Chapter 23: Chapter 23 Apple Tree Chapter 23: Chapter 23 Apple Tree “Ah.” i ngchen’s little face visibly fell, his disappointnt was rather amusing, “Sister is just teasing you. We’re making money every day now, so there’s no need to worry. Whatever you want to eat, we’ll buy.”
i ngchen took her words seriously, but when it actually ca ti to buy, i ngzhen started to feel a headache coming on.
Children love snacks, but mostly sweet treats, and she wasn’t a real child, so she couldn’t let her brother buy sweets as he pleased.
As i ngzhen put the sweets he had taken back one by one, i ngchen complained sowhat angrily, “Sister is a liar, you said we could take whatever we wanted.”
“But I didn’t know everything you wanted to eat was candy. Kids can’t eat so much sugar; it’ll make them dumb. Do you want to be a dumb little brother? Sister likes you smart.”
i ngzhen’s words had him at a loss. i ngchen wanted to argue, but he opened his mouth and couldn’t find any words to counter her claim.
That’s what happens from a lack of education, if he’d even been to kindergarten he wouldn’t be so easily stumped.
i ngchen went from angry to conflicted; his sister was more important than candy, but candy also held a significant place in his heart.
i ngzhen found the situation sowhat amusing. She hadn’t actually removed all the sweets from the shopping cart: “Look, you picked too much candy, so I put so back. But I’ve left so for you. However, you have to promise your sister that you won’t eat too much candy, just one piece a day, deal?”
i ngchen’s gloom turned to a smile as he thanked her profusely, “Thank you, Sister. You’re the best.”
The little episode ca to a quick end, and after paying, the two left the supermarket.
i ngchen was able to ride in the cart on the way there, but he had to walk back on his own.
Luckily, i ngchen wasn’t fussy and diligently helped with whatever he could handle, just like in the morning when they sold vegetables. Even though he couldn’t really pull the vegetables, he tried his hardest to help her, and now he was helping her pull the goods they bought from the supermarket.
Back ho, they stored everything in the kitchen. Seeing the house full again gave i ngzhen a sense of reassurance. A ho should be filled to the brim anyway.
Just as they had finished putting things away, soone knocked on the door. Every day, it seed, soone was looking for them.
“Who is it?”
“It’s , Auntie.”
i ngzhen hurriedly went to open the door, “Auntie, why are you coming over at this ti?”
i Yinan explained after entering, “You two are back. Your little aunt saw you at the supermarket and told about it just now when I bumped into her, so I ca to see how you were doing and to help you put things away.”
i ngzhen was surprised, “Ah, I didn’t see little Aunt.”
i Yinan didn’t mind. Jiang Xiui had insinuated that the child was ill-mannered for not greeting an elder, which almost infuriated her. However, she knew what her niece and nephew were like; if they hadn’t greeted their aunt, they must have not seen her. After a brief argunt, i Yinan left, still miffed from the quarrel and thought since they had bought things, she might as well co over to check on them, “If you didn’t see her, you didn’t see her. It’s not like she’s soone that important.”
But as soon as she said it, she felt it was inappropriate and added quickly, “Still, you should greet people you et on the road in the future. We need to have basic manners.”
i ngzhen understood upon hearing this; the two had clashed. With her little aunt and big aunt at odds, it certainly wouldn’t end well, and her aunt might even leave in anger. She found herself rather pleased about the little aunt getting upset; she couldn’t help being a bit an.
“What did you buy just now? Was it heavy? You should have asked to go with you so I could help you carry it back.”
“There’s no need, Auntie. I took the cart, and I just brought back so grains and oil, nothing too heavy.”
i Yinan saw the unopened goods as soon as she entered the kitchen, clearly just bought, and sighed, “It seems you two are really set on cooking at ho now.”
“Yes, we’ve been cooking at ho these last few days.”
“The fault is mine for being so busy at work lately, otherwise I could have co ho to cook for you at midday.”
“There’s no need, Auntie. I cook decently, and Chenchen isn’t picky. We have eggs, at, and vegetables every day. As long as we’re getting nutrition, it’s good enough.”
i Yinan had nothing much to say after that, “Then co over to my place this weekend. I’ll improve your als a bit, and you’re not allowed to refuse.”
That actually sounded good; so i ngzhen agreed, “Okay, I’ll bring Chenchen over on the weekend.”
i Yinan was there just to check in, and having done so, it was ti to head ho. Just as she was about to leave, she noticed the cart in the yard and asked casually, “Where did this co from?”
“A classmate left it at my house.”
“Male or female classmate?” i Yinan asked sharply and sensitively.
i ngzhen was taken aback, then rembered her age, at 17, it was indeed a ti for misunderstandings. She quickly explained, “A female classmate. They use it for transporting goods when selling vegetables. It’s just here temporarily.”
Hearing it was a female classmate, i Yinan didn’t probe further. She reminded them to lock their doors and be careful before leaving.
i ngzhen didn’t give it much thought. After she and her brother washed up, they went to their rooms.
She had moved i ngchen’s small bed from their parents’ room to her own. Of course, she did it while i ngchen was asleep, using the space to bring it up easily. Luckily, his bed was just a small one, which she could move without the space, but using the space saved her a lot of effort.
For now, i ngchen had set up camp in her room, but he showed no discomfort. He ate and slept well, going to bed and waking up on schedule; everything was perfect.
Of course, this was all after drinking the Spiritual Spring Water. Before that, he was like any other kid, hating to go to bed and hating to get up, endlessly vexing.
After i ngchen’s sleep routine normalized, the one who benefited the most was i ngzhen. As soon as her brother slept, she lay down, then her consciousness entered the space and began her hard labor.
A day had gone by since she planted the apple seedlings. When i ngzhen entered the space again, lo and behold, the apple tree was laden with fruit.
i ngzhen was overjoyed, not only because the apple tree had borne fruit but also because it hadn’t harvested automatically. She had been worrying about that. Surely, she couldn’t keep planting and then harvesting the apple tree. Thankfully, the space was reliable, saving her the hassle.
With a thought, an apple from the tree appeared steadily in her hand. The apple was large and brightly colored, tempting just by the look of it.
She didn’t even consider washing it and wiped it on her clothes before biting into it.
With a ‘crunch’, she bit off a piece of the apple. Tart, sweet, and crisp, the flavor was many tis better than any apple she had eaten before.
After she had devoured an entire apple, her stomach was full. And where she had picked from before, a new apple had already grown back.
