Zhu Yun was taken aback, “You know them too? You aren’t friends with Yang Xiaoxi and Shen Mianmian, are you?”
Shen Mianmian and Yang Xiaoxi had spent a long ti in Beijing and had gotten to know quite a few people, Zhu Yun knew that. Unlike her, whose husband’s relatives looked down on her and because she always stayed at ho taking care of the children, she hardly had any friends.
“Not exactly friends, just acquaintances,” the woman said. “I had a bit of a misunderstanding with them before, so we’re not on good terms.”
Hearing that they weren’t on good terms, Zhu Yun felt like she had found an ally and imdiately said, “I don’t get along with them either. Yang Xiaoxi is my cousin, and these past years becoming a big star and earning so money, she started looking down on us relatives, especially . My family has been having so difficulties, and when I asked her to lend so money to get by, she refused. She values money over everything else.”
“That’s a bit too much,” the woman agreed. “Being a big star does make a lot of money. Relatives should help each other out. If she has money, she should help you; if you had money, you should help her. That way everyone’s life gets better. Looking down on poor relatives once you make money isn’t right; just because you don’t have money now doesn’t an you won’t have any in the future.”
“Isn’t that the truth? When we were kids, she often wore my clothes, and whatever good food I had at my house, I gave it to her. I never thought she would grow up to be such an ingrate,” Zhu Yun went on for quite a while before rembering to ask the woman’s na. “Oh, what’s your na, by the way? I’m Zhu Yun.”
“I’m Tang Ling,” Tang Ling said with a smile.
“That’s a nice na,” Zhu Yun said, assessing Tang Ling. “Judging by your accent, you’re from Beijing too, aren’t you?”
“Yes,” Tang Ling nodded.
“My husband is from Beijing too,” Tang Ling continued, making a face. “You seem pretty easy to get along with, not like other people from Beijing who despise us outsiders and always look down upon .”
“You an your in-laws?” Tang Ling said. “There are so locals who look down on people from other places, but that’s not everyone; it’s just a minority.”
“I used to not believe it, but now I do,” Zhu Yun chuckled. “Where do you live? Next ti, we should hang out. I don’t have any friends here; it gets really boring just by myself. Oh, my family just opened a grocery store up front. Next ti you need to buy anything, co to my store. I’ll give you a discount. Don’t go to other stores; they’re expensive and the items aren’t good.”
“Sure!” Tang Ling continued walking with her. “I might as well drop by your grocery store and see if there’s anything I need, just to know the way and hang out with you soti.”
“That would be great.”
Zhu Yun cheerfully led her to the front of the supermarket. Since her husband had gone out to play cards, the supermarket door was locked; she unlocked it, and so flies flew out, causing her to laugh awkwardly.
“I forgot to collect the dinner dishes yesterday, and it attracted so flies. Don’t mind it! It’s hard to keep up with cleaning while taking care of the kids.”
“No worries, I understand, I’ve got a daughter too. Sotis kids don’t behave, and you don’t even have ti to eat.” A flash of disdain flickered in Tang Ling’s eyes, but her words were kind.
The supermarket wasn’t big, and the floor was covered with miscellaneous goods and dirt; the shelves were even dustier. Tang Ling picked a box of candies from the shelf near the door and said, “I’ll buy so candies for the kids.”
“These are tasty; my daughter likes them too. Buy so more; I’ll give you a better price.” Zhu Yun grabbed two more boxes and handed them to Tang Ling, who did not refuse.
