Chapter 498: Chapter 493: Wolf’s Heart and Dog’s Lungs
“Those old fogies would snatch anything they can lay their hands on! I’ve seen shaless people, but you guys take the cake. Have you never seen stuff before? Even vying for so darn candlesticks!”
Having his own sister call him out so directly, Yang Gangqiang’s face was red-hot with both sha and fury.
He turned his head and glowered at his wife fiercely, but before he could open his mouth, she bellowed at him, “What are you glaring at? Why are you standing there like a dope? Are you a block of wood, letting this wretched girl insult us? Why aren’t you smacking her already? She’s asking for it…”
Yang’s sister-in-law didn’t finish her tirade when suddenly there was a “BANG”—Yang Dan lifted a shovel and brought it crashing down on the small table they were eating from, sending plates and bowls clattering non-stop onto the cent floor below, followed by the cacophony of shattering ceramics and splashing gravy, which scared Yang Bo and his brother enough to quickly retreat into a corner, silently hugging the wall.
Yang’s sister-in-law, startled, jumped to her feet, and on seeing her family’s dining table cracked open, leaving the place in complete disarray, she let out a “wail” and was about to pounce on Yang Dan in a fight for her life.
Overco with rage, Yang Dan swung the shovel in her hand, aiming it at her sister-in-law.
Under the light, Yang Gangqiang saw the shiny blade of the shovel and felt his heart lurch. He quickly grabbed his wife and dodged backward, as the sharp edge of the shovel blade whist whistled past them.
Yang Gangqiang felt a cold sweat on his back and bellowed at Yang Dan, “Are you insane?”
“I’m insane because you drove
to it!”
With that, she raised the shovel and roared at her sister-in-law, “You want to fight? Co on, I’ll shovel you to death if I have to. An eye for an eye. That’d be way better than enduring your shaless crap!”
It was then that Yang’s sister-in-law realized Yang Dan was dead serious, and she turned ghostly pale, clinging to Yang Gangqiang without daring to make a move.
Just then, three people walked in through the front door. They too had heard Yang Dan’s furious roar just as they entered. Yang’s father stumbled, nearly falling, but was steadied by the brigade secretary beside him.
“Second brother…”
The brigade secretary also had the surna Yang and was related to them, though his branch had split off five generations back, so they weren’t close.
“Jiansheng, never mind , go, stop Dan Dan…”
As they spoke, Yang Yan had already stepped into the kitchen.
“Ya-Yang Yan, you—you quickly take the shovel away from Dan’s hands.”
Yang Gangqiang, shaken and stuttering, called out to her as soon as he saw her. He was frightened by Yang Dan’s statent, “An eye for an eye.”
“Yeah, yeah, take it away. She’s a lunatic. Hurry up and take it!”
Yang Yan was already quite scared herself, and she wanted to snatch the shovel from Yang Dan’s hands, but her sister-in-law’s words made her upset.
She lowered her raised hand, glaring at Yang’s sister-in-law, “Who are you calling a lunatic? You’re the lunatic. Your whole family are lunatics!”
She knew in her heart that today, she and her sister had completely burned bridges with her older brother’s family. With things having co to this point, she might as well get everything off her chest.
Pointing at Yang’s sister-in-law, Yang Yan continued, “Every ti I co back, you send your son over. If I bring cookies or canned goods for mom and dad, he takes them. If I bring at, you snatch away most of it. Fine, you snatch, but then you go around the village snidely saying how the older niece never thinks to bring anything for her nephew when she visits her parents’ ho, only thinking about taking. What have I taken? Am I as shaless as you, always quick to snatch anything mom and dad get for their ho?”
Scolding her again?
Do these younger sisters-in-law really want to rebel?
Especially when she saw the village party secretary’s uncle from her own extended family follow in from behind, she hurriedly defended, “What stealing? How is it stealing when a son takes sothing from his own elderly? Shouldn’t grandparents have nice things to give to their grandchild? Uncle, don’t you agree?”
“Bullshit!”
Yang Yan had summoned Secretary Yang from ho, and on the way over, she had given him the gist of the situation. He held Yang Gangqiang and his wife in very low esteem.
But to tell the truth, in the countryside such incidents were not uncommon; it’s just that most of the ti the elderly who were wronged would just swallow their grievances and keep silent. Even though he was the village party secretary, without the victims speaking up, he couldn’t very well ddle in the family affairs of others, could he?
However, if soone actively sought his help, then he could not stand by, especially since this was his own kin.
“Yan, put the shovel down first,” he said.
Yang Yan quickly added, “Put it down. Is it worth throwing away your life over soone so shaless?”
After she spoke, she pointed at Yang Gangqiang, “You know that dad has osteophyte growth in his legs, right? He’s been having difficulty walking these past two years; if you’re not blind, you can see that, right? The electric tricycle Dan Dan bought for dad has always been at your place—you dare say you didn’t know? Even if you’re not ho during the day, you must see that there’s an extra thing in the yard when you return at night, right?”
Yang Gangqiang’s face flushed red, and he kept his head down, silent.
Yang Gangqiang’s wife wanted to argue and yell, but when she raised her head and t Secretary Yang’s stern face and sharp gaze, she didn’t dare to make a sound.
Yang Yan then pointed to their kitchen’s electric rice cooker and soy milk maker, saying to Secretary Yang, “Uncle, look, Dan Dan worked part-ti while studying, saved wherever she could to buy so appliances for mom and dad, hoping to make cooking easier for them and to let them eat better. But within a month, they were moved to his house.”
After speaking, she pointed to the bright light fixture above, “They didn’t even spare the lights. Yang Bo, since the day you were born, you’ve been living with your grandma, and she took care of you through the good and the bad until you started school and moved back to your own ho. She saved the best food for you, not willing to eat it herself, sparing you to the bone, and in the end, all she got was an ingrate! When you were removing the light fixture, didn’t you think about how your grandma’s poor eyesight ans she needs bright light to see clearly?”
Yang Bo cowered in the corner, head down, silent, while Yang Dan cursed, “Heartless and ungrateful wretch, everything is set by your mother, but you’re fifteen, not five. Don’t you have any ability to distinguish right from wrong? From now on, don’t you dare step foot in your grandma’s house—if you do, I’ll break your legs!”
After speaking, Yang Dan set the raised shovel down but didn’t let go, just propped it in front of her, her eyes coldly on her older brother and his wife.
Secretary Yang then looked at Yang Gangqiang and asked, “Gangqiang, do you know your mother has fallen and injured her leg?”
Yang Gangqiang was taken aback, then his dark face seed redder, and in a halting voice he said, “I… I was working at the construction site during the day…”
“So you didn’t know,” Secretary Yang said, shaking his head slightly, “And you’re not looking at your wife; it’s your parents, not hers. She might have the heart to mistreat them or watch them die of illness or hunger, but could you?”
“Hey, Uncle, what are you talking about? I never…”
“Shut up!”
Secretary Yang didn’t wait for Yang Gangqiang’s wife to finish her sentence before he cut her off harshly, “You seized the electric tricycle that the girl bought with her savings, making your father endure the pain and struggle with the tricycle for work. If that’s not mistreatnt, then what do you call it?”
