On the way to Xiang City to retrieve the radio:

"What, afraid I’ll suddenly turn into a zombie and bite you?"

Ling Jing gave a self-deprecating smile.

He glanced sideways at Lu Chen with a faint, eerie look, but Lu Chen remained expressionless and silent.

"You’ve always been this quiet, huh?" Ling Jing couldn’t help but ask, curious.

Lu Chen shot him a cool glance before turning his back to him.

Ling Jing shrugged and sprawled out on the grass, a blade of weed dangling from his lips.

Hah, what a block of ice.

---

During the battle against the undead:

"You keep staring at —don’t tell you’ve fallen for ?" Ling Jing smirked, watching Lu Chen with amusent.

Lu Chen took a sip of water, unfazed, and ignored him.

The reason he kept an eye on Ling Jing was simple: he was worried the latter’s zombie toxin might flare up, leading to uncontrollable actions.

And the reason it fell to him? Among their group, aside from Yun Xiaoxiao, he was the only one who could take Ling Jing in a fight.

Whenever Yun Xiaoxiao wasn’t paired with Ling Jing, it was usually Lu Chen who ended up tead with him.

Seeing Lu Chen brush him off, Ling Jing found it unbearably dull.

He sidled up and nudged Lu Chen with his shoulder.

"Hey, with how uptight you are, I bet you’re still a virgin, huh?"

Cough—

The mont the words left Ling Jing’s mouth, Lu Chen choked on his water.

But his self-control was impeccable—just a light cough, and he steadied himself.

Watching Lu Chen’s usually icy face finally crack, Ling Jing was thoroughly entertained.

"Ha! So I was right?" He grinned, clearly pleased.

anwhile, soone else’s mood had taken a sharp nosedive.

Lu Chen’s expression turned even frostier.

Ling Jing, however, paid no mind and kept dancing on the edge of danger.

He leaned in, tilting Lu Chen’s chin up with a rogue’s smirk.

"Can’t be. With a face like yours, there’s no way won haven’t—"

Before he could finish, Lu Chen swatted his hand away.

Undeterred, Ling Jing chuckled, eyes flicking downward with mock sympathy. "Or is it... that you’ve got... performance issues?"

Lu Chen: !

"Are you done?!"

He glared, a vein faintly pulsing at his temple.

"Oh, so you can get mad?" Ling Jing’s grin widened. "See? Much more lively now. How about a smile next?"

Lu Chen: !!!

If looks could kill, Ling Jing would’ve been dead a thousand tis over.

When Ah Hao turned into a half-zombie, Lei Ming’s companions assud Ling Jing had bitten him, causing the transformation. Tempers flared, and accusations flew at Ling Jing.

Ling Jing walked off to rest alone.

"You didn’t do anything wrong."

A deep, calm voice suddenly spoke up beside him.

Ling Jing paused, turning to see Lu Chen seated against the wall.

After a brief silence, he lazily curved his lips into a smirk.

"What’s this? Worried about ?"

His tone dripped with playful suggestiveness.

Lu Chen rolled his eyes and shut his mouth, probably regretting opening it in the first place.

Ling Jing pressed his lips together, studying Lu Chen for a long mont before sitting down beside him and closing his eyes.

After the flora and fauna mutated, the Base Guard Squad began periodic training expeditions into the mountains. The goal? Strengthen their combat skills and, if luck struck, bond with mutated creatures as allies.

This ti, Lu Chen and Ling Jing led the team, accompanied by five other guards.

The plane landed at the foot of the mountain, and the group trekked upward.

Though dangers lurked along the way, with Lu Chen and Ling Jing as their shields, threats were swiftly neutralized.

Until they stumbled upon a field of mutated poison grass deep in the forest.

The plants were deceptively plain, indistinguishable from ordinary weeds.

But they were razor-sharp and lethally toxic.

Ling Jing, scouting ahead, stepped right into the patch.

In an instant, the seemingly harmless grass lashed out, coiling around his ankle as needle-like blades stabbed into his skin.

He jerked back just in ti—but not before one blade nicked him.

No big deal, he thought. He’d endured far worse. A scratch like this barely registered.

After clearing the poison grass, they settled in a cave for the night.

By midnight, it was Lu Chen’s turn to keep watch.

He sat by the fire, occasionally feeding it more wood.

Then his gaze landed on Ling Jing.

His brow furrowed.

Sothing was off.

Ling Jing was pale to begin with, but now his face had taken on a sickly pallor, his body trembling faintly.

This wasn’t right.

Lu Chen stood and walked over.

By the faint glow of the firelight, he noticed a thin sheen of sweat glistening on Ling Jing's forehead and neck.
