Madam Cui asked in surprise, "What’s going on? What was said?"
"Isn’t she Meng Chaojun’s daughter-in-law? Although she hasn’t married that boy Meng Xinian yet, it’s almost there, so you could say she’s the soon-to-be daughter-in-law, right?"
mander Cui frowned, "Guess what happened? Meng Chaojun asked someone to tell me he wanted to see me about something urgent, but Xiao Song intercepted it. You know I’m busy these days; they’ve all e back from Ke Ku Li, but there are still things to handle there, and arrangements have to be made for people to e over from Ke Ku Li. So Xiao Song pushed any less urgent matters back for me. If I hadn’t happened to ask today, and he hadn’t remembered, I might not have found out about this for another two months."
"There’s such a thing?"
Madam Cui also found it a bit strange.
Given their current relationship with Jiang Xiao, Jiang Xiao could have just reached out or sent a message, and they would have gotten a response.
Why would Meng Chaojun need to go through such a process?
Of course, it’s also because he’s stepped down now and is idle; otherwise, he would have had opportunities to meet with mander Cui.
"Yeah, so don’t you find this Little Firecracker strange? Does she still see us as outsiders?"
After the initial surprise, Madam Cui found his ment amusing.
"I think you’re the strange one. Before, when Xiao Chiang came to me, you insisted she was doing it for Meng Xi’s sake and even specifically called her over to give her a talking-to. Now that she’s not taking any shortcuts with you, you’re calling her weird. What do you want her to do?"
"Times have changed," mander Cui waved his hand. "Besides, it’s just a message; there’s nothing more to it for me."
"Maybe Meng Chaojun didn’t even tell Xiao Chiang about wanting to see you, so Jiang Xiao definitely wouldn’t know."
"That’s reasonable," mander Cui continued, "But I’ve heard that now it’s that Little Firecracker who calls the shots in the Meng Family; that girl is bossy. If they cross her, she’d surely explode."
Though this didn’t sound like a pleasant ment, Madam Cui knew her husband well enough to detect a hint of hidden pride in his tone and expression.
It seemed like even Jiang Xiao’s assertiveness was something he admired.
"Don’t make Xiao Chiang out to be so unreasonable."
Madam Cui couldn’t help but laugh and shake her head.
"So are you going to make time to see Meng Chaojun?"
"If I do, I do. But right now, any time I can cut out is just for ing here to have meals with you."
Madam Cui heard his implication and laughed again.
The old man still claimed not to appreciate Xiao Chiang.
Because of her, he’s even willing to have Meng Chaojun e here to discuss things.
Meng Xinian woke up in the middle of the night.
No one disturbed his sleep.
Even when nurses and doctors came in later, upon seeing him, they all lowered their voices cautiously.
Except for going to the bathroom and moving around a bit, Jiang Xiao mostly sat on the bed acpanying him.
She noticed that as long as she was by his side, he could really sleep soundly.
Whenever Jiang Xiao had free time, she would rest her chin on her palm and gaze at him, admiring his thick eyebrows, his nose, his lips, and chin, finding him more handsome the longer she looked.
Thinking about how she used to believe they were strangers in a past life, only to discover they had connections and exchanged letters, made her feel that destiny is truly wondrous.
She felt like she could never look at him enough.
Initially, she was lying next to him watching him, but noticing he didn’t wake up, she eventually fell asleep alongside him.
