Eric tightened his grip on her hand, still staring at Jas with a blank expression.
Jas trembled as he accepted the docunt, signing his na on the risk disclosure form.
After all, given the circumstances, surgery was the best choice. If there were a way to cure him without it, the doctor wouldn’t recomnd it.
Eric ordered lunch. Ella was already exhausted, and if she didn’t eat sothing, she’d likely suffer from low blood sugar.
And so began another agonizing wait.
When the ergency room doors finally opened, a nurse wheeled out Henry, still unconscious.
"Doctor, how is my son?" Ella asked anxiously.
"I’m sorry, we’ve done all we can... The cerebral hemorrhage has caused significant damage, and now he’s in a vegetative state. If he doesn’t wake up within three weeks... he might remain this way forever."
Ella felt a loud buzzing in her head.
Eric patted her shoulder silently.
Lauren, tears streaming down her face, followed the hospital bed as it moved, murmuring, "Henry, you’re such a good person—you have to wake up!"
Ella’s face was grave. She already felt indebted to Henry, but now he was in a coma, with the possibility of becoming a vegetable!
Damn it!
"Henry... I’ll make sure soone takes care of him; don’t worry," Jas said, turning to look at Ella, whose face had gone pale.
He’d learned the general situation as soon as he arrived—it was, after all, an accident, and Ella wasn’t to bla.
Eric looked at Jas with a cold expression. "He might not be my own brother, but I still worry about him. He was hurt because of my wife. I’m not like you, soone who’d drive their own wife to the brink. Don’t pretend to care. If needed, I’ll be here, doing all I can."
Whenever the two were together, it inevitably sparked an angry confrontation.
Jas’s expression darkened. "Eric, could you stop being so extre?"
"Let’s go. Soone’s here to take care of him. He’ll wake up after three weeks, and we’ll co back to see him tonight."
Ignoring Jas, Eric turned to Ella, who was looking dazed, his gaze darkening slightly.
Seeing her like this hurt him.
She was worried about another man, but what could he say? It was natural for Ella to feel this way. Only soone heartless and cold would look on without a care.
Ella silently followed Eric away.
By the third day, Henry still showed no signs of waking. Standing beside his bed, Ella’s brows were knitted tightly.
Henry lay there, his eyes closed, a feeding tube inserted in his mouth—none of his forr vitality remaining.
Lauren, her voice choked with sobs, looked pleadingly at Ella. "Ella, when will he wake up? It’s been days, and... he hasn’t improved! How... how could this happen to soone so good?"
Ella silently patted her shoulder. "He’ll wake up. He has to."
Lauren forced a bitter smile, knowing it was just ant to comfort her.
Eric, anwhile, sat out on the balcony of the hospital room, keeping Ella company for as long as she stayed.
In truth, Eric felt a bit anxious. If Henry stayed in this condition, would Ella... stay by his side to take care of him?
The thought alone filled him with a strange irritation.
He’d been throwing himself into work these days, only appearing when Ella ca to visit Henry.
Yet part of him felt he needed to have enough trust in Ella; after all, they had weathered so many storms together.
Whether or not Henry regained consciousness shouldn’t affect their relationship.
Just then, the sound of high heels echoed outside the hospital room.
A knock ca at the door. As it opened, Ella’s expression hardened as she recognized the visitor.
Lauren glanced at Leah, unfamiliar with her and feeling no particular animosity—at least not yet.
Leah entered, clad in a sleek black business suit, carrying a fruit basket. She walked gracefully, casting a casual glance at Henry lying on the bed.
"I heard... Henry was hurt, so I thought I’d stop by," Leah said calmly, placing the fruit basket on the table.
Ella’s lips curled in a sardonic smile. Leah—did she really think Ella was unaware of her sches?
Leah’s face was composed as she looked at Ella, but beneath her mask, resentnt and disappointnt churned. She had been so sure that her plan to use the male teacher would trap Ella in serious trouble. She had even arranged for minor incidents with the bodyguards’ families to keep them away.
But sohow, that little pest Ella had managed to evade danger once again! Last ti, Rachel hadn’t hard her; this ti, the male teacher had also failed. This woman was infuriatingly lucky.
"Is Henry going to be okay?" Leah feigned a concerned look as she glanced at Henry.
Lauren’s face darkened slightly. Was Leah pretending to be concerned? Ella’s cold gaze fixed on Leah, scrutinizing every shift in her expression.
"Leah, are you blind? Can’t you see he’s lying there completely still?" Ella said with a sarcastic smile. "Henry ended up like this—are you satisfied?"
Leah flinched, eting Ella’s angry eyes. "What... what are you talking about? Ella, even with everything that happened to Carter Group, I don’t hold it against you. How could you accuse like that?"
What a hypocrite! Even now, she still wanted to act innocent?
"Leah, drop the act. Do you take for a child, blind and clueless to your little sches?" Ella’s gaze was sharp, her eyes glinting with disgust and hostility.
Lauren looked at Ella in surprise, unable to grasp the aning behind her words.
Leah’s heart skipped a beat. Had this woman figured sothing out?
Impossible!
She had kept things well-hidden. That girl had promised to disappear from the city after this was done. With no trace left behind, even Eric wouldn’t be able to track her down.
Leah forced an awkward smile, trying to look aggrieved. "Ella, are you misunderstanding sothing? I know you dislike people from Carter Group, but... you can’t just berate without reason!"
Ella stood up slowly, taking asured steps toward Leah.
Startled, Leah took a step back, retreating until her back hit the wall, leaving her with nowhere to go.
Ella sneered. "Leah, why don’t you talk about how you bribed a girl to seduce the male teacher, only to have her dump him, claiming I told her to leave him? You’re truly shaless, stooping to such childish tricks."
