Chapter 139: Two birds
The glass she was holding slipped from her hand and shattered on the floor, cutting her palm. Blood dripped from the wound.
"Ouch, it hurts," Lucy gasped, clutching her bleeding hand, her face twisted in pain. She wanted to get up to get a band-aid, but she felt too weak. All she could do was lie on the sofa, frowning, as the pain in her heart outweighed the pain in her palm.
She wanted to transfer all her resentnt and anguish onto Claire, but Josh had refused to help her.
"Josh, how could you do this to ..." Lucy muttered to herself.
Suddenly, hurried footsteps echoed from the hallway. Her mother rushed through the door, her face filled with concern as she quickly moved to Lucy’s side, holding her close.
"My dear daughter, what happened to you?"
Lucy saw it was her mother and felt her heart finally ease. She raised her head, looked at her mother, and hugged her neck, bursting into tears.
"Mom, they bullied . They tead up to deceive , saying that Josh likes Claire. Mom, I feel so hurt. I really love Josh, but he doesn’t love . I’m so sad... I’m so upset..."
Hearing Lucy’s words, her mother’s expression darkened. "That scoundrel! I’ll go find him and settle the score!"
She was about to leave, but Lucy quickly grabbed her sleeve. "Mom, no, please don’t go."
Her mother paused. "Are you still upset over Josh?"
Lucy nodded, looking heartbroken. "Mom, I know I was wrong. I know I shouldn’t have fought Claire for a boyfriend. But I really love Josh, more than I can even explain. I don’t even know when I started to feel this way..."
Lucy looked as fragile as a rain-drenched flower, tugging at her mother’s heart. Her daughter had been through so much already.
"Don’t worry, dear. I’ll be with you, and I won’t let anyone hurt you," her mother soothed, patting her shoulder.
Hearing this, Lucy’s tears began to dry. She looked up at her mother with a weak smile.
"Thank you, Mom. Hearing that makes
feel better."
Her mother sighed, looking at her daughter with pity.
Why did such a kind child have to go through so much pain? The thought passed through her mind briefly, but she set it aside. Her heart ached for Lucy’s predicant, yet she held firm. Lucy had been with Josh for three years, and he had always maintained a distance. anwhile, Claire, who had only known him for two days, was already rumored to be his girlfriend. It was simply unfair.
"Don’t worry, dear. I’ll make sure you get justice," her mother said firmly.
Lucy was stunned by her mother’s words, then felt a wave of joy.
"Mom..."
"Don’t worry. I’ll help you get revenge."
With that, her mother helped her up, then turned to their maid. "Li Sao, please call the doctor imdiately."
The maid nodded and hurried off. Soon, the doctor arrived, treated Lucy’s wound, and advised her to rest.
Once he left, the maid looked at Lucy, who was still tearful on the sofa. Gently, she urged, "Miss Lucy, why don’t you take a shower, and then eat sothing?"
"Okay..." Lucy murmured, finally calming down.
Li Sao guided her to the bathroom, setting out fresh pajamas. Lucy closed the door and looked at her reflection in the mirror—her eyes red from crying. She splashed cold water on her face, the icy shock bringing a bit of clarity. She felt like a discarded woman, which only intensified her bitterness.
Why did Claire get to be with Josh and enjoy his love, while she was left to suffer? The more she thought about it, the angrier she beca. Her resolve to retaliate against Claire only grew stronger. Tonight’s events gave her an opportunity, and with her mother’s support, her plan felt flawless.
As long as she could catch Josh and Claire together, Claire would never be able to clear her na.
A sly smile spread across Lucy’s face. After drying off and changing, she walked back to the living room, picked up her phone, and dialed a number.
"Hello?" a lazy voice answered on the other end.
"Miss Anna?" Lucy’s lips curled into a smile. "This is Lucy. I have sothing I’d like to discuss with you."
Anna was slightly taken aback by Lucy’s sudden call, but asked, "What is it?"
Lucy’s smile deepened. "It’s about Claire."
Anna instantly grew cautious, replying quickly, "I’m sorry, I don’t know anyone by that na."
On the other end of the phone, Anna seed to hesitate for a mont.
