Chapter 17: Legacy

"If there's anything we need to talk about, let's discuss it peacefully. There's no need to resort to violence."

Even just standing there casually, Alex's presence was not diminished in the slightest. It was said that the young master of the Miller family was ruthless and dangerous, but that was only hearsay. He had never been seen in person.

When she saw him today, Mariah inexplicably felt afraid. Seeing Mariah's fear, Alex instinctively restrained the hostility in his deanor. After all, this was Claire's family mber, and he didn't want to ruin their relationship. "I ca to accompany Claire back ho. This is a little gift," Alex said, stiffly, with an awkward expression. Then, he took out the gift they had prepared earlier that morning and handed it to Mariah. Mariah was stunned and couldn't help feeling shocked.

Alex's gesture clearly gave Claire enough respect. Could it be that this country bumpkin had caught the eye of the Miller family's young master? Mariah regained her senses and quickly accepted the gift, saying respectfully, "Mr. Miller is very thoughtful. Please have a seat first; I will go call my husband down."

Not long after, Sebastian hurried downstairs and welcod Alex into the living room. Claire looked for Mariah, intending to take her mother's belongings back, and got up to leave, heading upstairs.

At that mont, Mariah was sitting on the bed in the bedroom, her eyes darting around as she thought about so sche. Hearing footsteps outside the door, Mariah, with a guilty conscience, was startled and asked anxiously, "Who is it?"

Claire stood at the door, nodded politely at Mariah, and said, "It's . I ca to take my mother's belongings." Seeing that it was Claire, Mariah's eyes lit up, and she quickly greeted her, saying, "Claire, co in quickly." Looking at Mariah's enthusiastic deanor, Claire knew exactly what Mariah was thinking.

"This woman is up to no good," Claire thought to herself.

"Aunt Mariah, Mr. Miller just happened to co with

to pick up my mother's belongings, and after we're done, we'll leave." Mariah heard the distance in Claire's tone, and a hint of displeasure flashed across her face. She thought to herself that Claire was ignorant and disrespectful.

"But she's just a country bumpkin. Who does she think she is, Mrs. Miller? Ha!" Mariah couldn't even fathom that. However, she didn't forget the purpose of calling Claire here. "Okay then, I won't delay your ti. Let's hurry so you can leave."

"Here, this is your mother's relic." Mariah took out an iron box and handed it to Claire, then said:

"Your mother used to run a dical clinic before she passed away, but in recent years, the Smith family's business has been very bad, and it has been transferred to soone else."

Claire's heart tightened at the news, and she quickly asked, "Transferred? Who did it transfer to?" Mariah's mouth twitched imperceptibly. "If you have the intention to take it back, I can help you contact the person."

Claire nodded quickly, unaware that she had fallen into Mariah's trap, and said anxiously, "Thank you so much, Aunt."

After the lesson earlier, Anna dared not approach Alex anymore. She wouldn't be foolish enough to fall into the lion's den herself.

As for Sebastian, he also didn't dare to provoke Alex, afraid that he might lose favor when it ca to business dealings. With a smile on his face, he constantly looked for topics to discuss.

When Claire ca downstairs, everyone breathed a sigh of relief. Alex stood up imdiately and walked towards Claire, holding her hands affectionately, and said, "Can we go now?"

Looking at Alex's soft but angry eyes, she could see that he was annoyed with this duo, and it was written all over his face despite his soft gaze, which made Claire's deep emotions resurface a little.

Claire felt a little sorry and said, "Sorry, we've kept you waiting. Let's leave now."

As soon as the two of them left, Anna imdiately stood up from her spot and said, "Mom, this country bumpkin is too arrogant. I can't stand her. Mom, please, let's do sothing about her. I really can't stand her."

Mariah quickly turned her head and made a gesture of silence, whispering, "Lower your voice, you little brat. How dare you say anything? Do you wish that death should befall you? You're really not afraid of death to provoke trouble with the big boss."

"I'm telling you, if you offend Alex, even if I spend all my money, I won't be able to save you!" As she said this, Mariah felt a chill in her heart. She had experienced Alex's thods countless tis in the business world.

Over the years, the Smith family had also had many business dealings with the Miller family because of the relationship between the late Smith old man and the Miller family's old man. At first, she didn't take this young man seriously.

But every ti, she couldn't get any benefits from him. Moreover, this person would retaliate for even the slightest grievance that soone may intentionally or unintentionally cause him.

If you offend him, he would make sure that you were not able to survive in City A.

With the ntion of Alex, Anna's jealousy intensified. She rembered how Alex was doting on Claire, not even considering the fact that she was around. She stepped forward and grabbed Mariah's arm, saying, "Mom, how could that country bumpkin Claire be worthy of Mr. Miller? A man as outstanding as Mr. Miller should be..." Anna stopped herself and blushed with shyness. Mariah imdiately understood what was going on in her head. "You little girl, could it be that you've fallen for your sister's man?"

Sebastian was angry and shouted at her for the first ti, "Are you so obsessed with her n? Not a few days ago, you had an affair with Tristan, and now that she's married and will be bringing

benefits to the company, you are eyeing that man too."

"Look, if Alex had married you instead of her, I wouldn't have had any problem, but in this case, he directly asked for your sister's hand in marriage. Don't let people criticize my family."
