Chapter 729: Chapter 728: Having a Baby
Yang Wanng’s mother-in-law couldn’t hold back and spoke to Nie Siming about the little daughter-in-law downstairs who had been too bold in talking back to her while waiting for him to co back for dinner.
As soon as Nie Siming heard this, he was bound to inquire, for in his eyes, Lin Xia had a good temperant and was not one to quarrel easily. So why did she have to clash with his own mother?
“Mom! What did you guys say?”
Yang Wanng was also very curious, not knowing what the issue between her mother-in-law and Lin Xia could be.
“Yeah, Mom! How did Lin Xia talk back to you?”
Yang Wanng’s mother-in-law gave an awkward laugh, secretly regretting her quick tongue!
If it were just between her and her son, so things she said wouldn’t matter.
But now, here was the daughter-in-law, staring eagerly!
She would certainly not be pleased if she knew what had been said!
After all, Yang Wanng had not yet given birth. What if there was a boy in her belly? Wouldn’t she beco angry upon hearing such things?
However, she could not keep this secret for long, even if she could hide it for a little while.
Once she finished her month of postnatal care and left, the two daughters-in-law downstairs would surely tell Yang Wanng.
But by then, she would be gone, and what could Wanng do if she was unwilling to accept it?
“Ah! Actually, it was nothing serious, just a casual chat and a clash of words! That little daughter-in-law really has a sharp tongue!”
Nie Siming understood his mother’s character; he could tell she had ntioned sothing that should not be brought up in front of Yang Wanng.
“Mom! Look at your age! You should be more careful with your words! We are living together, upstairs and downstairs; this relationship should not be strained!”
Now that everyone’s relationship had finally eased, he did not want his mother to cause any more conflict with Lu Zheng’s daughter-in-law.
“Yes! I got it! Don’t worry, son, I have a sense of propriety. I’ll be careful with my words when I see them in the future!”
Yang Wanng felt puzzled, but since her mother-in-law and son started discussing their old ho, she couldn’t chi in, so she didn’t bring it up again.
After the al, Yang Wanng helped clear the table, while her mother-in-law kept urging her to go back to the bedroom for a nap.
After washing the dishes, Yang Wanng’s mother-in-law, hearing no noise from the room, quietly gestured to Nie Siming, who was sitting on the living room sofa reading a book.
Nie Siming had already guessed that his mother wanted to speak to him alone, which was why he had not gone to the bedroom with Yang Wanng but stayed in the living room.
The mother and son went to another bedroom and quietly closed the door.
Nie Siming asked in a low voice, “Mom! What exactly happened?”
“Really, it wasn’t about anything serious! I just happened to et them downstairs and made small talk. I just casually ntioned that looking at your wife, she seems to be carrying a girl!
Fortunately, I already have a grandson. Otherwise, in the old days, this would spell the end of our family line!
Who knew that the little daughter-in-law would take offense? She spoke harshly, saying things like ‘daughters are good; am I not a woman myself?’ I, at my old age, being belittled by soone in their twenties like this, I…”
Nie Siming, helplessly holding his forehead, had no desire to listen further, “Mom! Please never ntion these things again! And don’t bring it up in front of Wanng! Nowadays, boys and girls are equal!”
He knew his mother’s old-fashioned thinking and her serious preference for boys over girls.
But tis had changed, and whether it was a daughter or a son, they would be both his and Yang Wanng’s children.
“You silly boy, how can boys and girls be the sa? Ah! I got it, did you guys find out it’s a girl from so check-up, and that’s why you’re saying this?”
Nie Siming said sharply, “Mom! Can you keep it down?”
Yang Wanng’s mother-in-law quickly covered her mouth, having montarily forgotten in her excitent that there was soone in the room next door!
At that mont, a sharp cry from Yang Wanng ca from outside the door, “Nie Siming, co out quickly! My stomach hurts!”
The mother and son looked at each other in panic and imdiately rushed to the door, opening it to see Yang Wanng standing not far outside, covering her belly with tears all over her face…
By the ti Lin Xia and Hao Xiaoyun received the news, Nie Siming had already brought the midwife from outside.
Yang Wanng’s cries of pain, one louder than the next, could be clearly heard by them downstairs.
But in such tis, outsiders like themselves could only care from a distance.
Worried that Lin Xia might overthink while alone at ho listening to those sounds, Hao Xiaoyun simply took Lin Xia to her own place.
The two of them sat together, anxiously awaiting news.
Seeing Lin Xia’s anxious expression, Hao Xiaoyun said soothingly, “Lin Xia, don’t be scared! Although all won must go through this when giving birth, it sounds agonizing, but once it’s over, there’s nothing to worry about!”
“Yeah! Sister-in-law, I’m not scared! It’s just… hearing her like that, it must be really painful!” Lin Xia couldn’t help but think about what it would be like when it was ti for her to give birth.
If it’s like this for soone having one child, what would it be like for her with twins?
Hao Xiaoyun laughed, “Silly girl! I tell you, when the ti cos, you’ll be too busy to think about the pain! You’ll be numb to it!
I just kept hoping that the faster I could get the child out, the quicker I’d be free of the pain!”
Curious, Lin Xia asked, “Sister-in-law, how long did your labor last?”
“My labor was slow! It took all night, and it wasn’t until past six in the morning that I finished giving birth!
My brother’s wife, on the other hand, had a quick labor. She said she felt pain and needed to give birth, and soon after the midwife arrived, the baby was born!”
“Then your brother’s wife is really lucky!” Lin Xia envied her sincerely, wishing her own labor would be just as swift.
“Isn’t she! All our relatives and friends back in our hotown envy her!”
After chatting for a bit, Lin Xia brought the subject back, “I wonder how long it will be before Yang Wanng gives birth!”
“Hard to say, but I guess it should be soon!” Hao Xiaoyun, trying to distract Lin Xia, intentionally brought up, “And we don’t know whether Yang Wanng will have a boy or a girl! Look at her mother-in-law, if it’s a boy, that would be cause for celebration for everyone!
If it’s a girl though, her confinent period might not go well, and she might end up with health issues!”
Hao Xiaoyun felt she wasn’t exaggerating; Wanng’s mother-in-law clearly wasn’t easy to deal with.
Being able to complain about her so casually to outsiders suggested that she must have harbored deep resentnt.
Lin Xia thought the sa as Hao Xiaoyun, “Yeah! If her mother ca over to help look after her, that would be better!”
At this mont, setting aside all previous prejudices, she genuinely felt sympathy for Yang Wanng.
Wanng continued in labor until after nine in the evening before the child was finally born.
Lu Zheng had long since returned ho, and after having dinner with Lin Xia, he skipped their usual walk, staying at ho attentive to any news.
When they heard movent in the hallway, they both got up quickly, with Lu Zheng rushing to the door and flinging it open.
The door of the old Li family’s apartnt across the hall was also open, and Nie Siming was sweating profusely, cheeks flushed with a red glow.
Old Li and Lu Zheng asked in unison,
“Has the baby been born?”
“Is your wife alright? What did she have?”
Nie Siming nodded vigorously, “Born! It’s a girl!”
Old Li clapped him on the shoulder with a chuckle, “You’re lucky, son! Girls are good! They say a daughter is like a little padded jacket!”
Nie Siming chuckled heartily, clearly overjoyed.
After exchanging a few jokes, Lu Zheng urged him, “You better hurry back to take care of your wife and child. We’ll co visit when we have ti!”
It was very late, and as Yang Wanng had just given birth, it wasn’t appropriate to visit her at ho.
“Alright! You guys should rest early too!” Nie Siming said with a smile as he headed upstairs.
