It was my first penalty since getting this system and I wasn’t gonna take it.

The umbrella mont stayed with longer than I expected.

Her perfu clung to my jacket. The sound of her quiet laugh echoed through my head all night. I didn’t sleep. Just laid there, eyes open, watching the ceiling shift with moonlight.

"Don’t catch feelings, rookie," I muttered.

System: Statistically inevitable. You’re human. Probably.

At school, I caught Rika in the staff hallway, leaning against the window with a coffee in hand. Her blazer was off. Her shirt slightly unbuttoned. Tired, but less guarded.

Ti to pull off the quest.

"You look good today."

Her eyebrow raised. No smile.

"Try again."

I stepped closer, careful not to invade.

"You make tired look beautiful."

Her lips parted just slightly. Then she looked away, sipping her coffee.

"Smooth."

System: Quest Complete. Affection 4. mory Echo Boost Unlocked: "Her First Classroom."

But that boost ca with a flicker.

A flash.

Rika at 22, standing alone in an empty classroom, arranging textbooks with trembling hands. A ring on her finger. That sa tired smile—but newer, softer.

Then the flash ended.

And I felt it again: that ache. That sense she never really got to grow out of being soone’s second choice.

I hesitated.

She was walking ahead of now, through the courtyard. The day was cloudy. Wind tugged at her shirt.

"Rika—wait."

She turned, slow.

I took a risk.

Stepped forward and fixed her collar. Gently.

Not a grab. Not a move. Just a little, careful gesture.

She froze. Then blinked.

"You always this bold?"

"Only when it matters."

System: Quest Complete – Touchpoint. Trust Bump 3. mory Unlock in Progress.

We stood there, too long for normal.

"You scare ," she said quietly.

"Why?"

"Because you’re the kind of person I could accidentally trust."

Then she walked off.

Back in class, Aki shot a look.

"You bagging the hot teacher or just stalking her?"

"Neither. She’s stalking my thoughts."

"You’re weird as hell."

"Says the guy who brought cold pizza to horoom."

He flipped off and tossed a slice.

We laughed like nothing heavy was hanging between periods of trig and literature.

But the system had already lit the fuse.

After school, I found a ssage scribbled on a folded paper in my desk.

"You want to know the real ? et at the café near 5th and Haru, 6 PM."

No na. But I knew the handwriting.

Rika.

System: Hidden Quest Activated – "Unmask."

Objective: Get her to talk about her past without directly asking.

This one didn’t have a penalty.

Which ant the stakes were higher.

Sotis, the system didn’t warn you because it wanted you to feel it.

And I already knew... I was way past the point of feeling.

The café was quiet, dimly lit. Small booth by the window. Jazz in the background. Rika was already there, sipping red wine.

She didn’t say anything when I sat. Just nodded.

"I almost didn’t co."

"Sa."

"But you did."

"I always show up."

Her eyes flicked to . asured. Calm. But not guarded.

She poured a little wine into a second glass.

"One drink. One story. That’s the deal."

"Yours or mine?"

"Yours first."

I could’ve lied.

I didn’t.

"I was fifty when I died."

"Oh, we’re starting with insanity."

"Shot. Military mission gone bad. Next thing I know—I’m sixteen again. New na. Sa last na. Whole different world."

She stared at like she couldn’t decide whether to laugh or leave.

"And you expect to believe that?"

"No. But I promised to give you sothing real."

She sipped. Silent for a beat too long.

"Your eyes don’t belong to a teenager."

That was all she said.

Then she launched into hers.

"I was nineteen when I t him. Married by twenty-one. Divorced by twenty-eight. He cheated. Lied. Got another woman pregnant. I stayed quiet. For too long."

Her voice didn’t shake.

But her fingers did.

"He made feel worthless. Like everything I did was a waste unless it served him."

"He’s wrong."

"He made think I was only good for fucking, cleaning, and looking tired in pictures."

I didn’t flinch.

"You’re more than that."

"I don’t need saving."

"I don’t save people. I stand next to them until they rember who the fuck they are."

She blinked.

"You’ve got a mouth on you."

"I’ve got a mouth for a lot of things."

She laughed. Not loud. But real.

"Sa ti next week?"

"Only if we raise the stakes."

"What do you have in mind?"

"I’ll show you. Next ti."

On my way ho, the system pinged one last ssage:

WARNING – System Penalty Activated: Lust over Trust Flag Raised.

Result: Next quest will include double penalty if failed.

Guess I was getting too close, too fast.

And the system? It always knew when to slow down... or punish for not listening.

And well....I was kinda getting use to it.
