30: Chapter 20 The Kitten 30: Chapter 20 The Kitten The specific distribution quotas were calculated, and each person would receive about 500 grams of gold, with Gu Yanzhi’s family getting 450 grams of gold per person.

Because most of the gold was still in Gu Yanzhi’s hands, and they planned to do the actual division later, the three kilograms of gold present were entrusted to Gu Yanzhi’s family by everyone, agreeing to divide it after returning.

Gu Yanzhi didn’t refuse, and in front of everyone, put all the gold and the remaining jewelry into the backpack carried by Song Zhao.

Taking advantage of the others’ distraction, he then transferred the gold into his space, effectively lightening Song Zhao’s load.

Jewelry could potentially level up the space when stuffed into it, causing the space to be unusable for a certain period.

Unable to transfer it, he had no choice but to carry it himself.

The materials on the top floor were not plentiful.

The main items were found by Gu Yanzhi in the storage room and Sister Li’s executive office, which held so practical goods.

The remaining rooms yielded little more than so discarded papers and a few snacks.

Before dividing the “spoils,” everyone had already searched the top floor thoroughly.

They decided to go downstairs and search directly.

“How about this table and such?

Should I chop it into lumber first?” asked Gu Yanlin.

“I can remodel it into a handcart; it can carry things back and is easier to push,” he suggested.

“But I need so tools; I’m not sure if we’ll be able to find any later.”

Uncle Zhuang entered and saw all these solid wood items, but at that mont, everyone’s attention was on the jewelry, his included.

Now that they were to continue searching below, it wasn’t practical to carry such large items downstairs.

Having been a carpenter in his youth, with the right tools, it would not be too much effort for him to remodel them.

Once finished, it would be convenient for transport and also provide storage space.

“Uncle Zhuang, do you think these tools are enough?” asked Song Zhao, who went out and brought back a toolbox from the storage room for Uncle Zhuang.

It seed that the tools were extensively equipped for property maintenance, and the toolbox had everything Uncle Zhuang needed, even the nails he was most likely to use during the remodeling.

There were two large boxes of nails, more than enough for his use.

Leaving Uncle Zhuang’s family of three and Gu Yanlin to assist him, the others went downstairs.

Before leaving, Zhong Junfeng and Yin ng took a few pennants off the walls, along with a thin blanket, likely used by the staff for napping.

The two of them already had scarce resources, depending entirely on donations from the group to barely keep warm.

Now seeing these items that could provide warmth, even though they were thin, small, and of poor quality, they took everything, since accumulating even a little could prove useful.

Descending the stairs, everyone decided to search each floor in the sa groups they were in, given that the building premises were not extensive and could be quickly searched.

This thod could improve efficiency.

On the top floor, Uncle Zhuang dismantled the table quickly with an axe, finding it easy to disassemble once he grasped the know-how of the combined furniture.

After taking apart the rest of the furniture, Uncle Zhuang began instructing Gu Yanlin and Zhuang Nanyang on the shape and size of wood pieces he needed.

Once he saw they understood and had tested chopping for him, he let them take turns chopping wood by the side.

Uncle Zhuang, using the available tools, began assembling, while Aunt Zhuang assisted by handing him tools.

It had to be said that the couple indeed worked well together; almost as soon as Uncle Zhuang extended his hand, Aunt Zhuang knew what he needed.

Downstairs, Gu Yanzhi arrived at the 13th floor, where the entire floor belonged to one company.

The entrance door was locked, and Gu Yanzhi, along with Song Zhao, tried kicking it a couple of tis without success.

He found a baseball bat in the space and smashed it harshly against the glass door.

After a few blows, the glass shattered crisply.

Aiming at the cracking point in the glass, he struck down hard again, shattering it completely.

As the glass broke, Gu Yanzhi and Song Zhao thought they could vaguely sll sothing awful.

They carefully stepped over the glass shards and entered the office.

The money tree by the door had died from neglect and the harsh cold.

As they walked deeper inside, they were t by a strong scent of rot, causing both of them to frown.

It was a pet company.

Passing the reception area and entering the office space, all workstations were grouped together, leaving a large space in the middle.

Pet snacks, toys, and other daily necessities were displayed on the wall shelves on both sides.

Transparent sliding glass in the front offered a clear view inside.

The rotten sll ca from here—on the floor, in the cat nests, and on the climbing fras were the small silhouettes of several kittens, accompanied by the corpses of frozen white maggots.

The bodies of the kittens had decayed to the point where one could no longer recognize their original appearance, but their frail, blurry shapes indicated that they had suffered imnse starvation before death.

The entire room was filled with scratches and bite marks from the kittens.

In one of the climbing fras, the wood had been chewed into a large hole, and scattered cotton and torn cloth indicated the extre hunger of the kittens, who had begun gnawing at nearby items in a desperate bid for survival.

Seeing this scene almost brought Gu Yanzhi to tears.

Although she didn’t have pets herself, she couldn’t resist the charm of these adorable animals.

A decade of apocalypse had hardened her heart to people, but her compassion for small animals remained.

Thinking of their pain before they died, Gu Yanzhi felt imnse sorrow.

Sorrowful as she was, there was still work to be done.

With Song Zhao’s comfort, Gu Yanzhi collected her emotions and stored the shelves in the space.

She noticed the iron shelves were pitted and had white scratch marks on them.

Despite the abundance of food inside the room, the kittens hadn’t been able to reach it and had starved to death.

Having stored the shelves, they moved further in and found another door, leading to a small storage room.

More display shelves lined the room, while the four corners were piled with plenty of purified water and cat litter.

Gu Yanzhi took the shelves into the space, and then she and Song Zhao moved the frozen cornered purified water and cat litter out to the entrance, trip by trip.

After completing this, the two of them road around the office, not leaving a single drawer unchecked.

The office mostly had cat snacks and toys, with nearly every workstation housing a cat teaser stick.

The most valuable thing they found amounted to just a few bags of small snacks discovered at the reception.

They stored the snacks into a bag found at the front desk and placed them together with the cat litter and purified water at the entrance.
