So faces showed fear, others confusion, many caught between loyalty to their race and what they’d just witnessed.

[This is the mont. Make it count.]

She walked to center stage, stepping carefully around a still-twitching Shadow Mage.

"These kitsune," she gestured to the captured attackers, "claim nim seek to conquer. To enslave. To seduce and destroy."

Murmurs rippled through the crowd.

"And you know what? Centuries ago, that was true."

Gasps. Even Silviana’s eyebrows rose.

"Our ancestors did terrible things. Used our bodies and pheromones as weapons. Turned desire into chains." She t the eyes of kitsune in the crowd. "Your ancestors broke free. Fought back. And in their anger, they did terrible things too."

She turned slowly, addressing every section of the plaza.

"But we are not our ancestors."

Her voice grew stronger.

"I stand here, a nim who learned magic not to conquer but to protect. Who fought Shadow Mages since childhood not for nim supremacy but for peace. Who ca to Yalmir not as an invader but as a friend."

She gestured to the captured Shadow Mages.

"They want us divided. Want us fearing each other. Because our unity terrifies them."

Margaret stepped forward, taking lisa’s hand. Then Silviana, on her other side. Armia, Raven, even Aria erged from backstage to stand with them.

"The nim of Yalmir will ALWAYS be allies to our kitsune sisters. Not because of treaties or politics but because this is our ho. You are our family. And family stands together."

Silence stretched. One heartbeat. Two.

Then a nim child in the front row started clapping. Her kitsune friend joined her. The applause spread like wildfire, nim and kitsune cheering together until the plaza shook with it.

The captured Shadow Mages looked around in disgust as their plan crumbled. The lead one’s silencing spell wore off.

"You fools! You’re courting disaster! The nim will—"

"Take them away," Silviana commanded.

Guards hauled the Shadow Mages off, their protests drowned in celebration.

Rakia bounded on stage, bells jingling.

"That was AMAZING! The drama! The tension! The way you caught that lightning bolt!" She grabbed lisa’s face. "You’re a STAR!"

Before lisa could respond, Rakia kissed her deeply, tongue and all. The crowd whooped.

When she pulled back, lisa was dazed.

"The festival continues!" Silviana announced. "Music! Dancing! And drinks are now half price!"

The crowd roared approval. Musicians struck up a celebratory tune. The crisis was over.

"Nice speech," Aria said quietly, appearing at lisa’s elbow. "Though technically you don’t have authority to speak for all nim in Yalmir."

"Sure, but-"

Before lisa could respond, Isabella appeared with Armia in tow.

"We’re getting drunk! Imdiately! That was too much excitent while sober!"

"Soone should stay alert," Raven pointed out.

"You’re right! You stay alert. We’ll get drunk!"

She started dragging Armia toward the wine vendors. Kimiko followed, already eyeing a server carrying a tray of sothing pink and probably lethal.

"Your friends are insane," Aria observed.

"Yeah." lisa grinned. "Aren’t they great?"

The festival exploded back to life around them. Dancers, acrobats, fire-breathers, all performing with renewed energy. Nim and kitsune mingled freely, the Shadow Mages’ attempt at division having the opposite effect.

"So," Silviana said, sidling up to lisa with a predatory smile. "My chambers. Later. The invitation stands."

She walked away before lisa could respond, hips moving in ways that caused several people to walk into poles.

"Did she just..." Aria started.

"Yeah."

"And you’re going to..."

"I an..."

They looked at each other, both faintly blushing.

"We should probably check on the others," Aria said carefully.

"Right. Make sure Isabella doesn’t die of alcohol poisoning."

"Or public indecency charges."

"That too."

They headed into the crowd together, the festival swirling around them in a chaos of color and sound and celebration.

[We actually did it. We stopped them without killing anyone.]

Her tail swayed with the music, and for the first ti all night, lisa let herself relax.

[Now to survive whatever Isabella’s about to do with that bottle of wine...]

The night was, after all, still far from over.
