The clerk feared the two would leave and not return, so she suggested they pay for the al first. Ruan Yiqian said nothing, paid, and then took the two of them away.
The little boy was riding in a vehicle for the first ti and was extrely nervous; he even got lost as soon as he sat in the car. When they arrived under a big bridge, both Ruan Yiqian and Li Shiping were shocked. The boy’s family was actually living under a bridge in a cavity in the wall, where the wind blew through and they were bitten by nurous mosquitoes.
The little boy’s mother was lying on a pile of dry straw under the bridge, covered with a threadbare sheet. Sensing soone’s presence, the boy’s mother slowly opened her eyes. She waved to her son in terror, “Tuantuan, co here quickly.”
“Mom,” the boy ran over and helped the woman up, “Don’t be afraid, they are good people, they bought noodles.”
As he spoke, the little boy opened the lunch box, “Mom, are you hungry? Eat the noodles quickly.”
“I’m not hungry.” The woman’s eyes reddened, and she touched the boy’s hair with a heartache, while becoming even more vigilant, fearing that the two were child kidnappers.
Sensing the woman’s wariness, Li Shiping said softly, “Sister, don’t be afraid, we are not bad people. We just saw this little boy outside asking for food and felt sorry for him; and upon hearing that you were sick, we wanted to see if you needed any help.”
Li Shiping had lived without worrying about food and drink since she was little, and the toughest tis she had were those spent with Wan Dongcheng. However, compared to the woman’s situation, her life was many tis better.
While Li Shiping was emotionally moved, Ruan Yiqian remained much more composed. He had gone to many places doing business and knew there were many pitiable people in this world like this woman. They just hadn’t seen them.
However, it was indeed rare to find a family living under a bridge and sleeping on a pile of straw in Beijing.
“We don’t need help, you can go!” After rejecting Li Shiping, the woman began chastising her child, “How many tis have I told you not to run around everywhere? Why don’t you listen? And bringing people back, do you want to make even more upset?”
“Mom, I wanted to get you sothing to eat, you haven’t had a full al in days.” The little boy looked a bit aggrieved, but still stubbornly held the noodles out for the woman to eat.
Her eyes reddening, the woman spoke sternly, “I don’t want to eat. You’re not allowed to go out begging for food anymore. If soone deceives and sells you, I wouldn’t even know.”
Clearly, these words were intended for Ruan Yiqian and Li Shiping to hear.
Li Shiping hurried to clarify, “Sister, don’t get us wrong, we really aren’t bad people, we just ca to look after seeing him in a pitiable state.”
While saying this, she approached the woman to take a closer look, “Sister, what illness do you have? Have you seen a doctor?”
The woman glared at Li Shiping, unwilling to engage with her. Ruan Yiqian couldn’t watch this any longer and spoke bluntly.
“If we were child traffickers, we would have sold him directly, why would we bother bringing him back?”
Hearing this, the woman thought about it and seed to realize that was true. Her expression softened and her attitude improved sowhat, saying, “My old back problem has been acting up; I’ve been bedridden and can’t move these past few days. I’ve been dragging it out because I don’t have money for treatnt.”
