Chapter 246: The 246th being furious

The entire Mo family, young and old, mobilized and spent several days digging out quite a few loaches.

Xuexue dried them all, and there were several large buckets. Madam Xie’s heart, which had been in her throat, finally settled down. They had a supply of loaches for the restaurant, and that made her feel at ease.

The villagers, knowing that they had dug up so many loaches, were all asking around. Madam Xie just smiled and didn’t answer. Xuexue had advised her that they should wait a while longer, until they had earned enough silver and had no worries about food and clothing before they shared the news.

Madam Xie thought so, too. The loaches were becoming fewer and fewer, and in a few days, as spring approached, the rains would beco more frequent, leaving them with even fewer opportunities to dig, so she agreed.

Having resolved the loach issue, Madam Xie went to check on the garlic seedlings in the field to see how they were growing and whether there were any weeds, as she hadn’t been to the field for several days because of the loach business.

In the yard, Big Bull was splitting wood and asked Xuexue, “Wife, are we going to town again tomorrow?”

“Yes?” Xuexue picked up the wood Big Bull had split, neatly arranging and tying it into bundles that could easily be carried to the kitchen when needed.

“We’ve made an arrangent with Shopkeeper Fan to deliver once every seven days, and tomorrow is the seventh day.”

“Oh!”

They were talking when Madam Xie returned, her face grim and furious.

“Clang!” Without saying a word, as soon as she entered the door, she threw the farming tool, which she usually treasured, into the corner of the wall and sat down on a small stool to sulk.

Big Bull and Xuexue were extrely surprised. Normally, Madam Xie was very mild-mannered and spoke softly. What could have made her so explosive today?

“Mother, what’s wrong?” Xuexue stopped tying the wood and turned to ask.

“It’s too much,” Madam Xie huffed in anger.

Big Bull, in his simple-minded manner, said, “Big sister, who has bullied you? I’ll take care of them for you.”

“Who else but the Mo family!” Madam Xie’s eyes were wet with tears.

“They bullied you again?” Xuexue suspected another beating from Old Lady Mo and hurried to Madam Xie’s side, looking her over, “Mother, where are you hurt?”

Madam Xie, visibly annoyed, pushed away Xuexue’s probing hands and said in a muffled voice, “Aiyo! No, they didn’t hit .”

“Oh!” Xuexue breathed a sigh of relief, “That’s good then.”

“Good? They’ve ruined our garlic seedlings beyond recognition!” Madam Xie was furious. They had all worked so hard to grow those seedlings. Just picking out the stones had taken several days, not to ntion the careful nurturing after planting the garlic.

“What?” Xuexue stood up abruptly, eyes wide with shock, “They went to our field?”

“Yes. They’ve cut down quite a few of the seedlings.” Madam Xie was so upset, tears started falling, “Auntie Sun, that Seductress Fox, even said if she couldn’t eat all, she’d take them ho to feed the chickens, not leaving any for us.”

“That’s outrageous.” On hearing this, Xuexue beca enraged and stord out.

“Xuexue, where are you going?” Madam Xie, wiping her tears, called out loudly.

“I’m off to settle the score with that fox,” Xuexue’s voice was fiery as it carried back to her.

“Aiyo, Wei!” Fearing Xuexue would be at a disadvantage, Madam Xie turned and shoved Big Bull, saying, “You silly boy, what are you standing around for? Hurry up and follow Xuexue. Don’t let her get hurt.”

“Oh!”

Big Bull snapped to his senses and quickly ran off after Xuexue.

“Wife, wife, wait for .”

Xuexue was running ahead and suddenly stopped, turning a corner and running in another direction.
