Chapter 113: The Enemy In The Shadow

Chapter 113: The Enemy in the Shadows

Gabriel arrived within minutes, the screech of tires outside confirming his presence before Diane even reached the door.

By the ti she unbolted the locks, he was already there, pushing past her into the house, eyes scanning every corner like he was searching for ghosts.

His body was tense, coiled like a predator ready to strike.

"Where?" he demanded.

Diane shut the door behind him. "Upstairs. He—" She hesitated, her throat tightening. "He was waiting for ."

Gabriel’s jaw clenched, his fists curling at his sides. "He was in your house."

Diane’s voice was trembling and stuttering at the sa ti. "Y-yes..."

Gabriel turned, his green eyes burning like a wildfire.

"He shouldn’t be out. I don’t care how powerful his connections are—he was locked away. Soone helped him."

Diane nodded, already knowing where this was going. "Then we need to find out who?"

A knock at the door made them both snap their heads toward the entrance.

Gabriel imdiately reached for his gun, stepping in front of Diane. "Stay behind ."

Diane rolled her eyes. "I have a gun, too."

Gabriel ignored her, cautiously opening the door.

Riot stood on the other side, chewing gum like this was just another casual night out. "Relax, lover boy. It’s just ."

Gabriel sighed heavily, lowering his weapon. "You could have called."

Riot grinned, stepping inside. "Where’s the fun in that?" Then his smile faded as he glanced at Diane. "You okay?"

Diane hesitated before nodding. "Not really, but I’ll manage."

Riot exhaled, running a hand through his hair. "Yeah. I heard."

Gabriel folded his arms. "And?"

Riot smirked.

"And I might have an old friend who works inside the system. Soone who might be able to tell us exactly how Adrian walked free."

Diane’s eyes narrowed. "Define ’old friend.’"

Riot shrugged. "Soone who owes

a favor."

Gabriel gave him a flat look. "That doesn’t narrow it down."

Riot grinned. "Exactly."

Diane sighed. "And you trust this person?"

Riot’s expression darkened slightly. "I trust that they hate Adrian more than they like following rules."

Gabriel exhaled. "Then let’s make use of them."

An Hour Later – Warehouse District

Riot’s contact had chosen an abandoned building on the outskirts of the city as their eting point.

Gabriel didn’t like it.

Too open. Too many ways for things to go wrong.

Diane didn’t like it either, but they were out of options.

Inside, the air slled of old dust and rusting tal. A single overhead light flickered above them as they stepped inside, their footsteps echoing against the concrete.

Then—

Soone ca out from the shadows.

A woman.

Mid-thirties, dark hair pulled into a low ponytail, sharp eyes that missed nothing.

She smirked. "You’re late."

Riot rolled his eyes. "Good to see you too, Kate."

Kate crossed her arms. "You brought company."

Gabriel stepped forward. "We’re here for information."

Kate raised a brow.

"Oh, I know. Riot doesn’t call unless it’s life or death." She tilted her head. "So, what is it this ti?"

Diane exhaled. "Adrian Ravenhood."

Kate’s smirk vanished.

Her expression turned cold. "What about him?"

Gabriel’s voice was sharp. "He’s out. He shouldn’t be, but he is."

Kate’s lips pressed into a thin line. "I know."

Silence.

Then—

Diane narrowed her eyes. "You knew he was out?"

Kate exhaled. "I didn’t know for sure, but I had my suspicions."

Gabriel stepped closer, his shoulders looked a bit intimidating. "Then tell us what you do know."

Kate glanced at Riot before sighing. "Word inside the system is that soone with serious power got involved. Adrian was being held, but then, out of nowhere, things started getting... ssy."

Diane frowned. "ssy how?"

Kate’s gaze flickered to her. "Paperwork disappearing. Evidence shifting. Calls being made at odd hours. You know—ssy."

Gabriel’s expression darkened. "Soone was pulling strings."

Kate nodded. "And not just anyone. Soone with money."

Diane’s stomach twisted.

Rachel was dead. Richard was in Gabriel’s care. So who the hell was funding Adrian now?

"Do you have a na?" Gabriel pressed.

Kate hesitated. "Not yet. But I can find out."

Riot smirked. "That’s why we love you."

Kate rolled her eyes. "Don’t get sappy on , Riot." Then she turned back to Gabriel and Diane. "I’ll dig. But if I do this, I need sothing in return."

Gabriel’s eyes narrowed. "What?"

"When this is over, I want Adrian gone."

Diane t her eyes gently. "You don’t have to worry about that."

Kate studied her for a mont, then nodded. "Good."

She turned to leave but paused. "You should know—this isn’t just about Adrian anymore. Whoever got him out? They’re playing a bigger ga."

Diane exhaled slowly. "We figured."

Kate gave them one last look before disappearing into the shadows.

Silence filled the space.

Then Riot let out a low whistle. "Well. That was fun."

Gabriel rubbed his temples. "This just got more complicated."

Diane folded her arms. "Then we adapt."

Gabriel glanced at her. "You sound confident."

Diane smirked. "I have to be."

Later That Night – Back Ho

Gabriel poured himself a drink, his mind still turning over everything Kate had said.

Diane sat across from him, watching him carefully.

"You’re thinking too hard," she murmured.

Gabriel exhaled. "Soone powerful is backing Adrian." He looked at her. "That ans this isn’t just revenge. This is calculated."

Diane leaned back. "So we find out who’s behind it."

Gabriel took a slow sip of his drink. "And then what?"

Diane’s eyes darkened. "We take them out."

Gabriel smirked. "I like the way you think."

Diane sighed, rubbing her temples. "But I hate waiting."

Gabriel chuckled. "You always do."

She rolled her eyes. "I just want this to end, Gabriel. I want him gone. I want whoever is pulling his strings gone."

Gabriel reached across the table, his fingers brushing against hers. "We’ll get there."

Diane exhaled, squeezing his hand briefly before pulling back.

"I hope so," she murmured.

Gabriel’s smirk returned, but there was sothing dangerous in his eyes. "Trust . We will."

And deep down, Diane knew he was right.

One way or another—this was going to end.
