"Mom, what’s wrong?" Tang Yue keenly sensed that sothing was off with Zhang Hualian. It seed like ever since Lian Qingyang left, sothing had been bothering her, as if hiding a secret. Tang Yue sat up straight and asked, "Mom, is it because you’re not used to staying in Jing City?"
Jing City isn’t as warm as Wangjiang County in the south; it’s drier here. Even Tang Yue had trouble adjusting when she first arrived.
"No."
Zhang Hualian shook her head and said, "Wherever you are, dear, I’m there too. It’s not about discomfort; it’s just..."
She hesitated, prompting Tang Yue to inquire further, "Mom, I’m your own daughter, your flesh and blood. What is it that you can’t tell ?"
Tang Yue blinked her bright eyes, determined to seize this opportunity to ask clearly.
"It’s nothing. By the way, Qingyang recently got you a new computer. Shouldn’t you give him sothing in return?" Zhang Hualian changed the subject.
Tang Yue gave her a deep look but didn’t press further, saying, "Mom, I made all of Xiao Yang’s clothes by hand. He’s happy enough just coming over for als."
Lian Qingyang always had a keen interest in Dad’s cooking.
"By the way, I vaguely heard you ntion, Qingyang isn’t Lian He’s child?" Zhang Hualian inquired, seemingly very curious about this matter. She said, "If Lian Qingqing looks just like Sun Rou, and neither are Lian He’s children, then whose child is Qingyang?"
Past dealings with Lian He didn’t bother Zhang Hualian anymore; she considered it a bygone Chapter.
"Not quite sure." Tang Yue shook her head and said, "Si Yu investigated previously, and found a clue at a midwife’s place, but the trail went cold. We couldn’t pinpoint who the biological parents are."
"A midwife?" Zhang Hualian paused her knitting, nearly dropping it, her voice filled with shock.
Tang Yue noticed her interest and said, "Mom, why the sudden concern about this?"
"Do you rember the midwife’s surna?" Zhang Hualian put down the knitting, asking excitedly.
Perhaps Zhang Hualian’s urgency stirred sothing in Tang Yue; she sensed her mother’s reaction was over the top. A thought crossed her mind, but it seed impossible. She’d never heard of any siblings all these years.
"Mom, why are you asking about the midwife?" Tang Yue retorted instead of answering.
"Xiao Yue." Zhang Hualian was silent for a while before speaking, "Xiao Yue, when you were born, your grandmother and I felt sothing was amiss. My belly was big, but you were tiny. They later attributed it to abundant amniotic fluid, so we didn’t think much of it. But lately, I’ve been pondering, wondering if I gave birth to another child after I passed out?"
"Mom, how many children did you deliver back then?" Tang Yue stared at Zhang Hualian in amazent.
Zhang Hualian shook her head cluelessly, "I only knew of you. It was tough giving birth to you and I fainted afterward."
"What about Grandma? Wasn’t she there? How could she not know if there were two?" Tang Yue sat upright and asked seriously, "Mom, who delivered you?"
"A passing midwife, her surna was Liu." Zhang Hualian couldn’t summarize briefly, so she recounted the past in detail.
Tang Yue always knew Zhang Hualian nearly lost her life giving birth, but she never knew about this twist. Her eyes darted as she asked, "Mom, you ntioned passing out while Grandma went to deliver als to Grandpa and Uncle in the fields. Did the midwife Liu leave empty-handed?"
"No, she was a passing midwife, carrying a basket." Zhang Hualian said uncertainly. Ti had blurred her mories, and she hadn’t dwelled on it back then.
"Mom, if there was another child, don’t you rember it?" Tang Yue asked again.
"No."
Zhang Hualian shook her head; her faint was filled with pain, leaving no mory.
"Mom, don’t worry. We’ll take our ti. Si Yu never ntioned the midwife’s surna; I’ll ask when he returns." Tang Yue consoled her.
Zhang Hualian nodded, seeing Tang Yue’s earnest expression. She smiled bitterly, "Xiao Yue, even I find it strange, feeling I could be overthinking."
"Mom, whether it’s overthinking or not, we’ll seek the truth to find out." Tang Yue decided to uncover the truth, no matter what it might be.
"Xiao Yue, I brought you so chicken soup noodles today." ng Siyu entered with a thermos, opening it to release the fragrant aroma of chicken soup.
Tang Yue’s stomach growled with hunger, and she inhaled deeply, "Slls so good. Mom, would you like so too?"
"No, you eat." Zhang Hualian watched Tang Yue tenderly, wishing to give her the best.
Tang Yue, feeling hungry, decided to fill up first. The entire thermos of chicken soup noodles went into her stomach. She asked, "Si Yu, when you investigated Qingyang, you ntioned a midwife. What’s her surna?"
"Liu." ng Siyu had a solid mory.
Zhang Hualian’s face changed instantly.
Holding Tang Yue’s hand tightly, she asked anxiously, "Then, Xiao Yang is a child the midwife took from where?"
"That midwife Liu is quite old and a bit muddle-headed, so we couldn’t extract anything significant." ng Siyu’s deep eyes flickered. He felt as if sothing significant had transpired during his brief absence.
"What does midwife Liu look like?" Zhang Hualian asked, but quickly sighed, "I don’t recall her appearance. Knowing won’t necessarily help identify her."
"Mom, don’t lose heart. We’ll figure it out," Tang Yue reassured her. When she returned to her room, Tang Yue recounted Zhang Hualian’s story and suspicions.
"Aren’t you and Qingyang half a year apart?" ng Siyu asked.
"Yes, half a year apart. But who can definitively say what year or month Qingyang was born?"
In her previous life, Tang Yue read novels with wild imaginations. She asked, "Si Yu, don’t you think Qingyang and I look a bit alike?"
Looking at his expectant young wife, ng Siyu couldn’t help but say, "Dear, don’t get your hopes up. Lian He and Lian Qingyang did a paternity test; there’s no biological relation."
