The crowd was in an uproar.

Everyone felt there was a problem as soon as these words were spoken.

But it was hard to speak out against it.

"Grandparents can indeed arrange a marriage for their granddaughter, but it has to be with Gu Ruhai’s consent. If Gu Ruhai doesn’t agree, it makes no sense to bypass him."

"Indeed, the parents are still alive; how can grandparents make decisions? Let alone the second uncle and aunt; what does it have to do with them?"

"You don’t know, that Gu Rushan, the second uncle, is a well-known figure in Gu Family Village. They even have a college student in the family."

"Even if they’re the parents of a college student, they can’t arrange a marriage for their niece over the heads of her own parents."

"Exactly! Who knows what’s really going on here."

Gu Xiaoqing continued, "Listen everyone, we are living in a new era, not the old society. This isn’t a ti when elders dictate marriages. Isn’t the new society about freedom to love? Besides, my parents don’t even know when my sister supposedly got a husband, let alone one as old as my dad.

Is this our family deceiving soone into marriage, or is it your family dreaming up wild sches?"

This was such a solid argunt that even Granny Feng couldn’t argue back.

Granny Feng noticed the increasingly hostile glances from people around and felt uneasy; is the Gu family bullying her?

The old lady wasn’t convinced today and thought she couldn’t be outdone by a young girl.

Pointing at Gu Xiaoqing, she said, "You little girl, stay out of this. This has nothing to do with you. I’ll talk things over with your parents."

Gu Xiaoqing stepped aside to let Gu Ruhai and Li Xuei step in.

She couldn’t represent her parents; it couldn’t be helped.

Li Xuei stepped forward and said, "This is our first ti eting in town; I’ve never t you or your son before. Your causing a scene like this today is sothing we’ll just pretend didn’t happen. Take your son back, and settle things with whoever you need to. It doesn’t concern us. We will make decisions about our daughter’s marriage, not anyone else."

This was a complete rejection of Granny Feng.

Seeing Li Xuei’s firm stance, Granny Feng was about to throw herself onto the ground, mouth wide open, preparing to wail. But when she saw Gu Xiaoqing approaching with a basin, she imdiately restrained her tantrum.

She might be tough and able to make a scene, but she encountered soone tougher. Despite her young age, Gu Xiaoqing’s tactics completely subdued Granny Feng.

It’s one thing to be shaless, but being doused with cold water is unpleasant.

Even in the heat of sumr, being splashed with basin after basin of greasy dishwater leaves you sticky all over, with stinging eyes and nose.

It’s an unpleasant experience.

She could only say, "I don’t care. This was agreed upon by Mr. and Mrs. Gu in your family, so it’s a Gu Family matter, not ours. But we are set on marrying this bride."

Now she was being shaless.

Li Xuei, infuriated, pointed at Granny Feng and said, "Fine, since you say you don’t care, I’ll say this now—I won’t care either. The marriage you agreed upon with Mr. and Mrs. Gu? Let your son go marry Mr. and Mrs. Gu then; there’s no reason to co to us for the bride."

The crowd erupted into laughter, their buzzing mirth and mocking voices leaving Feng Yuejin wishing he could disappear.

He tugged at Granny Feng’s sleeve and whispered, "Mom, let’s go. Stop embarrassing yourself here; I still have to live in this world."

Granny Feng shot a glare, shook her sleeve, and said, "Just you wait! This isn’t over. If you don’t give an explanation, don’t expect to live in peace."

She stord off, dragging Feng Yuejin with her.

The crowd dispersed; the good show was over, and everyone went back to their own business.

But gossip started spreading through the villages.

The general story being that grandparents in Gu Family Village arranged a marriage for their granddaughter without the parents knowing, giving her to an older, la man who could be her father. People wondered how grandparents could be so heartless if they were indeed her real grandparents.

So relatives of the Gu Family Village spread rumors that Mrs. Gu had pretended to be sick a few days ago, demanding Gu Ruhai have his older daughter marry a la man to help Gu Xiaocheng get a job, assuming this was the la man in question.

The news spread like wildfire to all nearby villages.

It was so detailed and vivid, especially since many witnesses had seen and heard Granny Feng, and when combined with the events of Gu Family Village, it was hard not to believe.

Li Xuei and Gu Ruhai angrily packed up their stall and headed ho.

All along the way, Li Xuei kept berating Gu Ruhai.

She had nowhere to vent her frustration.

"Look at the kind of people in your family. Arranging a marriage for our granddaughter behind the parents’ back—is this sothing people do? How do you all end up like this?"

Li Xuei was furious.

"I really didn’t know about this. Don’t worry, I won’t let Xiao Ying suffer. No matter what, I won’t let the second brother have his way. Once we let this happen, more will follow. I didn’t have daughters to let their son use them as stepping stones."

Gu Ruhai was genuinely angry, dark clouds hovering over his face.

This ti, Gu Ruhai was truly resentful inside.

He knew Mrs. Gu was oblivious, but how could Mr. Gu also act like this? Gu Ruhai couldn’t understand what his parents thought of him. Was he really adopted?

It was the first ti Gu Ruhai began to doubt his own background.

"I think those two old-tirs in your family would rather skin us alive, crush our bones to sell the marrow just to patch things up for Gu Xiaocheng.

Listen closely, Gu Ruhai: if you ever hesitate or have any thoughts about this, I will divorce you imdiately. I’ll take the kids and leave; I won’t let them be ruined by your Gu family." Li Xuei gave her final ultimatum.

Gu Ruhai forced a bitter smile. What more could he think?

Did he want to be isolated?

"Darling, don’t worry. I know what I can and can’t do. I absolutely won’t let the children suffer. I’ll protect you and the kids. Otherwise, what kind of man am I? If bullied by my own brother to this extent and if I don’t speak up, allowing them to get their way, then I might as well end everything and not bring disgrace to my parents."

Gu Ruhai said with steely determination, without a hint of hesitation, truly wounded in his heart.

Li Xuei nodded, pondered for a mont, and said, "Husband, I think Xiaoqing’s idea is right. We should plan to leave, move to the city, get far away from here, so they can’t keep cutting us down whenever sothing happens. I really can’t endure your parents’ ruthless exploitations any longer."

Gu Ruhai nodded solemnly.

Let’s go then.

It’s better to leave cleanly. (To be continued. If you like this work, please visit Qidian (qidian) to vote for recomndations and monthly tickets. Your support is my greatest motivation. Mobile users, please read on m.qidian.)
