Chapter 38: Exhausted

Her tone carried a hint of pleading, which surprised Alex even more and he felt like laughing but he controlled himself and raised his eyebrows. He put his hand on her shoulder and patted it twice to comfort her, then said, "Not busy anymore, let’s go back to the room and sleep."

Upon hearing his words, She imdiately breathed a sigh of relief and took the initiative to hold Alex’s arm and walk towards the bedroom. They t the butler who was coming with a flashlight on the way.

"Master, the electrician for the circuit maintenance has already." The butler stopped midway upon seeing Alex’s gloomy and displeased expression. He noticed his madam timidly holding his arm and imdiately reacted, changing hiswords,

"The electrician for the circuit maintenance called and said that the rain is too heavy tonight, so he won’t be able to co over. If possible, he will co to fix it tomorrow morning."

"If that’s the case, he can co tomorrow morning." The butler looked at Alex for confirmation.

Upon hearing this, Claire felt uneasy and subconsciously tightened her grip on Alex’s arm. As expected..

Alex ordered in a deep voice, "Okay, there’s no need to co tonight."

"Yes, Master:" The butler nodded respectfully. As the butler hurriedly left with the flashlight, he sensed Alex’s approving gaze and couldn’t help but break out in a cold sweat. Fortunately, he reacted quickly and didn’t ruin the Master’s plan!

Alex glanced at the living room and walked straight to the bedroom. After entering the bedroom, he took off his clothes and lifted the covers to lie down on the bed.

Claire hesitated for a mont before slowly crawling into the bed as well. Her petite and exquisite figure didn’t appear cramped when lying next to Alex. Noticing her movents, Alex turned to look at her.

Claire was staring at him with her black and white eyes, looking uneasy and anxious.

His heart softened slightly. He turned to face her and asked softly, "did you have a nightmare?" Claire shook her head and didn’t speak. Suddenly, another thunderclap sounded. She was so frightened that she instinctively moved closer to Alex’s embrace.

Feeling the warmth and softness in his arms, Alex’s breath beca hot. "Don’t worry," Alex gently patted her back and comforted her. He was not a devout believer, but he was willing to indulge Claire Perhaps

it was because he had never been with any other won that he had a feeling of pity and tenderness towards her.

Claire’s tense nerves eased a bit. Seeing that Alex didn’t push her away, She beca bolder and leaned her head on his chest. Alex was stunned for a nt, then smiled and reached out to stroke her hair.

"Go to sleep," he said.

As if his voice was magical, as if it carried a charm that made her inexplicably at ease.

She obediently nodded and closed her eyes to sleep peacefully. Alex looked down at her peaceful sleeping face and a smile appeared on his lips.

The next morning, Claire woke up in a daze and sat up. Last night, Alex had held her in

his arms all night, and when she woke up in the morning, she felt extrely lazy.

As soon as she sat up, she bumped into a warm chest. The familiar scent hit her nose, and she imdiately beca alert. She looked up and t Alex’s smiling gaze.

"Good morning, wife," his deep voice sounded in her ear, sexy and alluring.

Claire’s face turned slightly red, and she couldn’t help but cover her ears with her hands. Alex chuckled at her reaction. He pinched her palm, then got out of bed and went to the bathroom to freshen up.

By the ti Claire changed her clothes and was ready to leave, Alex was already dressed and standing in front of the full-length mirror, buttoning up his shirt with elegance and grace. Seeing Claire staring at him absentmindedly, he smirked and asked,

"You’ll be busy for the next few days, right?Focus on your work, and l’ll co pick you up at night," he said, leaning in to kiss the corner of her lips.

Claire’s heart raced, and she looked at him with confusion. How could he be so different after their big fight?

"Alex, are you okay ?" she asked.

Alex’s body stiffened and his eyes darkened with a hint of displeasure. But soon, he suppressed this emotion and chuckled, saying, "What nonsense? What could be wrong with ?"

Claire blinked her eyes, feeling that he was different from before. But upon closer inspection, there was no difference at all. After staring at him for a while, She took a deep breath and suppressed her unease, thinking that she was overthinking things.

She lowered her head and said softly, "It’s good that there’s nothing wrong. I’m going to work now." After saying this, she left the bedroom on her own.

Alex looked at her back with a complex gaze and only moved his feet after a while, walking out of the room. Until Claire left, the two of them did not say another word, as if the warmth of last night was just a dream.

She hailed a taxi and headed to the clinic. Sitting in the car, she still thought about Alex’s changes. But no matter how much she thought about it, she couldn’t find any flaws. Helpless, she shook her head and focused on the upcoming consultations.

For the next three days, Claire was busy in the clinic, not lifting her hqead once. Every night, Alex would appear outside the clinic to pick her up from work.

But the two of them remained silent, and the atmosphere was awkward. After sending her ho, Alex would return to his study and not coback to the room even after Claire had fallen asleep. Although Claire felt uncomfortable, she was too tired to do anything and fell asleep heavily every night.

On the third evening, She sat exhausted in her office chair, relieved to have finished seeing her last patient. She rubbed her sore shoulders and prepared to pack up and leave.

Knock, knock, knock.

"Director Smith, do you have a mont?" ca the polite voice of Louis from outside the office door. Claire’s eyes lit up and she quickly got up to welco him in, saying, "Of course, Louis, please Co in."
