Recap: The shadows shrieked. They writhed, clawed, tried to pry her away. But she clung tighter.

And then her breath ward. Just for a second. Her voice, tiny, trembled in my ear.

"...I’ll be back, Sensei."

The words cracked sothing deep inside . And then—

Her body dissolved. Not like a monster, not like ink. Like light breaking apart. Her warmth lingered for one heartbeat in our arms, and then she scattered into a thousand drifting motes, vanishing into the air like fireflies.

The alarm clock went off like it had a personal grudge.

I cracked an eye open, instantly regretted it. My body felt like it had been put through a blender, set on grind, then tossed back into bed. Saki’s hug still burned faintly on my skin, and Nakamura’s broken face wouldn’t leave my head.

But guess what? High school didn’t give a shit about rooftop exorcisms or MILF ltdowns. It wanted in uniform, on ti, smiling like a dumbass sixteen-year-old.

I stared at the ceiling.

"System, you awake?"

Her voice slid in smooth, honeyed, and way too amused.

> "Mmm, of course I’m awake, soldier-boy. You moaned in your sleep, by the way. Want to tell you which na you whispered?"

I sat up so fast I nearly headbutted the wall. "The hell is wrong with you?"

She laughed, low and throaty, like a cigarette after sex.

> "Wrong? Nothing. But oh, Renji... you look delicious when you’re tired. Go on, drag yourself to school. Let’s see how long you can pretend to be normal."

Yeah. Great pep talk. Thanks.

I threw on my uniform, splashed water on my face, and shoved toast in my mouth like so cliché ani kid. If anyone looked close enough, they’d see I was running on trauma and spite.

By the ti I hit the school gates, the morning sun was already too bright, the chatter too loud, and my patience nonexistent.

"Oi, Renji!"

The shout ca with a crumpled paper ball smacking dead in the forehead.

Kai.

He grinned like an idiot, ssy hair, shirt half-untucked. My so-called best friend, expert at making want to strangle him before horoom even started.

"You look like shit, bro," he said, laughing. "What happened, lose a fight with your pillow? Or..." He leaned in, smirking. "...get drained dry by so older woman, huh?"

I choked on my toast.

Before I could answer, Aki strolled up behind him. Taller, quieter, sharp-eyed in a way that made him dangerous. He looked over once, slow.

"You’ve definitely changed," Aki said flatly.

Kai barked a laugh. "Yeah, changed into a zombie."

But Aki didn’t laugh. He just kept staring like he could peel open if he wanted.

I forced a smirk, jamming my hands in my pockets. "Relax. I’m still . Just... had a long night."

Aki’s eyes narrowed a fraction.

The System purred in my head:

> "Careful, Renji... this one’s not as dumb as the other. He sees too much."

Great. Just what I needed.

---

Horoom buzzed with the usual morning chaos. Desks screeched, gossip flew, and soone in the back was already blasting a shitty J-pop ringtone like it was the national anthem.

Kai slumped into the seat beside mine and imdiately started flicking erasers at random people like he was on a sniper mission.

"Yo, Renji." Flick.

"What?"

"You spacing out again?" Flick.

"No."

"Liar." Flick.

The third eraser bounced off my cheek. I grabbed it midair and crushed it in my fist.

"Do you want to die this early in the morning?"

Kai just laughed. "There he is! The grumpy bastard I know."

Across the row, Aki leaned back in his chair, long legs stretched out, arms crossed. He wasn’t laughing. He was watching. Always watching.

"You really have been different lately," Aki said, voice calm but cutting. "Grades shot up. Eyes sharper. Like you’re not the sa guy we started the year with."

Kai snorted. "Bro, stop talking like a detective. He just grew so brain cells, finally."

I smirked, resting my chin in my hand. "What can I say? Puberty hit my IQ."

The class laughed, Kai included, but Aki didn’t. His gaze lingered on , heavy, thoughtful. Like he wanted to call bullshit but was holding it back.

The System’s voice humd in my skull, sultry and smug:

> "Mmm... he’s peeling at your mask already. I like him. Keep your secrets close, Renji... or let him in. Wouldn’t it be fun to corrupt a boy your age, too?"

I clenched my jaw, ignoring her.

