Chapter 138: Faris’s Dilemma

Faris’s mind seed to have been filled with nothing but the scent of that fox’s scent as soon as he laid his eyes on her.

Without thinking he had shifted and sprinted after her. He knew deep in his bones that she was his mate.

There was no mistaking the scent which had ignited this fire inside of him like a volatile liquid finding a spark.

But who was she?

Where had she co from?

He sprinted as fast as he could with his bushy tail waving behind him in excitent. She was fast as she zigzagged her way, leading him towards the training arena.

He could hear her frantically beating heart, the blood pumping in her veins, her fur coat shining as if it had been studded with small diamonds. But she wouldn’t stop running, her paws so agile and elegant against the ground.

He tried to pounce on her, to pin her on the ground but she swiveled left just in ti and kept moving.

’Uggh! Will she stop?’ Faris let out an agitated yelp. But the chase continued.

She then suddenly halted as a low dragon’s roar was heard in the distance. The magic pulsed all around her and she knew it was ti.

Faris was too drunk on the newly forming mate bond, all his attention was on his mate. He had even shut out the mind link from the fear of getting distracted and losing sight of his mate.

To Faris’s horror, a small fiery portal opened right ahead of the black and blue fox. The light coming from its halo bathed her in it and her fur seed to glow.

Faris was left stunned; he hadn’t seen such a beautiful fox before and that, too, who had turned out to be his mate.

She turned and cast what seed like an apologetic glance towards a flabbergasted Faris and jumped through the fiery portal.

Before Faris could follow, it abruptly closed, leaving him grappling the air.

’What? No, no. Where did she go?’ He agitatedly jumped left and right, trying to see if that portal would open again if he could just follow her sohow.

She had wounded his fragile heart without even eting him.

What was she afraid of?

What kind of power was that, to be able to open portals?

Was it even her power or borrowed from so mage?

So many questions lingered in Faris’s mind as he threw his head back in the air and let out a sorrowful howl.

He had lost her without even having the chance to connect with her. The world seed colourless to him, his wolf painfully howled at the back of his mind, clawing to get out.

Slowly he slumped to the ground, whimpering in pain. The closed mind link was buzzing again and again, he knew it could be urgent, so he reconnected and found it to be Siroos.

A sense of slight happiness filled his heart, hearing his brother’s voice filling his head. But sothing seed odd as he asked him to return to the dwelling.

Faris picked himself up off the ground and began to head back, trotting. His mind was still filled with the images of that mysterious black and blue fox.

Had he dreamt of her?

Now that she had disappeared along with that delectable scent, he wondered if he had imagined her.

Then his thoughts went back to Ara and he knew how devastated she would be to learn the truth. He had completely forgotten her as soon as the scent of his mate had hit his nostrils.

He really was a hypocrite. Finding your mate was truly a feat which couldn’t be described in words. Ranon had often told him that he would only understand it the day his mate’s scent would perate through his senses.

Today he understood the true aning of his words.

Ranon’s voice ca through the mind link in that instant.

’Faris! Where are you? Return to the dwelling.’ The seriousness with which he had spoken, made all the hair on his fur coat rise.

’What’s wrong?’ He asked desperately. He could now sense the warriors frantically shifting and patrolling. A few were in the air, doing aerial surveillance. He had no clue what was going on.

Nearing the dwelling, Faris shifted into his human self and rushed inside. He needed answers, sothing had gone awfully wrong. He then tried to mind-link Ara because Ranon was not answering him.

But to his surprise, he found nothing on her end. Just dead silence. This was strange, considering her mind link was never off. He would always connect.

As he neared the common area, Faris could hear murmurs and soft cries.

He stumbled inside and was horrified to see that most of the pack had gathered there and there was a body laid on the raised floor they used to place the bodies of their loved ones who passed away, before their burial. It was done so the whole pack could say their goodbyes and see the face one last ti.

Wrapped in a white sheet, soone lay on that raised platform. Ara’s mother kneeled beside the body and wailed loudly.

’Who could it be? It couldn’t be Ara, right? He just saw her a few monts ago. It had to be soone from her family.’

"What happened? Where is Ara?" He asked in a shaky voice, unable to tear his eyes away from the person wrapped in that shroud.

Heads turned, and sympathetic looks were thrown his way as Haylia rushed over to her son and dazedly hugged him.

"Are you alright?" She inquired, her desperate hands searching for any wounds.

"I am, who is that?" He questioned again, and this ti, it was Ranon who grabbed him by the shoulders and nudged him forward.

"Faris! You need to be strong for this." The pain in Ranon’s voice stung Faris and he turned to watch his best friend with questioning eyes. His forehead filled with ridges of worry.

Ara’s mother slowly peeled away the sheet from her face so Faris could see the face of her daughter, her dead daughter now.

"My Ara is gone," she lanted as a fresh trail of tears made their way out of her eyes and Faris seed to have been struck by lightning and impaled in his spot.

There was a ringing sound in his ears as he dropped like a log to his knees and stared with teary eyes at a peaceful-looking Ara.

And then he let out a most pitiful yowl of his misery.
