It was long past alti, but thankfully, there were still so Sweet Dew Cakes and Golden Leaf Pastries kept warm in the kitchen for the masters.
Song Lianhe nibbled absently on a pastry, glancing up from ti to ti at the servant girls chatting outside the door.
’Should I drug them and knock them out?’
’No, that would expose too easily.’
’What if I knocked them out and made it look like robbers did it?’
’That wouldn’t work either. Robbing the Governor Mansion? You’d have to be insanely audacious!’
’What if they ended up suspecting Zhou Cangyan?’
The more Song Lianhe thought, the more frustrated she beca. She took a vicious bite of a Golden Leaf Pastry, completely ignoring the crumbs that scattered around her mouth.
’Things have already gotten this bad. Why should I even care about my image?’
Fuming, she shoved the remaining half of the pastry into her mouth. Unexpectedly, it was too dry. She choked, quickly pouring herself a cup of tea. Only after chugging the entire cup and pounding her chest a few tis did she manage to swallow.
In the midst of all this, she failed to notice that the two servant girls outside had vanished.
By the ti she realized, her surroundings had fallen silent. The only sound was the occasional CRACKLE and POP of dry firewood in the stove.
The atmosphere was inexplicably eerie.
Song Lianhe slowly raised her hand, lifting a pastry to her lips. She nibbled on it, but her body grew increasingly stiff, her back ramrod straight.
At that very mont, a dark figure appeared indistinctly behind her.
The tall, slender figure stood by the wall, clad in black robes that seed to lt into the surrounding darkness.
He stared at her coldly. His eyes, a light brown, held a faint, sinister glint in the encroaching darkness.
His solitary figure was abrupt and mysterious, as if he had appeared out of thin air.
This feeling, like being cornered by a wild beast, was so familiar that her hands began to tremble uncontrollably, and her heart started to pound wildly.
She couldn’t keep up the pretense any longer. She whipped her head around—
’As expected...’
’It’s him.’
She stared at him, unblinking. Her expression shifted from initial joyous surprise to aggrieved hurt, as if soone had just bullied her. Her eyes turned red before she could even say a word.
She was still clutching the pastry, covered in the marks of her small bites. Crumbs clung to the corners of her mouth, and her eyes, at once pure and bewitching, were now filled with longing...
Zhou Cangyan leaned against the wall, his cold, detached gaze brazenly sizing her up.
’She isn’t afraid of him.’
’Not only that, she seems incredibly familiar with him.’
This was his first impression of the woman Zhou Junlin had brought back.
At the sa ti, from his wary, probing gaze, Song Lianhe suddenly understood: she was no longer in his mories.
’Right now, I’m just a stranger to him. A suspicious one at that.’
At this thought, she felt wronged all over again.
’She had been through hell and back for him, forced to leave the world of the book, and what about him? Not only did he show up alive and well, but he actually forgot her?!’
’Even if this is the setup for a new plot, it’s not fair!’
’What gives him the right?’
She hadn’t even said a word, yet tears were already streaming down her face, as if he had done sothing to her!
Zhou Cangyan furrowed his brows in disgust. He hated it when won cried, especially in such a delicate, cloying way. It was repulsive.
’My behavior right now must seem so strange, so annoying to him. His eyes say it all.’
If before she had felt wronged, now, Song Lianhe was truly heartbroken.
And it was a sorrow that could not be put into words.
She slumped down limply, her hands splayed on the table, lost in her own world of sorrow.
’It’s best if no one bothers . I’m afraid I’ll go insane!’
Zhou Cangyan had never t such a strange person. Though exceptionally handso, he was cursed with an ill-oned birth and a nature that was bloodthirsty and fond of slaughter. No woman had ever tried to get close to him. Yet this one, upon seeing him, was not surprised or afraid. Instead, her eyes were filled with resentnt and accusation...
The man behind her remained silent, and Song Lianhe suddenly felt another wave of anger.
’He cos looking for , but he doesn’t say a word. What’s his deal?!’
Even though just a mont ago she had been racking her brain for a way to see him, now that he was right in front of her, she found herself inexplicably angry.
Her emotions were a roller coaster, just like...
She clutched her lower abdon, her face instantly turning deathly pale.
’This really is a novel’s world... conflicts and drama just pop up out of nowhere!’
’I just got back, and Aunt Flo is already here. The world doesn’t even give a chance to breathe, and especially not in front of Zhou Cangyan!!’
’How can I be so unlucky?’
’That feeling... like a volcano erupting... who could possibly understand?!’
As if on cue, the mont she realized her period had started, her lower abdon began to cramp violently.
When she first discovered the original owner of this body suffered from cramps, she had taken steps to regulate it, and the pain had eased.
But upon her return, it was as if everything had been reset to zero. All her previous efforts were for nothing.
Just like the man before her—no matter how much she had given, he had forgotten her completely!!
Song Lianhe’s lip trembled, and it looked as if she was about to cry again.
Zhou Cangyan watched as her expression shifted several tis in just a few monts. Her emotions were so volatile, she seed ntally unhinged.
And just then, Song Lianhe suddenly sat up straight. Her face was pale and her eyes were red as she looked at him. "Why aren’t you saying anything?"
Zhou Cangyan stared at her for a long mont before speaking slowly, "Can you cure her?"
’He ca looking for ... for Song Xilan?!’
Now Song Lianhe was about to explode with rage. Without thinking, she blurted out, "No! Not only can I not cure her, but even the gods themselves couldn’t save her!"
The words had barely left her mouth when she felt a gust of wind. The next mont, she was lifted off her feet and slamd against the wall. A large hand, its five fingers like an iron clamp, closed tightly around her throat.
"Say that again."
His light brown eyes were cast downward, not even deigning to look at her, but his voice was cold enough to freeze blood. "I’ll take your life right now."
Song Lianhe froze. She could see it—he truly intended to kill her.
He really wanted to kill her.
Even though she knew full well she was gone from his mory, that she had just popped up out of nowhere with no one to rember her...
...it still hurt. She was still heartbroken.
Her lips trembled, but she couldn’t manage to utter a single word.
An inexplicable, imnse sorrow, like a sticky spiderweb, wrapped around her layer by layer until she could no longer struggle, resigned to her fate.
DRIP.
DRIP... DRIP...
Zhou Cangyan’s brow furrowed slightly. He slowly raised his gaze, which swept over the few glistening teardrops that had fallen on the back of his hand.
The nearly frozen lake in his heart was stirred by these few tears, sending out ripple after ripple.
As he began to process what was happening, his hand reacted before his mind, slowly releasing its grip and letting her fall to the floor.
Song Lianhe braced herself with her hands on the floor and blinked hard, forcing back her tears.
She admitted she had been impulsive, letting her emotions get the better of her and throwing a tantrum. From his perspective, he hadn’t done anything wrong.
’The world of the novel had simply returned to its original track. As the villain, he was obsessed with the female lead.’
’She had read the original novel; she knew this already, didn’t she?’
She scoffed and shook her head in self-mockery.
’What’s the point of getting worked up over a fictional character?’
Her fingers slowly dug into the cold floor, but she didn’t even notice when her nails began to break.
’But... but she really did love this fictional character.’
