Ashley Shaw looked through the car’s front windshield and saw Chief Hayes speaking seriously with Leo.
Leo nodded gently from ti to ti.
She could tell that, compared to Warren Prescott, Chief Hayes’s tone towards Leo was more like a superior to a subordinate.
In front of Warren, however, he seed sowhat cautious.
In her past life, she never encountered these things. Now seeing it, she only felt that the Prescott Family seed more mysterious and more... powerful than she imagined.
Survival of the fittest.
Those four words suddenly ca to Ashley Shaw’s mind again.
A phone ringtone suddenly rang at this mont.
Ashley Shaw was startled.
She pulled out her phone, but found no notifications on the screen.
It was Warren Prescott’s.
Turning to look at the driver’s seat, she indeed saw Warren putting the phone to his ear.
"Mm, picked up the person, will arrive in half an hour..."
Ashley Shaw promptly opened the settings and changed "Sky City" back to the original ringtone.
Warren finished his call and turned to look at her: "Everyone’s here. Rember the plan from the group chat, don’t blow it."
He was referring to the plan to let Leo think that only the three of them would be at tonight’s welco dinner as everyone else pretended to be unavailable.
It wasn’t his idea; it was too boring. But since everyone else was looking forward to it, he went along with what they said.
Otherwise, he’d have to rack his brains to co up with an idea.
n dislike trouble, and he was no exception.
"I know, I won’t blow it. But with Leo’s intelligence, you definitely can’t deceive him."
Warren corrected her: "Not you, us. You’re part of it too."
"Right." Ashley Shaw coughed lightly and said, "Anyway, you can’t deceive him."
"You’re that sure?"
"Of course, back then, everyone went to test their intelligence out of curiosity, and Leo’s was the highest."
Warren sneered: "That’s because I wasn’t there."
"Were you not there?" She couldn’t rember.
Two lives later, how could she rember so much?
Warren gritted his teeth: "What do you think? You were the one who knew best why I wasn’t there, weren’t you?"
Ashley paused, just about to ask for details when mories of that ti suddenly surged in her mind.
Back then, she was still in middle school.
She had just gotten close to Warren and his group.
It was a Friday, and a "blonde kid" blocked her at the school gate, insisting she be his girlfriend.
She ran off in fright, straight to Warren’s classroom.
Warren was on duty that day, but he never did the cleaning himself. He always had his lackey—naly, Damian Ford—help with it.
When she ran into Warren’s classroom, Warren was complaining that Damian wasn’t cleaning up properly.
Seeing her rush in with a panicked face, he didn’t ask but imdiately saw the blonde kid chasing after her.
Warren instantly understood what was happening and raised his fist, starting a fight with the blonde kid.
Warren was good at fighting, but at the ti, he hadn’t grown much in height and his opponent was an adult who fought dirty and ruthlessly...
The end result was that Warren’s right leg got broken and the blonde kid had a punctured eardrum.
The IQ test happened while Warren was in the hospital.
So Warren did stand up for her and fought for her back then.
After all that ti, those mories scattered like beads with broken strings.
Now, thanks to so "cleanup," these dust-covered pearls in the corner were found again, gleaming with their original luster.
"You didn’t really forget, did you?" Warren gritted his teeth.
"No... I didn’t forget, your leg was broken."
"Left or right foot?"
"Uh..." Ashley really couldn’t recall.
Warren took a deep breath and smiled.
"Good, very good. Even Lucius wasn’t as clueless as you."
Ashley corrected him: "That saying’s ant for dogs, not Lucius."
Warren’s gaze swept over, as sharp as a blade’s edge.
Ashley involuntarily shivered and changed the topic: "Are you hiding sothing from and Leo?"
Warren instinctively reached for a cigarette, only to realize there was already one between his fingers.
It had just been handed to him.
Yellow Crane Tower, not his preferred brand.
He liked the brand Ashley chose for him.
After thinking, he tossed the cigarette onto the control panel and reached for his own.
Nothing.
He had forgotten to bring them.
Watching his flustered hands, Ashley sighed and spoke: "When soone’s guilty, they tend to look busy."
"Cough..." Warren choked on his saliva.
Ashley smirked, as if to say, "Caught you, didn’t I?"
Warren let out a chuckle from his nose, "I dare to say, but I fear you won’t dare to listen."
"Go ahead, there’s nothing I can’t hear."
"It’s the Veridia Intelligence Agency..."
Ashley suddenly covered her ears.
"Stop, I don’t want to hear anymore."
Warren raised an eyebrow, clearly saying, "I knew you wouldn’t dare listen."
In truth, even if Ashley dared to listen, he wouldn’t dare to say.
Even though he was a bit reckless, arrogant, and conceited, he knew right from wrong.
Besides, it wouldn’t benefit Ashley to know; it would only bring harm.
But seeing Ashley so restless, he organized his thoughts a bit and shared what he could.
"The higher-ups arranged for Leo to carry sothing. Leo doesn’t know what it is and thinks it’s related to astronomy."
"Those two people aren’t just there to protect Leo; they’re also to ensure Leo doesn’t peek at the docunt’s contents."
"There were actually many people watching us at the airport today, but they weren’t sure if Leo had the docunt because we were too ’indifferent.’"
That’s also why, after he ca out of the restroom and didn’t find Ashley, he nearly froze in fear.
When he had gone to the restroom, he purposely didn’t tell Ashley because he was sure she’d follow him.
But unexpectedly, she left first.
Luckily, everything went according to the original plan.
Ashley listened, her heart pounding with fear.
"So, haven’t we been in danger every mont on our way here?"
Warren casually replied, "After we got in the car, they stopped following us."
"When did they start watching us?"
"After Leo got off the plane until we got in the car."
Ashley’s back was drenched in cold sweat from the shock.
Looking at Warren, she realized how little she truly knew him.
She never knew Warren’s acting was so good or that he could hide his emotions so well.
She always thought he was soone who couldn’t hide his feelings, who showed them openly.
Just like in their past life, when he didn’t like her, and so for three years of marriage, he barely showed her a good face.
But if he was such a good actor, as long as he pretended not to dislike her so much, those three years would have made her so happy, so happy...
Unconsciously, she started thinking about her past life again, but forced herself to stop.
It was all in a past life; there’s no point dwelling on it.
But suddenly, Ashley realized sothing, and her heart sank to the bottom.