"Oi, Renji," Kai said, leaning over. "You free after class? I heard about this new café with bomb parfaits. We should—"

The horoom door slid open with a sharp clang.

Our teacher walked in, clapping her hands. "Settle down, everyone. We have an announcent."

The room quieted, curious eyes turning to the front.

I had no idea yet, but this was the mont "normal" was about to get fucked sideways again.

---

Horoom was the sa circus as always.

Kai flicked another balled-up paper at my head. It bounced off, and he grinned like he’d just hit a three-pointer.

"Yo, Renji, you daydreaming again? Or just thinking about titties?"

The whole row snickered.

I didn’t even flinch. "Both. Yours."

Laughter doubled. Kai froze, face twisting. "The hell, man—don’t say it like that!"

I smirked and leaned back in my chair. Banter like this felt normal. Dangerous word, normal.

Aki, stretched out like he owned the desk behind mine, cracked one eye open. "You’re different lately, Sakamoto."

I shot him a look. Aki’s the kind of guy who hides his sharpness behind a slouch, but when he pays attention... it’s like he’s peeling your skin back.

"Different good, or different bad?" I asked.

He shrugged. "Haven’t decided."

Before I could fire back, her voice slid into my head.

> [Mmh, don’t be too an to your friends, Renji. I like you sharp, but not prickly. Unless it’s your cock—then, by all ans...]

I clenched my jaw, biting back a groan. The System really had no brakes anymore.

You ever think about shutting the hell up during class? I thought back.

> [Oh, but watching you squirm is sooo much fun. Besides, these girls around you? None of them compare to .]

My pen nearly snapped in my hand.

Kai leaned over, whispering, "Bro, why you look like you’re fighting demons?"

"You wouldn’t believe if I told you," I muttered.

The bell rang, cutting through the chatter. Chairs scraped, voices hushed. For a second, I almost let myself think: Maybe this is it. Normal life. Finally.

But in the pit of my stomach, I knew better.

The morning dragged, one subject into the next. Chalk dust. Yawns. Kai trying to copy my notes without even hiding it.

"Subtle as a brick, dude," I muttered, sliding my notebook just out of reach.

He grinned. "C’mon, bros share everything."

"Not my grades. Or my porn stash."

The row around us cracked up again, teacher glaring like she might throw the chalk.

Aki just watched. Always watching. Noticing too much.

By the ti lunch rolled around, the air was thick with boredom and fried food slls. Kai wolfed down bread like he hadn’t eaten in years.

"You ever think about what cos next, Renji?" Aki asked suddenly, eyes on like he already knew the answer.

"Next?" I played dumb.

He nodded. "You carry yourself like you’re... waiting for sothing. Not school. Not tests. Sothing else."

Kai laughed, mouth full. "Bro, he’s just horny. That’s what he’s waiting for."

"Not wrong," I said dryly, stabbing my chopsticks into my bento.

But Aki didn’t laugh. He leaned back, eyes narrowing, like he could see the ghosts I carried. Like he knew that "waiting" wasn’t the right word.

Surviving was.

> [Mmm, he’s not wrong though, you are horny. Constantly.] the System purred. [And lucky for you, Renji, I’ll never leave you unsatisfied...]

I nearly choked on rice.

"Dude, you good?" Kai slapped my back.

"Fine. Just... swallowed wrong," I coughed.

My eyes flicked to the window, to the bright sky outside. The city felt too calm. Too quiet. Like the world was catching its breath before the punchline.

And I had the sinking feeling the punchline was coming fast.

---

Kai = cody,

Aki = sharp suspicion,

Renji = holding his secret close,

---

The room clapped politely, Kai whispered sothing dumb, Aki just squinted.

?

I shot out of my chair so fast it scraped the floor. My voice cracked across the room:

"WHAT? THE? HELL!?"

Gasps, laughter, stares. But none of that mattered.

Because the girl who vanished in my arms just nights ago, the ghost who swore she’d "be back" was standing at the front of my classroom, alive, older, hotter.

And smiling straight at .

That’s when the System chid.

[Target #004 Identified: Saki Hoshino. Age 35. Status: Reawakened. Role: History teacher. Objective: Restore her shattered sense of belonging.]

My blood ran cold.

She wasn’t just back.

She was my next mission.
