Chapter 61: Chapter 61 Xu Family’s Matriarch Chapter 61: Chapter 61 Xu Family’s Matriarch Liu Dama spoke of going to settle accounts with Matchmaker Li, but halfway there, her anger subsided and she cald down a bit. If she really caused trouble for Matchmaker Li, and it got out, who knows if people would think she was being unreasonable? Who then would dare to propose a match for her Erni?

After all, she still had two sons who hadn’t taken wives yet.

It was also possible that Shen Mianmian had mistaken soone for another, so if she went to confront Matchmaker Li like that, it would be too impulsive.

She should investigate in private first!

With this in mind, Liu Dama turned around and headed ho. At the entrance to the village, she ran into Erni and Xiaocui, who were rushing over in a hurry.

Erni’s worry was so profound her hair might well have started smoking; seeing Liu Dama returning finally allowed her to breathe a sigh of relief.

“Mom, why are you so impulsive?” Erni asked. “When matchmakers make matches, which one of them doesn’t praise the other party? If we feel soone isn’t suitable, we can just say we don’t fancy them and don’t wish to proceed, right?”

Blaming the matchmaker directly would make others think they were unreasonably aggressive once word got out.

“Wasn’t I just acting on impulse?” Liu Dama lanted.

Liu Dama knew she hadn’t thought things through beforehand.

Erni sighed with frustration, “It’s fortunate Dad went to help Uncle and hasn’t returned yet, otherwise he’d definitely have a word about you.”

Before Liu Dama could respond, Erni continued, “I said just yesterday that I didn’t feel a spark, but you and Dad insisted that person seed nice because of what Matchmaker Li said.”

“Your father and I thought that their family’s conditions were good and that marrying there would bring you a good life,” Liu Dama defended. “If we knew he was such a person, do you think we’d set you up for a fall? We thought you could really marry into a good family, but who knew it would turn out like this?” Her heart clung to a sliver of hope. “Maybe Mianmian did mistake the person. Tomorrow your father and I will go near their village to ask around. If they truly are such bad people, we can’t possibly let you marry into that family.”

“Let’s talk about it back at the house! It’s freezing to death out here; just look at Xiaocui trembling,” Erni said.

Erni had no desire to discuss the issue on the road, lest soone overhear them and make a laughingstock of them behind their backs.

She was eighteen or nineteen—an age when one is self-conscious and prideful.

Seeing her daughter so chilled, Liu Dama’s heart went out to her, and she led the way ho, all the while unable to keep from muttering to herself.

“If your dad knew that the Xu family was like that, who knows how angry he’d get?” she whispered.

Xiaocui, only fifteen or sixteen, still had no say in the household, and silently followed the two back ho.

A daughter’s marriage is no trivial matter. When her husband returned ho that night, Liu Dama discussed the matter with him. The man’s face darkened upon hearing it.

The next day at the crack of dawn, the couple headed for Shanghe Village. When they asked about the Xu family, people didn’t explicitly say anything negative, but their faces revealed a sneering mockery as they pointed to a woman standing at soone else’s doorstep, bowl in hand, cursing a blue streak.

“The family you’re asking about—that’s her ho.”

“…”

The sight of the woman, capable of cursing soone’s ancestors for eighteen generations, turned Liu Dama’s husband furious, his face a shade of iron blue. He huffed, turned the bike around, and left.

Liu Dama was so angry she skipped lunch.

In the afternoon, Matchmaker Li ca by to inquire when they would set a date to fix the marriage, only to find that Liu Dama’s family had a change of heart.

Having been a matchmaker for many years, she guessed that Liu Dama must have found sothing out, so she probed deliberately.

“Liu Dajie, what happened here?” she inquired. “Everything seed fine yesterday, and the children seed to like each other. Why does Erni not wish to proceed today?”
