Arthur’s enhanced reflexes scread warnings, but his mind refused to process what his eyes were seeing.

The magical signature was impossible—corrupted royal bloodline wreathed in stolen dragon essence, power that should have been forever beyond his reach.

Every instinct Arthur possessed had detected the presence behind him, yet sohow missed the most crucial detail: the familiar magical resonance that should have been imdiately recognizable.

His brother’s signature had changed so fundantally that Arthur’s system had classified him as an unknown threat.

"Three years of planning," Gareth said conversationally, stepping into Arthur’s peripheral vision with predatory grace. "But only a week of actual enhancent. Amazing how quickly dragon essence can rebuild what was broken, don’t you think?"

[THREAT ASSESSNT: CRITICAL]

[MAGICAL SIGNATURE: CORRUPTED ROYAL BLOODLINE - 847% POWER INCREASE]

[DRAGON ESSENCE ENHANCENT: ACTIVE]

[RECOMNDED ACTION: IMDIATE WITHDRAWAL]

Arthur turned slowly, keeping his movents deliberately calm while his mind raced through the implications. The brother he’d known—magically crippled since their sparring accident years ago, bitter but still fundantally family—stood before him radiating power.

"Gareth." Arthur’s voice ca out steady. "I have to say, you’re looking... different."

His brother’s laugh held no warmth. Where Gareth had once been lean to the point of gauntness, stolen dragon essence had filled out his fra with predatory muscle. His eyes, once dull brown, now blazed with silver-touched crimson.

"Different is one word for it," Gareth replied. "Reborn might be more accurate. You know, Arthur, I used to dream about this mont—the day I’d finally be able to look you in the eye as an equal."

"We were always equals," Arthur said carefully, every word chosen to buy ti while his enhanced perception mapped potential escape routes. "You’re my brother."

"Your crippled brother," Gareth’s voice turned venomous. Do you have any idea what it’s like, Arthur? Watching soone else live the life that should have been yours?"

The words hit deeper than Arthur expected. The old guilt—over the sparring that had crippled Gareth’s magic, over taking his place in the succession, over every advantage his transmigration had given him.

But beneath the guilt was sothing colder: the realization that this betrayal ran deeper than simple resentnt.

"How long?" Arthur asked quietly. "How long have you been working with the Syndicate?"

Gareth’s smile was all predator now. "

Three years of careful planning, Arthur. Three years of feeding them information about our defenses, our patrol routes, our political alliances. The Coalition invasion? My suggestion. A perfect distraction while the real work happened down here."

[EMOTIONAL IMPACT DETECTED]

[STRESS LEVELS: ELEVATED]

[BOND SYNCHRONIZATION: WAVERING]

[SYLRATHI CONTACT: INTERFERENCE DETECTED]

Arthur felt the connection to Sylrathi flicker and fade, as if sothing was actively jamming their bond. Gareth noticed his concentration shift and chuckled.

"Trying to reach your elven lover? The Syndicate has such interesting toys, Arthur. Dragon essence doesn’t just enhance physical capabilities—it can disrupt magical bonds, especially ones as intimate as yours." Gareth’s eyes glead with satisfaction. "You’re quite alone now, brother."

The isolation hit Arthur like a physical blow. After days of constant connection to Sylrathi, the sudden severing of their bond left him feeling exposed and vulnerable. But beneath the emotional impact, his strategic mind was already adapting.

Gareth wanted sothing. This wasn’t an ambush or an execution—it was a negotiation. His brother had revealed himself for a specific purpose, which ant Arthur still had leverage.

"You ca here for a reason," Arthur said, letting a hint of curiosity into his voice. "If you wanted dead, you’d have tried already. What do you want, Gareth?"

"I want to show you sothing, Arthur. Sothing that will change how you see this entire situation." Gareth gestured toward a corridor leading deeper into the Sanctum. "Trust , you’re going to find this very... illuminating."

Arthur could see through the facade—the careful manipulation, the attempt to lead him deeper into enemy territory. But playing along might be his only chance to reach Sera before the ritual completed. And if Gareth thought he was in control, he might reveal more than he intended.

"Lead the way," Arthur said, his hand resting casually on his sword hilt. "I’m curious to see what’s worth betraying your own family for."

They walked through corridors carved from living rock, the walls weeping moisture that stead in the unnatural heat.

Gareth moved with newfound confidence, no longer cripple power prince Arthur rembered. Dragon essence had transford him into sothing that walked the line between human and other.

"Do you rember," Gareth said as they descended a spiral staircase, "when we were children? Before the accident? We used to dream about ruling together, about being the greatest princes Lyranth had ever seen."

"I rember," Arthur replied carefully, his enhanced senses mapping every guard position, every potential weapon, every possible advantage. "You wanted to be a hero like the Seven legends."

"And you wanted to be king." Gareth’s voice carried old pain beneath the corruption. "Even then, even before you were... whatever you are now. You always had that hunger for power, Arthur. At least now you’re honest about it."

They reached a heavy door marked with Syndicate runes that pulsed with malevolent energy. Gareth placed his hand on the lock, and Arthur felt the wash of corrupted magic as the barriers dissolved.