Seeing this, Lucy continued, "You don’t have to worry about
hurting you. I think we can work together quite pleasantly."
Anna was silent for a mont before asking, "Miss Lucy, may I ask what this cooperation entails?"
Lucy narrowed her eyes and replied, "Of course, it’s to make that woman, Claire, disappear."
"Disappear?" Anna seed to find it amusing.
"I’m sorry, I don’t know how you got my contact information, but I’m not interested in what you’re proposing." With that, Anna hung up.
Lucy looked at the dark screen, a hint of displeasure flashing across her face. This woman was far too cheerful at the slightest bit of optimism. If it weren’t for revenge, she wouldn’t have made that phone call.
But...
A strange smile appeared on Lucy’s lips.
"Claire, I won’t let you go so easily. I’ll torture you slowly, make you wish for death."
Lucy took a deep breath, suppressing her hatred. This ti, she couldn’t let Claire escape.
anwhile, on the other end, Anna held her phone with mixed emotions. With Cole dead, she had lost her backing and couldn’t rely on the Smith family’s power anymore. If Claire and Alex found her, her fate might be even worse than Cole’s.
"But are we just going to sit here and wait for death?" Anna thought to herself. "Right now, Claire is sick, and I don’t have ti to go looking for trouble. But what if she recovers?" Anna shook her head, unwilling to think further. Then, her gaze fell on the phone and the call she had received earlier—from Lucy, the only daughter of the prominent family business, one of the largest information technology firms in the country. If she could gain Lucy’s support, perhaps she could completely eliminate the threat of Claire.
After much hesitation, Anna decided to try teaming up with Lucy. She imdiately called her back. The phone rang a few tis before soone picked up. Hearing Lucy’s familiar voice on the other end, Anna breathed a sigh of relief. She tried to sound casual as she spoke, "Lucy, about the cooperation you ntioned earlier..."
Lucy imdiately grasped Anna’s intent, chuckling softly. "Don’t worry, since I promised to help you, I won’t go back on my word. However..." Lucy deliberately paused before continuing, "I’ll need ti to prepare."
Anna grew impatient. "How long do you need, Lucy?"
"Anywhere from two weeks to a year," Lucy replied with a hint of teasing in her tone.
Anna was nearly driven mad by Lucy’s words. She gritted her teeth. "Lucy, you know my situation. I don’t have ti to waste. I hope you decide soon, or I’ll consider you an enemy."
Lucy sneered. "Really, Anna?"
Lucy’s casual disdain made Anna angrier. "What’s your attitude?" she snapped.
Lucy’s tone was filled with sarcasm. "Anna, don’t forget, you’re the one begging . If I were you, I’d be more sensible. Work with . Otherwise, when I expose your scandal, you won’t even get the chance to end things on your own terms."
Hearing this, Anna froze. Lucy was right. At this mont, she was little more than a stray dog, with no right to challenge Lucy. After considering for a mont, Anna softened her tone and said, "Fine, Miss Lucy, just tell
what you need
to do. I’ll do my best to cooperate."
Lucy nodded in satisfaction. "Good."
"So, what do you want
to do? Just tell !"
"It’s simple."
"What is it?"
"I’ll give you so information, and your Smith family dia connections will handle spreading the news."
Anna frowned. "Do you want
to ruin Claire?"
"How could that be?" Lucy replied, her voice chilling. "I won’t let her die. I’ll make her wish she were dead."
"You..." A sinking feeling gripped Anna’s heart.
Claire was indeed a troublemaker, and Lucy’s plan was killing two birds with one stone. However, given her situation, Anna had no choice but to agree. She nodded and said, "Alright, when do we start?"
"The sooner, the better," Lucy replied.
"Alright, I’ll wait for your ssage," Anna said, then hung up.
After ending the call, Anna imdiately contacted the Smith family’s dia outlets. That evening, a team of reporters sward into the hospital.
It was a private facility that regular people couldn’t easily enter, so these reporters had so inside connections. Lucy stood at the hospital entrance, a cold, cruel smile on her face.
She knew this wouldn’t stay hidden from Josh. Since that was the case, she would expose everything publicly and see how Claire would dare act arrogant afterward.
