Another thing to take note of was that one of the ard n had hidden behind a pillar within the lobby so distance away and was watching .

The fact that I had spotted him early spoke to the professionalism of the n within the building. Keeping an eye on the empty space ahead of , I brought out my phone.

I wanted to dial Lin, but I frowned when I saw there was no service.

"Jamrs," I muttered, taking a few steps back.

Echo!

My mind vision stretched far, but it only covered 30 ters. I couldn't keep an eye on what was happening in the other parts of the building.

"Is that a sniper rifle?" I baulked inwardly as my 3d model showed the image of one of the ard n already on the rooftop, heading toward its edge.

Knowing that the man was moving to get a vantage point from which he could shoot , I moved toward the entrance, standing right in front of the door and knocking on the glass.

Initiating engagent at this point was the worst-case scenario. If these people were as professional as they seed, they would have no trouble using the hostages against , maybe even making an example if I proved stubborn.

I figured that, to avoid the possibility of suspecting sothing was wrong and calling the police, they'd place one of the hostages under threat, let them co down here and welco in, or perhaps send away. But I was wrong.

Out of nowhere, my senses blared with a strong feeling of danger. But before I could even act, the feeling vanished, and the ard man who had been hiding behind the large white pillar walked out.

Given his angle and distance from the pillar, he walked like he had just descended from the stairs behind him. With his gun pointing down and his eyes narrowed at , he calmly walked forward.

"Wow. Talk about aura."

Garbed in a black combat uniform from head to toe, even wearing a bulletproof vest, the man looked dangerous, but strangely, he gave off no visible threat.

No Psion or foreign energy was being released into the air. No, the feeling this man gave ca only from the way he walked. I could still sense the bloodlust within him, though.

The door opened, and soon I was face-to-face with a relatively chubby man. His gear didn't help with my description.

"Who are you?" he asked.

"I'm Dave Caron."

"Who are you?" he repeated.

"That's classified. What do you want?"

Honestly, I couldn't say if my reaction to the situation was normal.

I had a kill count surpassing twenty. I had battled super-powered beings and nearly been killed by a fighter, watching a missile fly past.

The sight of a single man ard in standard combat gear hardly scared . I could only hope that the slight wariness mixed with confidence I showed him, given his thod of approach, wasn't too far outside the behaviour of a normal civilian.

"I'm here to et Mrs. Lin. Is she around?"

"Yeah, but she's busy at the mont. Co at a different ti."

It was eyebrow-raising that he was ready to let go, but I could feel his thoughts, and I knew the best plan was still to get in.

Even though I would look stupid and possibly even suspicious, I pressed forward.

"She told to co over. You can't just expect to go away after coming all the way here.

I stay at Harrison."

Looking at , the man frowned, his eyes scanning my outfit. Then he took a step to the side.

"She better have invited you."

"Sure."

"Follow ."

Walking behind the big man, we climbed to the top floor, our steps echoing all around, and we only stopped when we arrived before a door.

Opening the door, he motioned for to enter, and I did, raising my hands in the air even before I could see into the room.

Bang!

Bang!

Two shots were fired—one taking out the ard man already in the room, who had been watching over the hostages, and the other aid at the gunman who had led there.

Bam!

Displaying agility honed from years of training, I had successfully taken out his colleague, but the chubby gunman anticipated . Just as I raised my gun, he moved his head to the side, dodging the bullet I fired.

Not wasting a second, he lowered his centre of gravity and pushed off from his right foot, looking to ram into and knock off my feet. But my palm on his head stopped him in his tracks.

It was almost comical—watching the big man's arms flail as he was held in place by my hand on his head, his body bent, and his eyes facing the ground.

Though shocked, the gunman quickly threw two punches at , and before they could hit, my left wrist did a near half-turn.

Crack!

His neck snapped. The gunman dropped dead, and letting his body fall to the ground, I fully entered the room and scanned the faces of the groaning individuals seated on the floor, bound at both wrists and ankles.

"Who here is Lin?"

Everyone went silent, and just as I began to fear I would need to introduce and explain myself, a voice rang out.

"I'm Lin."

Just like her na suggested, she was a woman of Asian origin, and I nearly facepald at the fact that I hadn't pointed her out sooner.

"It's nearly been an hour since I touched down. How long have you been in captivity?"

"Over an hour," the woman weakly replied as I freed her limbs.

I silently watched as she freed her colleagues and then began moving toward the door.

"You guys should lie down, just in case."

Exiting the room, I entered the corridor with my two pistols in hand. Turning to the left, I raised them and began firing.
