ng Guan was a police officer, and now, a punch from him wasn’t sothing that a frail, scholastic rchant like Bai Zhengyuan could withstand.
The sound of his fist, small as a clay pot, hitting flesh and the ensuing terrifying crack, made listeners shudder, accompanied by a pained groan.
Several younger family mbers were taken aback and, unable to stop him in ti, they could only watch helplessly as ng Guan lunged at Bai Zhengyuan, throwing punches that landed forcefully on his face.
The others finally reacted and hurriedly stepped forward to pull them apart.
But ng Guan was too strong, and they could only hear Bai Zhengyuan’s screams of agony, unable to separate the two of them.
"Enough."
The voice of ng Yue ca unexpectedly calm.
Only then did ng Guan gnash his teeth and snort coldly, staring at him before finally grabbing his collar and, with each word seeming to co from between clenched teeth, he demanded, "Where is my dear niece?"
Bai Zhengyuan had been beaten to the point where he couldn’t speak.
His face sared with blood, he now covered it with his hands, yet blood oozed unstoppably from between his fingers.
ng Yue’s heart clenched as if seized by an invisible hand, wanting to move forward to check, but reason stopped her from doing so.
She too wanted to know where her child had gone.
Alive or dead, boy or girl, if her child was still living, whether they were healthy or not, whether they had enough to eat and warm clothes to wear, how was their life now?
And yet, she was completely ignorant of these most basic, fundantal things.
She had poured all her love over the past twenty or so years into Bai Yuejie, for her, she didn’t wish to have more children, for her, she was willing to give up her rising career to imrse herself in charity.
Over the years, the number of children and families she helped were countless, yet her own family had long since been in shambles without her knowledge.
The more ng Yue thought, the more uncontrollable tears fell.
She stared at Bai Zhengyuan on the ground, waiting for his answer.
Seeing that Bai Zhengyuan’s cries didn’t cease, ng Guan lost his patience and shouted, "Speak up! You damn coward, own up to what you’ve done!"
Bai Zhengyuan moaned as his hands were pulled away, revealing a face caked with blood.
ng Yue, upon seeing that, felt a wrenching pain inside.
But in the next instant, she had already turned her head away.
Seeing his wife’s reaction, Bai Zhengyuan’s heart felt like it was sinking, and, in a fit of resignation, he said, "I told you, the child died back then! She has long been dead... Ah!"
ng Guan landed another punch.
The group of young n rushed to intervene, finally managing to separate the two.
ng Guan’s face was twisted with anger, but ng Yue stepped forward to grasp her brother’s arm, saying, "Let it go."
Her voice was laced with sobs, and with just a slight tilt of his head, ng Guan could see his sister’s eyes, swollen like walnuts.
ng Guan glared at Bai Zhengyuan on the floor with venomous hate, then decisively, he took ng Yue and walked away.
It was only after they left that the group of young people looked at each other in bewildernt.
One of them said, "That was too much, wasn’t it? How can you just hit soone like that..."
"Indeed, and the blows were so..."
As the words echoed, everyone looked back at Bai Zhengyuan, at his bruised and swollen face streaked with blood, it was indeed... too pitiful.
Bai Zhengyuan removed his broken glasses and spat out blood-stained saliva, managing to say with difficulty, "You all go back."
The young people were scared too, but how could they just leave now?