"After you see this," Gareth said, pushing the door open, "you’ll understand why everything had to happen this way. Why the old world needed to burn for sothing better to rise."

The chamber beyond stole Arthur’s breath.

Sera Nightwind hung suspended in the center of a ritual circle that defied comprehension. Essence-draining chains wrapped around her legs. The dragon that had once been magnificent was now a shadow of herself—scales dulled by constant drain.

But her eyes fixed on Arthur with imdiate, desperate recognition.

Lustborn. The word echoed in his mind, not spoken but projected directly into his consciousness. You ca. I knew... I knew you would feel my call.

Arthur’s rage was imdiate and absolute. The clinical detachnt that had carried him through interrogating Vex, through planning this mission, through managing kingdom politics—all of it evaporated in the face of seeing what they had done to her.

"Magnificent, isn’t she?" Gareth said, misreading Arthur’s expression. "A week of careful essence extraction, and she’s been calling across half the realm. Do you know what that ans, Arthur? She’s been summoning you specifically. Dragon essence seeks its perfect magical complent."

Sera’s ntal voice whispered again in Arthur’s consciousness: The chains... they amplify my distress calls but prevent escape. I have been... have been calling for you for days, hoping... hoping soone would hear.

Arthur forced his expression to remain neutral while his heart broke for what she had endured. Three years of torture, of having her essence slowly drained while she desperately called for help that might never co.

"She’s been calling for specifically?" Arthur asked, letting calculated interest replace the fury in his voice.

"Dragon essence and Incubus energy are natural complents," Gareth explained, moving closer to the suspended dragon with casual cruelty. "The Syndicate’s research has been... illuminating. They’ve learned so much about magical synergies, about power structures that most people never dream of."

Sera’s eyes never left Arthur’s face, and he could see the intelligence burning there—ancient, powerful, and completely aware of the deception being played out before her.

"The ritual?" Arthur asked, still playing the interested brother while his mind calculated distances, angles, the ti it would take to reach her.

"Tomorrow night, during the lunar convergence," Gareth said with satisfaction. "Her essence will open a permanent gateway to realms beyond our own. The Syndicate’s true masters will finally be able to cross over permanently."

[MISSION TILINE UPDATE]

[RITUAL COMPLETION: 27 HOURS, 43 MINUTES]

[PRISONER STATUS: CRITICAL - IMDIATE EXTRACTION REQUIRED]

[BOND INTERFERENCE: ONGOING]

Arthur stepped closer to Sera, and her ntal voice grew stronger:The other prisoners... twelve souls on the level below us. They drain us all to power their circles. Arthur Lionheart... I know your true nature. I have been waiting.

"Do you trust now?" Gareth asked, pride evident in his voice. "Do you see what we’re building here? Power beyond anything the old kingdoms ever dread of."

Arthur looked at his brother—really looked at him—and saw not the bitter, crippled prince he rembered, but sothing wearing his brother’s face. The corruption ran deeper than stolen dragon essence. This thing had been planning, manipulating, betraying for years.

"It’s impressive," Arthur said carefully. "But Gareth... how do I know you won’t just drain my essence too once you get what you want?"

His brother’s laugh held genuine amusent. "Because I need you, Arthur. The Syndicate has taught so much about power dynamics, about magical resonance. Your Incubus powers isn’t just rare—it’s the key to everything. Combined with dragon essence, we could reshape reality itself."

There it was. Gareth didn’t want to kill him—he wanted to use him. To sohow steal or corrupt Arthur’s system for his own purposes.

Arthur reached out as if to touch one of Sera’s chains, and imdiately felt the shock of protective wards. But in that brief contact, he managed to project a single thought: Hold on. I’m going to get you out of here.

Her ntal response was imdiate: Be careful, Lustborn. That person... he is no longer entirely human. The corruption runs deeper than you know.

"Fascinating magic," Arthur said aloud, pulling his hand back from the chains. "The Syndicate really has mastered essence manipulation."

"They’ve mastered so much more than that," Gareth replied. "Arthur, what I’m offering you is partnership. Real partnership, between equals. Imagine what we could accomplish together—your system, my enhancent, dragon essence flowing between us."

Arthur nodded slowly, as if considering the offer. In reality, he was calculating the impossible odds. Gareth was more powerful than him now, the chamber was heavily warded, Sylrathi was cut off, and twenty-seven hours remained before Sera and the other prisoners were sacrificed to open dinsional gateways.

But Arthur had faced impossible odds before. And this ti, he wasn’t fighting just for strategy or politics or even survival.

He was fighting for family—the family he’d chosen, the bonds he’d built, and the innocent lives being tortured in the levels below.

"Show more," Arthur said, eting his brother’s gaze. "I want to understand exactly what you’re offering."

Gareth’s smile was triumphant. "Now you’re thinking like a true prince, brother. Co—there’s so much more you need to see."

As they turned to leave the chamber, Arthur caught Sera’s eye one final ti.

She knew he was playing a role. She knew he would return.
