Second Grandma Shi indeed relaxed a bit, took a deep breath, and said with a grateful smile, "Thank you, elder sister-in-law! I understand what you are saying, and although I did not co from a scholarly family like you, us daughters of the Zhou family have also been raised with strict discipline from a young age! Since I have entered the Shi family, for better or worse, I must bear it. Why should I make life difficult for myself? However," Second Grandma Shi gave a bitter smile, "my mother-in-law—"
Second Grandma Shi didn’t dare outright speak ill of her mother-in-law with her sisters-in-law. She gave a wry sigh and left everything unsaid.
"She takes her anger out on , blas for everything, either scolding or coming up with ways to tornt ! I really can’t take it anymore! Elder sister-in-law, to tell you the truth, I am really envious of you. Even though there is Gu Fangzi, both your elder brother and aunt treat you extrely well. At least no one causes you trouble without reason or makes you suffer for no cause!"
Sang Wan’s face paled, and she managed a forced smile, softly saying, "We each have our own difficulties, better left unsaid!" Envious of her? After hearing these words, Sang Wan didn’t know whether to cry or laugh. So, it turned out that she was also the object of envy! But if Second Grandma Shi knew that Gu Fangzi was soon to enter the household, if she knew the true nature of her relationship with Shi Fengju, maybe she wouldn’t envy her!
At least, she has sothing to look forward to.
While they were talking, a maid with even features, dressed in a water-pink long vest and a white silk skirt, hurried over and said anxiously, "Second Grandma, Second Madam Shi is asking why you haven’t returned yet, please go back quickly!"
Second Grandma Shi coldly glanced at her maid and said indifferently, "I know! You go back first!"
The maid hesitated for a mont, seeing that Second Grandma Shi had no intention of moving, she reluctantly agreed and left first.
Seeing that Second Madam Shi sent soone to urge Second Grandma Shi, Sang Wan was about to take her leave when Second Grandma Shi grabbed her arm, reluctant to part, "Elder sister-in-law, can you stay and talk with a little longer, please?"
"But—"
"It’s fine, just for a little while!"
"Alright!" Sang Wan couldn’t bear to refuse the pleading look on Second Grandma Shi’s face and nodded in agreent.
It wasn’t long before Second Madam Shi arrived with two or three maids and slaves, furious and shouting, "I want to see what you are up to, daring to delay and make excuses to ignore my orders! Repeatedly being invited without a response! What kind of household rules are these, for a daughter-in-law to put on more airs than the mother-in-law!"
Second Grandma Shi instinctively took two steps back, hiding beside Sang Wan, and retorted, "I was talking with elder sister-in-law! Do you need for sothing?"
Seeing her avoiding and even daring to argue back, Second Madam Shi yelled in anger, "You’re rebelling! You’re rebelling! Won’t you co here! Am I a tiger that could eat you!"
Second Grandma Shi refused to co over no matter what, clinging tightly to Sang Wan’s arm, her voice tense and fearful, "Mother, I will go back soon, in a little while! I, I am not afraid of you, you’re not a tiger!"
"You!" Second Madam Shi felt a rush of blood to her head and charged forward in a fit of rage, trying to grab Second Grandma Shi, who finally let go of Sang Wan and started to dodge and scream in fright.
Sang Wan’s heart stirred, sensing sothing wasn’t right but before she could understand fully, she heard a sharp scream, "Ah!" followed by a "plop!" Second Grandma Shi fell into the pond!
"Help! Help !" Second Grandma Shi desperately splashed the water, creating waves, her whole body sinking and floating in the pond.
"This, this" Second Madam Shi’s legs went soft, and she fell to the ground, her face deathly pale, while the maids and slaves stood frozen in shock.
"Quick, go call soone, hurry up!" Sang Wan shouted loudly.
The maids and slaves jolted awake, one of them yelling as she ran off, while the others helped Second Madam Shi to her feet.
Sang Wan, out of her wits, turned pale! Seeing Second Madam Shi staring at her as she walked towards her, her face grew even paler.
"Elder son’s wife, ah!" Second Madam Shi’s gaze was firmly fixed on her, and her pale face squeezed out a stiff smile—
Sang Wan instinctively stepped back, her lips trembling.
"Second Aunt! Elder sister-in-law!" A blunt voice ca from behind the ornantal rock.
Sang Wan and Second Madam Shi subconsciously looked up and saw Shi Lian standing there with a maid, dumbfounded, holding a broken flower branch in her hand.
"Niece!" Second Madam Shi called out eagerly.
But Shi Lian gave her an alard look, let out a low "Ah!" and, together with the maid, turned and ran. Second Madam Shi, panicked, kept calling out, "Niece! Niece, co back!" Shi Lian wasn’t listening any longer!
Sang Wan secretly breathed a sigh of relief and, drained of energy, leaned against the pavilion pole, her back covered with cold sweat.
Second Grandma Shi was quickly rescued and carried back, and a commotion was inevitable in the second house. Mrs. Wang also went to have a look and summoned Second Master Shi to the side hall for a talk. What they discussed was unknown, but Second Master Shi, in a rage, gave his wife a severe reprimand. The commotion that followed beca even more chaotic.
"It was all my fault, I should not have left! Thankfully you’re alright, Miss, otherwise—" Inside Ningyuan, Liu Ya said in fear.
"It’s not your fault, don’t bla yourself!" Sang Wan shook her head and smiled. She was the one who had wanted to walk alone and dismissed Liu Ya.
"Thank you, Miss," Liu Ya looked at her gratefully, and seeing that her face was still not looking good, she helped her with a smile, "Miss, you must have been shocked, right? Shall you lie down and rest for a while, and I’ll ask soone to make a bowl of tonic soup for you?"
Sang Wan smiled and nodded, lying down on the imperial concubine’s couch, covered to her chest with an embroidered thin blanket.
She was indeed scared. Second Grandma Shi must have decided to cause trouble today, deliberately trying to provoke Second Madam Shi, and Sang Wan just happened to pass by, allowing herself to be used by her to buy ti. However, Sang Wan didn’t bla her. After all, she was only "incidental" and not genuinely plotting against her.
