"You need to pull yourself together, so you can leave a good impression after the court session," Su Ziceng said, taking out a tube of lipstick and a bottle of lotion from her bag, placing a comb in front of her. These were the only items she could bring in, as glass items like mirrors were not allowed, "Yishao has already spoken to them, you can ask for anything you need."
Yan Wuxu must have suffered a lot here.
"Thank you," Yan Wuxu lowered her head and accepted the costics Su Ziceng handed over.
"I will be busy with wedding preparations, so I might not be able to visit you," Su Ziceng said before standing up, feeling suffocated in the gloomy detention room.
"Congratulations, Hang Yishao loves you very much," Yan Wuxu said softly.
After Su Ziceng left, the guard ca in, urging Yan Wuxu to hurry back.
"Can I make a phone call? I have sothing to say to the Miss Su who was just here," Yan Wuxu pleaded, having not heard any external voices other than Su Ziceng’s for a long ti.
"All this fuss," the guard replied rudely, but rembering the orders from his superiors to take care of her, he allowed her to make a call. Anyway, the trial hadn’t started yet and she was only a suspect at present.
Yan Wuxu dialed a few familiar numbers; she wasn’t calling Su Ziceng, she wanted to hear her baby’s voice again. Just before she ca here, she had spoken to the couple who adopted her child. The baby could now speak, his voice grating over the phone, calling her "Mommy," which was all the support Yan Wuxu had now.
The phone’s "beep" sound seed incredibly long as Yan Wuxu watched the guards around her while trying to keep her voice as natural as possible. She didn’t want her child to sense anything was wrong.
Finally, a voice ca through the phone; it had been over half a month, and by now, the baby should be able to clearly call out "Mommy."
The choked response made Yan Wuxu’s hand holding the receiver loosen. The coiled phone cord straightened out suddenly.
"Hurry back once you are done," the guard cursed as he pushed Yan Wuxu back in.
The child had a high fever recently and developed ningitis. The sanitation at the local hospital was poor, and the couple wanted to transfer the child to Mo City Hospital, but they had no money and the hospital refused to admit the child. They could not reach Yan Wuxu and didn’t know whom else to contact. The delay in treatnt led to the baby’s death last week.
ningitis, it was ningitis. Yan Wuxu’s crying sounds gargled in her throat. Her sobs blocked her breathing, turning her face first red, then pale, and for several minutes, she could not breathe normally.
There was nothing in the detention room for her to vent on, and she could only bite into the moldy pillow. The musty sll soaked into Yan Wuxu’s thoughts, making her feel as if she herself were decaying.
This world had utterly abandoned her. Everything was retribution. Even God knew that this child, tornted so much, having lost his healthy body and his useless parents, could not continue living, and so even his life was taken away.
Her two children, one had turned into a pool of blood before birth, the other had only lingered briefly in the world before leaving hurriedly.
"An ill fate befell , why must it befall my babies," Yan Wuxu lifted her face, unable to cry any longer.
That night, Yan Wuxu stood up, she took out the moisturizer Su Ziceng had given her, sat inside the room, and facing the mirror by the bed, ticulously applied it to her face. Then the lipstick; she could feel the brightness returning to her face.
Her dry hair, under the combing of a wooden comb, regained its neatness.
"I want to eat steak," Yan Wuxu said when the guard brought in a steaming hot al.
"So many demands," the guard refused her request without a second thought.
The next day, the sa situation, Yan Wuxu still tidied up, "I want to eat steak."
By the third day, possibly truly annoyed by Yan Wuxu’s persistent requests, he finally procured a steak for her. The fork was made of wood, and the knife used to cut the steak had a rounded edge, already wrapped in soft silver foil.
Yan Wuxu calmly finished the steak, then put away the knife and fork.
When the guard inquired later, Yan Wuxu simply replied, "Keep it for next ti."
The processed knife and fork should have been harmless, the guard grumbled a few words and left.
Another week passed, Yan Wuxu requested steak every night, and she continued to use the sa set of knife and fork. The careless guard didn’t notice that the silver foil wrapped around the knife blade was diminishing, and eventually, it fell off altogether.
The last ti Yan Wuxu ate the steak, the thick grease made the blade glisten. She could now use the knife as a mirror to see her own face.
That night, as usual, the guard brought a steak, but Yan Wuxu didn’t sit up like before; she lay in the dark.
The knife, which she had ground against the floor countless tis, was pressed against her throat, still carrying the scent of butter. She pushed the blade further in, already feeling the instant pain as blood seeped out.
There was nothing left worth lingering for. The despair on Yan Wuxu’s face finally turned into a smile, a smile that could drown her own self (To be continued.
