Chapter 699: Chapter 712: Guh Haifan Returns to His Hotown (Part 1)

Guh Haifan participated in the exams in May. Since Guh Xiuxiu went to the Mainland, he had started attending boarding school. Having endured hardships from a young age, he was very resilient and didn’t need Lu Jiaxin to worry about him.

After the exam, Guh Haifan said to Lu Jiaxin, “Cousin, I want to go to the Forty-nine City to accompany Aunt.”

Due to intense academic pressure over the years, he only had ti during winter and sumr vacations to visit Guh Xiuxiu in the Forty-nine City. He could clearly feel Aunt’s health deteriorating over ti. Now that the exams were over and before going to university, he would stay in the Forty-nine City with her.

Of course, Lu Jiaxin had no objections.

Guh Haifan then said, “Cousin, I want to go back to the old ho. It’s been many years since I returned, and perhaps grass covers my father’s grave.”

“Indeed, it’s ti to go back.”

Guh Haifan talked about this issue with Lu Jiaxin because he had a request, “Cousin, this ti returning, I want to repay those who helped before. Cousin, could you arrange for two people to accompany back ho.”

Lu Jiaxin responded with a casual sound, deliberately asking, “Why do you need soone to accompany you back?”

Guh Haifan gave a bitter smile and said, “One should not harbor thoughts of harming, but should always guard against being hard. If soone sees I’m now wealthy and decides to trap , refusing to let leave, it would be dangerous.”

Lu Jiaxin replied approvingly, “It’s good that you think this way. Those relatives haven’t seen you for seven years, and their character is uncertain at this point. Haifan, people can be malevolent, not just your relatives; when making friends in the future, it’s the sa. Don’t trust people easily, or they might push you into a pit.”

She was the guardian of Guh Haifan. However, he didn’t need her to worry about his life or studies. Even hiring ho tutors was left to the secretary, and she would only occasionally visit the school if there was an issue. She was now famously celebrated in Hong Kong, and as her cousin, Guh Haifan wasn’t bullied.

Guh Haifan had already witnessed the malevolence of human hearts through experiences with the He Family. He nodded to show he understood: “Cousin, how is the He Family now?”

If he hadn’t ntioned it, Lu Jiaxin would have forgotten about that family, “He Zhuliang was seriously ill last year, and despite his dical parole, it was no help – he eventually passed away. His wife, Li Xuanqi, is now cared for by He Yanyan.”

He Yanyan had no special skills. Her entry into university was through donations made just to get a diploma. However, she had a pretty face and was arrogant at first, but after being hamred by reality a few tis, she beca more well-behaved. It’s said she’s now a mistress for so wealthy old man. As for Li Xuanqi, she lives a life of food and clothes security thanks to the money Yanyan earns from being a mistress. Lu Jiaxin didn’t pay attention to the rest of the people.

Guh Haifan had a good impression of He Mingzhu, he didn’t care much about others: “Cousin, where is Sister Mingzhu now? Is she doing well?”

Lu Jiaxin smiled and said, “I don’t know where she is now. But she has money and ability; she would be doing well wherever she is. Haifan, you’re the sa. As long as you’ve learned real skills, you’ll be fine anywhere.”

“I know.”

The next day, Guh Haifan returned to the Forty-nine City, stayed for a day, and then went back to the old ho. After seven years away, he dread of the people from his old ho. But truly returning there, seeing the muddy, murky paths and low houses, he suddenly felt a bit uncomfortable.

An elderly man saw him and cautiously asked, “Comrade, who are you looking for?”

Seeing the old man with white hair, Guh Haifan felt his nose tingling and his eyes moist, “Sixth Uncle, it’s , Haifan, I am Haifan!”

After losing his father, his mother remarried, and he was so poor he had no food to eat. Many clansn gave him grain, and he didn’t starve to death. Soon after, he was fortunate enough to be chosen by Aunt to go to Hong Kong.

Sixth Uncle was incredulous, “Are you really Haifan? How could this be?”

When Guh Haifan left seven years ago, he was just a skinny little boy; but standing here now was a sunny, handso young man, obviously nurtured by a wealthy family. Right, Haifan was taken away by his wealthy Aunt.

Realizing this, Uncle Liu asked, “Where is your Aunt? How co she let you return?”

Before coming here, Aunt i and Aunt Hong had reminded him not to tell the Gu Family of Aunt’s matters in the Forty-nine City. These two had been in wealthy families and knew well the malevolence in hearts. If the Gu Family were to know the old lady was in the Forty-nine City, the family mbers would surely co knocking. It wouldn’t be a problem if the old lady were clear-headed, but now she’s not lucid.

Guh Haifan said, “Aunt is in Hong Kong. I’ve returned after the exams, and I’ll be going abroad to study soon, so it may be a few years before I return again.”

He applied to several well-known overseas dical universities. Going to Hong Kong was initially stumbling, but after learning Cantonese and English, his grades improved rapidly. Lu Jiaxin’s requirent was overall developnt in morals, intellect, and physique, so she had him involved in basketball, tennis, and other sports, joining the school basketball team in Form Four. Although exam results weren’t out yet, he felt certain he would be accepted by a foreign university.

Sixth Uncle quickly invited him inside.

The Gu Family hearing he returned hurried to Sixth Uncle’s ho. Uncle Gu also ca over hoping to take him to stay at his place.

Guh Haifan refused, saying it was fine to stay at Sixth Uncle’s place. Many in the village had given him food, but his uncle and grandfather hadn’t helped. On the contrary, Big Aunt and aunt said he cursed his father, and his mother hurriedly remarried for fear of being cursed.

Not long later, his little uncle also ca, wanting him to stay at their ho, but Guh Haifan refused again. He didn’t hold grudges about past events, as this place was truly poor, and another mouth would burden the family. But he couldn’t forgive the rumors about him cursing his father to death.

Sixth Uncle’s eldest daughter-in-law brought incense and candles, and paper money to him. Guh Haifan carried the basket up the hill, looking at the low grave mound, he said, “Sixth Uncle, I want to rebuild my father’s grave, but I don’t know how.”

Sixth Uncle stated rebuilding a grave requires consulting soone to choose an auspicious date; it can’t just be done impulsively.

Not wishing to stay long, after visiting the grave and descending, Guh Haifan asked Sixth Uncle who to consult for choosing an auspicious date.

Sixth Uncle, despite being over sixty, was still in good health and laughed, “I’ll take you there now. Once the date is chosen, we can buy materials.”

The date for rebuilding the grave was quickly chosen, set for mid-next month. Guh Haifan could not stay in the village for that long, so he entrusted the task of buying materials to Sixth Uncle’s eldest son.

Sixth Uncle said, “Haifan, those in the village who helped you should be thanked now.”

If it weren’t for their aid back then, Guh Haifan might not have survived that winter. Though he had helped around a lot, the families with many children weren’t well off, with limited capacity to assist. Yet many lent a hand, providing small amounts of grain, bit by bit, enabling him to survive the hardest tis. Later, he impressed Aunt from Hong Kong and was taken away, and many envied him.

Guh Haifan nodded in agreent, “I’ll go now.”
