Chapter 450: Chapter 452: Locked Up
Yan Ze tily intervened, “He is acting on The Emperor’s command to investigate Shao Mingyang’s case. Don’t act recklessly.”
Pei Huaian’s eyes remained full of rage, though his tone cooled sowhat.
“This Prince has not killed anyone.”
Zhao Yuanjiang sneered, “Does the Fifth Prince really dare to do such a thing without owning up to it? Then please co with .”
“Master Zhao, I am unrelated to the death of Shao Mingyang,” Pei Huaian said gravely.
Zhao Yuanjiang’s face took on a mocking look, “Whether you’re involved or not, surely the Fifth Prince knows best.”
Seeing this, Yan Ze pulled Pei Huaian aside and whispered, “The case of Shao Mingyang obviously has sothing odd about it. I suspect it’s a trap, set specifically for you.”
Upon hearing this, a cold light flashed in Pei Huaian’s eyes. The idea was not impossible.
Otherwise, how could it be that, overnight, Capital City was awash with so many rumors? Clearly, everything was aid at him.
“Fine, I’ll accompany you.”
Pei Huaian handed the child to Ah Mo and instructed him to protect the child and Shao He at all costs, ensuring they didn’t co to even the slightest harm.
Ah Mo was deeply concerned for his safety, “My lord, you…”
“This Prince behaves with integrity; there will be no issues.”
Zhao Yuanjiang gestured invitingly, this ti, the Fifth Prince had fallen into his hands. Even if the Fifth Prince truly did not kill Shao Mingyang, he would make it look true.
In the prison, Zhao Yuanjiang locked the cell door and looked at the man inside with mockery, “The Fifth Prince probably never expected to be locked up here, did he?”
Pei Huaian sat calmly on a chair, gazing straight ahead, as if Zhao Yuanjiang’s mockeries fell on deaf ears.
Seeing the man before him remain composed, Zhao Yuanjiang felt a hint of irritation, “Fifth Prince, I advise you to be sensible and confess early. It could save you a lot of pain.”
Pei Huaian raised an eyebrow, “Oh? Is that so? Are you planning to force a confession?”
“Isn’t that the Fifth Prince’s usual tactic? Those tortures were all thought up by you. I bet you never thought they’d be used on you one day,” Zhao Yuanjiang replied sarcastically.
Pei Huaian slightly curved his lips, “I am quite looking forward to seeing what kinds of torture you will use, Master Zhao, to compel this Prince to confess!”
“Then let’s wait and see,” Zhao Yuanjiang said as he left the cell, laughing heartily.
When Shao He learned of this news, her expression was extrely calm, “What kind of person is the Vice Minister of Justice?”
“He’s a man of the Second Prince,” Ah Mo said, worried.
It was beyond comprehension why The Emperor would appoint him to investigate the master; it was akin to throwing the master into a pit of fire.
Shao He’s eyes narrowed slightly, sensing that things weren’t so simple. The Emperor had always favored Pei Huaian; how could he knowingly choose soone aligned with the Second Prince to investigate Pei Huaian?
“Doctor Shao, what should we do now?”
“Could you take to sneak into the Shao Residence? I want to check the cause of Shao Mingyang’s death to see if he left any clues to the murderer.”
Ah Mo nodded, “Alright.”
On a night when the moon hid behind clouds and the wind rustled the leaves, Ah Mo led Shao He to the Shao Residence. They groped their way to the mourning hall, which was unguarded.
Ah Mo pried open a window, and they climbed into the room through it. They pushed open the coffin lid to examine the deceased Shao Mingyang.
“The fatal injury was the stab to the chest.”
As Shao He examined his fingernails, she suddenly detected a faint fragrance. The scent seed familiar, as if she had encountered it before.
Moreover, there seed to be so threads in Shao Mingyang’s nails. Shao He was about to extract them when a noise suddenly ca from outside.
Ah Mo hurriedly pulled her behind so drapes. Another figure then entered the room through the window.
Shao He slowed her breathing as much as possible, while the newcor seed to sense sothing and stopped in front of the coffin.
All of a sudden, he lunged toward the spot behind the drapes where the two were hiding. Ah Mo quickly maneuvered Shao He out of the way.
That’s when the moonlight stread through the window into the room, allowing the three of them to see each other clearly.
“How is it you?” The three exclaid in unison.
Shao He looked at Pei Hanze with surprise, “What are you doing here?”
“And what are you doing here?” Pei Hanze asked in return.
“We are naturally here to find evidence to clear Huaian’s na,” Shao He explained.
Pei Hanze scoffed, “Do you think they will believe what you say?”
This matter was clearly a design against Pei Huaian; the adversary would not let him off easily.
“What brings Your Highness here in the dead of night, if not to destroy evidence?” Shao He’s eyes bore into him.
Pei Hanze’s smile faded as an icy aura began to emanate from him.
“You suspect ?”
“No, I never suspect Your Highness,” Shao He said promptly, without a hint of hesitation or doubt.
Pei Hanze had no reason to do such a thing; if he wished to harm Pei Huaian, he had many opportunities but never acted.
The hostility in Pei Hanze’s deanor faded, and his expression softened.
“At least you have so conscience.”
“I ca to investigate, for his death is sowhat related to .”
Although he had not killed the man directly, he had indirectly led to the murder, and it was incumbent upon him to find the true culprit.
