Children under 12 received half the resources of adults.
Babies under the age of two only got a third of the adult portion, but considering they were still breastfeeding, an additional can of milk powder was added, available once a month.
As it was the first ti registering for resources, the governnt also provided free sacks to consolidate all items.
In future visits, everyone had to bring their own containers.
After loading their resources onto hand carts, everyone followed the signs out.
At the exit, a worker stood handing out two flyers to every group that passed.
Gu Yanzhi, at the front of the group, took the flyers, glanced at them quickly—one was a labor recruitnt notice, and the other was about constructing a shelter.
She didn’t read them closely but passed them around for everyone to see.
Outside, the line was still out of sight.
A group of soldiers erged from the second-floor doorway, escorting a man who had caused trouble at the registration hall earlier.
Gu Yanzhi heard people coming out behind them discussing; it seed the man was a Class-A fugitive who had been on the run for over 20 years and was caught during the recent census.
Everyone was comnting on how the “nets of heaven are vast but let nothing through.”
However, this didn’t concern them much, and they moved on, pulling their resources towards ho.
On their way back, Yin ng whispered to Zhong Junfeng, “Do you think the person we found could also be a fugitive?
His injuries seed severe, like he’s made so enemies.”
“It doesn’t seem like it; he doesn’t look like a bad guy,” Zhong Junfeng replied after pondering the stranger’s appearance.
He exuded an air of righteousness, more like a soldier than a fugitive.
“I’m a bit scared.
Can we stop looking after him?” Yin ng continued in a low voice, worrying they might be harboring a fugitive without knowing, endangering everyone in their building, especially those caring for him closely.
“Let’s not jump to conclusions.
We’ll check again when we get back.
If he’s still unconscious, we’ll discuss it with everyone,” Zhong Junfeng reassured her, stroking her head.
Her concerns weren’t unfounded.
After arriving ho, everyone gathered on the 14th floor in the room where the injured man was found.
They held a brief eting to discuss the flyers handed out by the governnt workers.
They dismissed the flyer about the shelter imdiately; their current living situation was satisfactory, and the neighborhood relations were harmonious, with mutual help amongst residents.
Interest in the shelter was low.
The recruitnt flyer was passed around again, its information detailed.
There were two types of jobs available: lumberjacking involved cutting trees around City C into appropriately sized logs, with wages including lunch, dinner, and 30% of the lumber produced.
The other was ice carving, which also involved retrieving resources from beneath the ice.
The pay was the sa in terms of als, but 50% of the resources collected could be kept by the Ice Carving Team.
The Ice Carving Team seed to have a tougher job.
Opening an area could take more than a couple of days, and seeing returns took longer with higher risks.
The payoff, dependent entirely on luck, could lead to striking it rich overnight.
Due to the resource distribution system, ice carvers couldn’t leave the team until all resources were collected unless the whole team or a replacent withdrew.
Compared to the logging job, ice carving offered potentially higher but less consistent earnings.
Loggers had to commute long distances to City C daily, but the workforce was flexible; workers could choose not to show up after a day’s work.
Additionally, those not participating in the recruitnt could exchange resources they had collected at governnt-designated points for necessary items.
Gu Yanzhi imdiately declared her non-participation, and Song Zhao followed suit.
Gu Yanlin hesitated, wanting to see what the others would decide.
“I think I’ll join the Ice Carving Team,” Xiao Lin expressed first after so thought.
Although riskier, the potential high returns were appealing.
With enough heating materials at ho from yesterday’s resource gathering, he was willing to take the risk and resort to logging if necessary.
“I want to join the Ice Carving Team too,” Xiao Zhong quickly added.
Since everyone’s ho resources were roughly the sa, they all decided to try their luck with the ice team, luckily having enough supplies to afford this choice.
Gu Yanlin, following the majority, also opted for ice carving.
With everyone agreeing on the ice carving, and the flyer stipulating a team size of no fewer than ten and no more than fifteen mbers, they ford a team, fitting just right with thirteen people.
After the discussion, everyone was ready to head ho when Zhong Junfeng posed a lingering question.
“Uncle Zhang, what should we do about the man we found yesterday?” Zhong Junfeng hastily added, “I’m a bit worried he might be a fugitive.
His severe injuries and sudden appearance on the streets make it hard not to suspect him of wrongdoing.”
“It’s not impossible,” Uncle Zhang contemplated.
“Let
go to the district governnt and see if they can verify his identity quickly.
Before the governnt workers arrive, let’s minimize contact with him.
Xiao Zhong and Xiao Yin, you’re both professionals in caring for the injured, so we might still need your help.”
“Don’t visit too frequently; just check on him every two to three hours.
I’ll organize a schedule.
Three people per shift.
When you co, bring the assigned personnel.
Does that work?”
Hearing Uncle Zhang’s plan, Zhong Junfeng and Yin ng felt it was manageable.
Having more people present provided safety.
Uncle Zhang asked for further opinions, and with no objections, everyone agreed to his suggestion.
If the unknown man turned out to be a criminal, making Zhong Junfeng and Yin ng pay with their lives, it would be a lifelong regret for everyone.
But before they could implent any asures, a loud “bang” ca from the bedroom, sounding like soone had kicked sothing.
Everyone hurried to the bedroom doorway, where the man they had found yesterday had accidentally kicked a stool and fallen.
Gu Yanlin stepped forward, helped the man up, and laid him on the thick blankets spread on the floor.
The 14th floor apartnt was unrenovated, maintaining all original features without extra beds.
They had only several layers of blankets on the cent floor and a few thin quilts for the man.
Having everyone around and Gu Yanlin just helping him, Zhong Junfeng wasn’t as scared anymore and began checking on the man.
“Who are you guys, and where am I?” the man asked after a pause, his voice hoarse from not having had water in a long ti.
