After those words were spoken, everyone’s faces turned rather unpleasant.
Sun Chan started working as a caregiver when she first arrived in the city, doing the most exhausting manual labor. Naturally, no one respected her job, especially people like Wang Guihua who looked down on it.
Even Bai Fanglan had once belittled Sun Chan for working as a caregiver.
No one expected Wang Guihua to blatantly bring it up, making it impossible not to feel disgusted. What exactly does this woman want? Sun Chan felt the content wasn’t bad; being a caregiver isn’t a disgraceful or illegal job.
But Wang Guihua’s tone was indeed sowhat excessive.
Sun Chan lightly said, "I didn’t do it for long before, and in this line of work, there’s significant turnover. I might not be doing it anymore. But I’ll go to the hospital and ask around. See if there’s anyone I know."
"Hmm, speaking of which, you did it quite a while, if you weren’t pregnant it’d be entirely up to you now. It’s such a pity to have to find a nanny instead."
Everyone frowned, and Yang Hongying thought to herself, this mother-in-law has completely lost it, unable to deal with , she’s bullying Sun Chan instead. Didn’t she realize she’s not even Sun Chan’s real mother-in-law? How could she expect to push her around?
Sun Chan laughed, "Are you implying that I’m deliberately not taking care of the old man to be a bad child?"
"No, that’s not what I ant." Wang Guihua wanted to say sothing more.
Gu Zishan interrupted her, "Enough with the nonsense, I’ll find a caregiver! When Mr. Yan was hospitalized, the person who looked after him did quite well, I’ll ask if she can co and help."
Everyone agreed, and Gu Junming said he would cover the expenses, but Gu Zishan refused: "The old man is already on public healthcare; no money is needed. Any extra, we’ll pay ourselves. It’s our fault that none of us knew about his illness."
"How can you bla us?" Wang Guihua said, "The old man was always at the barracks, we never t, how could we know about his condition? It’s just unfortunate he might not see his great-grandchild born. My daughter-in-law isn’t reliable enough to give a grandson."
Yang Hongying hung her head, fiddling with her sleeve, not saying a word.
"Shut up!" Gu Zishan’s anger was uncontrollable, "Are you cursing my father not to live long?"
"I didn’t an anything else, don’t be mad. I was just..."
"Enough, keep quiet, my head is aching!" Gu Zishan impatiently cut her off, looking annoyed. This damn wife of mine! Always causing trouble. Wang Guihua gritted her teeth, thinking to herself, this old man has less respect for by the day, criticizing in front of so many juniors.
Gu Juntao felt somber and said to his wife, "Grandfather was always good to , and I’ll take care of him. We live far away, so I’ll stay here for a few days frequently, and you’ll handle things at ho."
"You’re busy with work, let Yang Hongying co." Wang Guihua said.
"She has to take care of the kids, and there’s still work at ho, she can’t manage it. I’ll go instead."
Listening to her son defending his wife, Wang Guihua felt uncomfortable and quickly said, "But she’s the daughter-in-law, the granddaughter-in-law, what’s wrong with caring for the elderly? What excuse is she making, she’s not Sun Chan, she can’t use pregnancy as a pretext..."
"You’re a daughter-in-law too, why don’t you take care of him yourself!" Gu Zishan shouted.
Startled, Wang Guihua shivered: "How would I know how to take care of him?"
"You don’t know how, yet you ddle? Who do you think you are? A great general giving orders, the most useless person is you, and yet you dare to criticize others!" Gu Zishan was furious.
This woman manages to offend both daughters-in-law with one sentence. She simply must assert her presence; when will this nopause end? If it continues, even I will go mad! It’s utterly infuriating!
Yang Hongying remained expressionless, having long since stopped caring about what her mother-in-law said.
Sun Chan didn’t bother listening to her words, thinking to herself that since she couldn’t help, she’d buy so health supplents or sothing. The old man seed so healthy before, how did he suddenly beco so frail?
Gu Junming shot a cold look at Wang Guihua. Then he took his wife’s hand: "Let’s head back. Starting tomorrow, we’ll take turns visiting Grandpa. Let’s try to improve his mood. Don’t ntion his illness, let him feel happier."
"Let’s go too. Buy so large bones; make so bone broth." Gu Juntao said.
Gu Junming said, "We’ll cook those at our place; our gas is free." That’s a perk of having a military background; for Gu Juntao’s household, gas costs thirty cents per unit. So it’s better to cook at his place.
The two discussed how to schedule care rotation, and then they left together.
Sun Chan and Yang Hongying discussed how to make the broth, not ntioning Wang Guihua’s matters.
After both sons and their wives left, Gu Zishan and his wife had a fierce argunt.
Wang Guihua accused Gu Zishan of being aggressive and not respecting her.
Gu Zishan then unreservedly scolded Wang Guihua: "You want respect? Look at yourself! What does Sun Chan’s job have to do with you? What do you an by claiming she’s using excuses not to care for the elderly? Is her pregnancy fake? You’re a daughter-in-law too, when have you ever cared for my father?"
Wang Guihua was furious: "Why are you always fighting with ? I’m also concerned about Dad, yet you treat this way? If you don’t respect , do you expect to care for you? Do you think you’ll never grow old?"
"You think I’d ask you to care for ? What can you do? Besides causing trouble, what else can you do?" Gu Zishan sneered: "My greatest mistake in life was marrying you! How could I have listened to others, divorced my ex-wife, and ended up with a woman like you! That’s my biggest punishnt!"
Wang Guihua was so angry her chest hurt as she clutched her chest: "If you had any self-esteem, you wouldn’t have co to back then! Why say this now? I truly despise you; you’re nothing but a bastard!"
"I am a bastard! Otherwise, how could I have chosen you? I accept it, but I beg you to shut that mouth of yours! Stop yamring nonsense to my sons and daughters-in-law, it’s utterly embarrassing! I have nothing more to say, you’re simply a madwoman!" He concluded and walked off.
This left Wang Guihua hysterically venting her anger downstairs. The maid hid in the corner, silent for fear of being caught and scolded.
Gu Zishan returned upstairs, in a terrible mood.
He sat at the desk in the study and for a long ti didn’t speak, pulling out a notebook with a photo inside, not of Wang Guihua, but of a young woman with braids in her twenties, smiling brightly. It was his ex-wife.
