Chapter 74: Chapter 74 Dividing the Family (Part 3)
“No way, I won’t agree.”
Xie Changgen’s wife suddenly looked up, her eyes red, and stared at him. “I don’t want to separate the family.”
“Get over it, you don’t have the final say in this house. Don’t you just miss wielding that little bit of authority? Anyway, you like my elder brother, and you care more about his two grandsons, so you can just live with him from now on. I’ll live with my second brother. It’s fair for each of us to have one, isn’t it? My elder brother’s wife always wants everything to be fair. As for
who can’t work anymore, my second brother’s wife probably won’t disdain . You’re still agile, and she won’t be at a loss. I’ll go to the village party secretary and head tomorrow to get them to witness this.”
Xie Changgen looked at her with contempt. His wife had never really understood anything in her lifeti. No matter how he tried to teach her, she never learned; in the end, when he got impatient, he resorted to beating her, which made her play along eventually. He thought that as she got older, she might beco wiser, but she remained a fool.
He regretted more than once, wondering why the hell he had been bewitched to marry such a woman. TNN, it’s said that marrying a virtuous wife is never wrong, but marrying the wrong one dooms three generations.
“Second brother, please talk to Dad! We shouldn’t separate,” urged Xie Changgen’s mother while clutching her younger son, who usually listened to her. With him speaking up, and the elder son likely opposing the separation too, their father would have no options left.
“Think carefully! If we separate, your wife might still live with you, but if we don’t, I bet she’d prefer staying long-term with her own parents and not returning,” said Xie Changgen, half-smiling as he watched his youngest son hesitate and avert his gaze from his mother. He couldn’t help but laugh, realizing it wasn’t a hopeless situation yet.
“Even if we separate, I still want to live with my second brother.” That way, she could still be in charge of the second brother’s household and secretly support the elder brother’s family.
“Even if you live with your second brother, it still depends on whether his wife would tolerate you. Plus, you won’t be able to run his household or think about using his resources to subsidize my elder brother.”
Xie Changgen knew his wife’s sches all too well. “Also, don’t you mind , a cripple, burdening my elder brother’s family?”
“Oh, what did I even give birth to sons for? I’m old now, and we can’t even stay united as a family without splitting up?”
Tian Xiaoju hesitated as she looked at Xie Changgen’s leg, which had been la for decades. Though it didn’t affect his walking, he struggled with farm work, and she couldn’t let him be a burden to the elder brother’s family.
“Scream it out wherever you want, whether you’ll follow my elder brother or my second brother,” said Xie Changgen, raising his palm in a threatening gesture.
Tian Xiaoju wailed, instinctively protecting her head as she blurted out, “My elder brother, I’ll follow my elder brother.”
Xie Changgen lowered his hand without actually hitting her.
Xie Changgen saw the complex look in his mother’s eyes.
“Following my elder brother is fine too, but since he’s the eldest son, and Jiabao is the first grandson, they should get a larger share.” As soon as she made her choice to stay with the elder brother, Tian Xiaoju, realizing she could no longer rely on her younger son, disregarded the disappointnt in his eyes and imdiately spoke up to secure benefits for the elder brother.
Separation might be for the best. Living in two separate households with her sons would an the old man couldn’t easily hit her anymore. And since a son is still her own, they wouldn’t really abandon her. When needed, she could just cry a little to her younger son, who always had a soft spot for her…
“Fine, but to prevent future conflicts, we need to involve the daughters-in-law’s families as well and invite the village party secretary along with so elders to witness this. We all need to sit down and agree on a formal arrangent.”
Xie Changgen had no objection; he was not blind to the scheming in his wife’s eyes—was she clever or foolish? But since he had proposed the division of the family, he naturally intended to manage the matter thoroughly and avoid any future troubles. His second daughter-in-law was already feeling disheartened, and he could not allow her to beco even more disheartened; his second son had to be turned around no matter what.
Dividing the family for the ti being, if it ant that his eldest son’s side got an advantage, it wouldn’t matter, as his second son’s side wouldn’t suffer. If the old woman and the eldest daughter-in-law sched anything in the future, with this division agreent in place, they wouldn’t have a leg to stand on in terms of reason.
In his view, a temporary loss was really nothing. Being able to rule his own house in the future would make everything worth it. Lu Chaoqun was a smart man, and he guessed that he would be even happier about it. So at this point, Xie Changgen readily nodded in agreent.
He also wanted to take this opportunity to see more of his younger daughter-in-law’s character. If she really was the magnanimous, far-sighted woman he had occasionally heard ntioned by his own mother, one not rely focused on short-term gains, then he would surely not let her suffer.
“You better not regret it,” Tian Xiaoju, seeing that things were now settled and she could gain an advantage, stopped making trouble. Her mind was totally focused on figuring out how to take less out of the savings she managed.
In the house of the eldest Xie son, Lin izhu was smiling triumphantly at Xie Changgen.
“Didn’t you see how pathetic Lu Aii looked, huh? She had formula milk, yet wanted to hide and reserve it just for her son? Dream on! Soon our Jiabao and family wealth will also get a share. She already thought of monopolizing it without even splitting the family assets. How I regret not letting our Jiabao and family wealth make a scene over that bag of malted milk powder last ti. It was too easy on her,” she fud.
“Don’t go too far,” Xie Changgen frowned.
“What do you an, too far, Xie Changgen? Who am I doing this for?” Lin izhu shouted, raising her voice.
“Don’t be so loud; I was just saying,” Xie Changgen covered her mouth, whispering an apology, “Alright, alright, whatever you want then.”
“Hmph. It’s all for you and the kids.”
Why does Lu Aii get to have a good maternal family and a cousin who looks out for her?
Why can’t her own maternal family, not even her own brothers bother to send things back to her?
When she gave birth to Jiabao and family wealth, her family only sent three pounds of eggs and half a pound of brown sugar. That was all, and her mother kept crying poverty behind her back, even managing to “borrow” ten yuan from the barely saved money she had, not to ntion that it was never returned and her mother even scolded her for never looking out for her maternal family, for giving too little.
Both were married into the Xie family; why was there such a big difference?
The more Lin izhu thought about it, the more resentful she felt in her heart.
Fortunately, this feeling of unfairness only lingered in her heart for a mont before it dissipated.
Lin izhu smugly thought that her in-laws obviously favored her more. What if Lu Aii had a good maternal family and gave birth to twins? She still faced pressure from her father-in-law and mother-in-law above her, and even her husband listened more to his mother, favoring their own son, haha!
Didn’t they say that marrying is like a woman’s second reincarnation? She might not have been lucky the first ti, but the second ti around … haha, at least it was a thousand tis, a hundred tis better than Lu Aii.
