Mrs. Zhou sat on the chair and suddenly thought about how her son still didn’t have a girlfriend. She excitedly said, "What if that girl Li Si ends up marrying your brother? Our family could buy whatever we want, eating and drinking the best of everything every day!"
"Mom, a few days ago, before my brother left, they already t once. Li Si didn’t have a very good impression of my brother. This will take ti. Besides, whether they’ll work out or not, who can say for sure? You never know—there’s always a chance."
"That would be wonderful! I’ll pray for your brother to bring her into the family! That would be like having a gold mountain moved back ho! I’d even worship her every day!" Mrs. Zhou’s face was full of daydreams about the future.
Zhou Rou glanced at the worn-out window outside and sneered coldly.
...
The new sester started. Li Si arrived at Room 302. In the dorm, only Kong Dan was there, sprawled out on one of the four beds. "You’re always the first one here, Kong Dan!" she greeted warmly.
"Yeah, Li Si, did you hear that Yao iling dropped out of school?" Kong Dan stood up from her bed with the blue bedsheets and helped Li Si with her things.
"No! Why?!" Li Si’s face froze in surprise. Why would she drop out? Could it be because of that incident? No way, right?
"Just between us, I heard she got pregnant and had to drop out. After the baby’s born, she’ll figure out what to do next!" Kong Dan leaned in close and whispered.
"I can’t imagine!" Li Si was overwheld with mixed emotions. Her face showed a deep sigh—part regret for iling, part sympathy. Such promising, youthful years, lost to becoming a mother because of that. Will she be happy in the future? Or even know the aning of happiness?
Kong Dan raised her eyebrows, "By the way, Wang Shishi is commuting this sester. So now it’s just us two in the dorm. I wonder if they’ll assign anyone new!"
"They probably will. Hopefully, the newcors will be easy to get along with!" Li Si said, hopeful. Living in the sa dorm, people’s personalities vary widely. If you end up with one over-the-top roommate, your days are bound to turn into pure chaos.
"I think the sa." Kong Dan also wore a hopeful expression.
Aunt Li Guozhi walked out of the manager’s office looking dejected. Earlier, she had enthusiastically asked Manager Cui about whether a relative of hers could work there.
She thought it wouldn’t be a big problem, that they’d at least let the person co in for an interview.
But Manager Cui dismissed her request outright, saying the hiring process now has criteria, and anyone who doesn’t et them won’t be considered.
Frustrated and out of options, Li Guozhi had no choice but to call up her sister-in-law Zhang ihua and let her know.
After hanging up, Zhang ihua was fuming. What kind of place is this, not even wanting soone like her husband’s younger sister? What’s the reason for that?
This clearly wouldn’t do. It must’ve been that her sister-in-law didn’t explain things right. Once the manager sees her husband’s younger sister in person, they’ll surely hire her imdiately.
Zhang ihua decided to head to her mother’s house. She arrived right at noon. As she walked in, her mother was in the kitchen cooking. "Mom, where’s Hu Ling? Is she not here?"
Mrs. Zhang pointed to the nearby bedroom. "She’s in the room, sleeping!"
"It’s already so late, and she’s still sleeping? It’s almost noon. What ti did she go to bed last night?" Zhang ihua glanced at her watch—11:25. Still sleeping at this hour. Is she going to have breakfast or lunch?
"Keep your voice down! She and her husband ca back in the middle of the night, said they were out singing with friends. By the way, how’s her job arrangent coming? The New Year’s over—she should hurry up and start working! Once she’s at work, I’ll worry less. Staying ho all day is so frustrating to watch!" Mrs. Zhang rambled, her hands still busy cooking.
"Don’t even ntion it. My sister-in-law brought it up with the boss, and he said there’s no need. I don’t know what she said—whether it’s a temporary issue or because he hasn’t seen her yet. That’s why I plan to take Hu Ling to the restaurant myself, so the boss can et her and give his decision." Zhang ihua peeled garlic in frustration, worrying about whether Hu Ling’s lazy habits would jeopardize the plan.
"Then wait until she wakes up. After lunch, take her over and have a good talk. No matter what, she has an associate degree—managing a few people won’t be a problem!"
"Mom, you’re dreaming too big. They’re hiring workers, not managers." The old lady sure had high hopes. A big restaurant like that would hardly be short on managers, right?
"What? Soone like your sister-in-law without much education can work, and Hu Ling, with her degree, should work too? No way! You need to talk to the boss yourself, and doesn’t your niece know them? Have her put in a word too!"
Mrs. Zhang had suffered all her life from a lack of education, so she was thrilled that her middle-school-dropout son had found a girlfriend with an associate’s degree. Sure, she was a bit lazy, but she was pretty and gave them face among the relatives. So, Mrs. Zhang tolerated her flaws.
"I ntioned it during New Year, but that girl has beco more difficult to approach lately. I don’t want to strain the relationship too much. Anyway, once I et the manager, I’ll figure it out."
Zhang ihua had her own considerations. Simply for her sister-in-law’s job matter, she couldn’t risk annoying Li Si and ruining things—in the long run, she had bigger plans.
The bedroom door opened. A woman in a red nightti dress yawned and ca out, "Oh, big sis, you’re here? How long have you been here? Mom, why didn’t you wake up!"
"I just got here. Hu Ling, let’s head to the restaurant after lunch!"
"The job lined up? How much do they pay per month?" Hu Ling asked while brushing her teeth in the bathroom, her speech garbled amidst the foam.
Zhang ihua’s smile stiffened. "Not yet—it needs a face-to-face eting."
"Oh, so it needs an interview. I get that." Hu Ling splashed water on her face and went back to her room to change.
"Big sis, does this outfit look good for the interview?"
Zhang ihua saw her striking a pose in her outfit—a red, short dress paired with black tights. The skirt barely covered her hips, and Zhang ihua nearly passed out. "Hu Ling, this is a job interview. Change into sothing more appropriate. This outfit is a bit... gaudy."
"I think it’s great! My husband Victory always says I look stunning in this!" Hu Ling sat at the dining table, casually eating, dismissing her sister-in-law’s advice. To her, Zhang ihua was just jealous, jealous of her figure.
Zhang ihua shot her mother a look, hoping she’d chi in. But Mrs. Zhang ignored everything, quietly eating.
After lunch, Hu Ling pushed her bowl away and went back to her room to put on makeup. She finished quickly and ca out, ready.
Zhang ihua silently groaned. Judging by today’s events, she doubted this would lead anywhere.
The two of them left the complex, and Hu Ling imdiately waved down a taxi. About ten minutes later, they arrived at Uncle Bo’s Ho Cooking.
By now, it was past 2 p.m. Standing outside, Zhang ihua called Li Guozhi, asking her to co et them.
Li Guozhi put her work aside and stepped out of the restaurant, imdiately spotting her sister-in-law standing with a flashy-looking woman.
"Second sister-in-law, why are you here? And this is?" Was this woman her brother’s girlfriend? Since there hadn’t been a wedding yet, she hadn’t t her before.
"Guozhi! This is my brother’s girlfriend, Hu Ling. Hu Ling, this is my younger sister-in-law. Just call her ’sis’!"
