Surprisingly, Adrienne received yet another gift from her uncle. She received a sedan for her eighteenth birthday. The three picked it up from the car dealer, and Reese pointed out its security features to Hunter Nian. As Adrienne’s bodyguard, Reese expected Hunter to use it frequently.
"Uncle, isn’t this too much?" Adrienne asked once they were done giving it a test drive. Her guard was still up as she sensed Hunter’s eyes set on her.
"Too much? Addie, this is nothing to . I didn’t have a chance to pamper and spoil you from the mont you were born. I’ve decided to make up for lost ti." Reese grinned happily while Hunter kept his gaze on Adrienne.
"It’s already under your na. You can ask Hunter to teach you how to drive if you want. It may co as a handy skill in the future." Reese continued, not knowing that Adrienne knew how to drive, but cannot do so because soone might find it suspicious. She never took formal classes on driving anyway, so Adrienne was forced to feign ignorance.
"Thanks, Uncle. It’s been a while since I last received a gift from soone." Adrienne replied, her tone a little depressing to Reese’s liking.
"Then you can expect more from in the future. Your grandpa has approved of it anyway. You are also free to visit them anyti you wish. I’m sure Mother would be thrilled to have you back."
Adrienne nodded, then rembered that Reese was scheduled to leave soon.
"Can I still give you a call during your mission? You’re coming back, right?"
Reese and Hunter stared at her for a mont. Both understood the underlying fear in her tone.
Reese patted her head before kissing her crown. "I’ll co back no matter what. You just stay put and wait for ."
Adrienne could only nod. After exchanging a few more words, Reese bid them goodbye and drove away, leaving her in Hunter Nian’s company. She waited for his car to disappear from her sight before going to the passenger seat of her new car. Hunter followed her shortly.
"You’ll be staying with at the Jiang Estate. My father’s second family also lives there, and they might try sothing to persuade you to betray ." Adrienne said while she set the GPS location of the estate on the virtual map before them.
Hunter securely fastened his seatbelt and looked at her. "Aren’t you worried I’ll betray you? They might offer a hefty amount of money to lure to their side."
Although Adrienne wasn’t certain of his real intention, she knew he wasn’t soone that could easily be bribed with monetary gain. Although Hunter led a frugal life, he didn’t appear crude or shrewd, unlike her. He was unlike Cayden, her half-brother, who liked to show off what he had.
"If you accept the offer, what makes you different from the Prosecutor Ji you hate the most?" She smiled faintly at him.
Hunter gave her an icy look but said nothing. The drive to the Jiang Estate was spent with silence. When they arrived, Lewis Jiang and his other children were in the backyard, busy having a barbeque party without Adrienne.
"Adrienne, you just ca ho? I know you are trying to catch up with your studies, but aren’t you coming ho too late? And who’s this young man you brought with you?" Elise took the chance to question her, intending to fuel their father’s displeasure toward Adrienne. If others heard these words, they would question Adrienne’s morality.
Camilla ca and joined them at that mont. She was holding another tray of uncooked at and chuckled low. Adrienne thought Elise had learned well from her mother. They knew how to twist words to make Adrienne look indecent and unfilial to her father.
"How could you say that, Elise? Your sister isn’t soone who’ll carelessly bring a man ho unless she shares a deep affection with him, enough to introduce her to her father." She comnted.
Camilla hadn’t spared Adrienne and Hunter a glance, but when she turned to give them a look, she looked horrified upon seeing Hunter Nian standing next to her stepdaughter.
Adrienne didn’t miss her stepmother’s reaction, and she curiously glanced at Hunter’s face, noticing a devious smile spreading on his lips. It was obvious to her that this man had so bad blood with Camilla Yan, but how co she never knew about it in her past life? Was this why Hunter Nian knew her?
Camilla acted as if she’d seen a ghost. Her knees quivered, and she almost lost her balance if it wasn’t for Elise, who had caught her in ti. Elise held her mother’s shoulders to keep her steady.
"Mom, are you alright? You look pale..."
"N-no, I’m alright..."
When Hunter looked at Camilla, Adrienne could sense the chilling and blood-thirsty aura emanating from him. She then noticed how her stepmother tried her best to repress her uneasiness. Witnessing such a rare scene, Adrienne couldn’t help but laugh.
"Elise, you shouldn’t poke too much into soone else’s business. This man isn’t who you think he is. This is Hunter Nian. My Uncle Reese recently employed him as my bodyguard after I complained to him about being harassed by so reporters a few months ago. He thought that since the Jiang family couldn’t provide proper security asures, he would take matters into his own hands."
By saying these, Adrienne not only painted her father as a cold-hearted father but also made a valid excuse to keep Hunter Nian by her side. However, seeing Camilla Yan’s reaction upon seeing her new bodyguard made Adrienne curious about what would compel her stepmother to react like this.
"Miss Addie, I’m surprised. You’ve just returned ho, and this is the welco you received. Such a heartfelt welco. It surely broadens my views on what the Jiang family actually looks like." Hunter’s lips curved slightly. His cold, detached eyes were looking at Camilla Yan with interest.
