For several minutes, the silence of the interrogation room was my only company. Dull sounds from around the station reached my ears, and the bright light hanging from the ceiling made it hard to close my eyes.

"They really have no regard for ," I thought, as the minutes stretched and felt like they had gone far past ten.

"Idiots."

I could see them running around the station like headless chickens, searching for sothing that didn't exist, rooms and storage spaces being thoroughly checked.

Twice, an officer and Annie herself had co into the observation area, stopping behind the one-way window to check on and my surroundings.

Echo!

"Ohh," I chuckled inwardly.

My latest 3d image showed they had brought over my impounded Camaro and were now going over it like roaches.

Frustration was clear on Annie's face. Try as she might, she couldn't stop herself from lashing out at .

I entertained the possibility that they would plant more nonexistent evidence against , but Annie gave up. After wiping her face, she returned to the interrogation room with a look of disinterest.

Though I couldn't be sure, the fact that they hadn't planted another bag of drugs made consider the possibility that this precinct wasn't responsible for my setup. They were just pawns.

It didn't take long for Annie to step back into the room. Unbothered, she moved forward and took a seat opposite .

She remained silent, just idly staring at my face and looking into my eyes. I got bored.

"If you don't have anything to say, stand up, turn around, and bend over, that's a much better view. By the way, where is my lawyer?"

"You have a rotten mind."

"And you have a sad husband. Can't believe he lets you stay in here for hours a day."

"Hmmm."

Saying nothing, Annie stood up and moved behind to undo my cuffs.

"Follow ."

"Of course." I stood without resistance.

Walking behind her, I passed through doors and corridors, entering the station lobby, and from there, we exited the building.

"Secretly bring in, but publicly take out," I chuckled, understanding Annie's intentions.

If I were a drug dealer, what better way to make my life miserable than to make it look like I'd been secretly talking to the police?

The woman might not have been responsible for the bag of cocaine, but right now, she was setting up for failure.

"You've caught our eye, Marcu. Right now, your people are dead. Talk to us and we'll offer you a deal where everyone wins. Nobody likes a snitch. It's only a matter of ti before you're set up."

"Hmm. Where's my car?"

Pointing across the street, Annie handed the keys, but as she turned to leave, I spoke up.

"Did you contact your superiors like I told you to?"

She turned back with a raised eyebrow. I shrugged.

"When it gets too hot, consider bringing your ass to . I might accept alternative compensation."

Though there was a trace of worry in her eyes, Annie said nothing and departed. As I walked toward my car, I conjured up an image in my head.

"Nadia, how are you doing?"

"I'm fine, sir. How about you?"

"I'm doing great, very great. I just ca up with a plan to sue the state. But first, how do you think the dia would react to a story about a young, brilliant man being detained over rumored drug dealings and also being frad?"

"Were you arrested?"

"Yes."

"Mugshot?" my assistant quickly asked.

"Yes."

"Statent?"

"I think so."

"Where are you?"

"At the front of the cell."

"What's your address? I'm on my way."

...

Though I didn't tell Nadia exactly how it happened, I gave her a full account of what had occurred. Communicating with Denise, I was about to enter my first clash with the governnt.

People who say doctors are annoying because of how ticulous they are have clearly never t lawyers.

Nadia worked for , but her questions had seriously considering forfeiting Annie's ass, millions of dollars, and several negotiable benefits.

It was 8 p.m. when I got ho. I collapsed on my bed once again, staring up at the ceiling.

One of humanity's biggest questions was the existence of extraterrestrial life. Surpassing even their curiosity for the deepest parts of the sea, humans looked beyond the planet, beyond the solar system, and even beyond the galaxy in search of life, and, more importantly, another species that stood on the sa level of intelligence as them.

While our intelligence in the grand sche of the universe was debatable, the good news was that I had now joined the exclusive club of the very few people in the world who knew aliens existed. And this wasn't just because our satellites had detected them from space, but because they were here on Earth.

The bad news? These aliens were not friendly. Worse still, they had infiltrated our society.

Despite his position and connections, Kyle claid this was as much as he knew about Earth's situation with extraterrestrials, not even their race's na or appearance.

As for why the single father was being targeted, he suspected it was because the alien faction within the governnt wanted to fra the Los Angeles administration, paint them as alien sympathisers, and install soone on their side to lead New York. New York was a strategic position through which many events could be manipulated.

Aliens infiltrating and invading. Humans supporting aliens.

"System, what do you think?"

[The world is vast.]

"I think Kyle is crazy."

[Perhaps.]

After the ntion of knights and witches, I'd expected our enemy to be so awakened demon or chained evil dragon. But here I was, being told it was aliens.

Turning my head to the side, I idly stared at the moon through the blinds and like that, I drifted into a deep dream.

There was lightning and fire. Fighters and tanks. Aliens with tall, slim bodies and black, beady eyes.

It wasn't a war of humans versus aliens, but a war of everybody against everybody. So idiot launched a nuke, and the next thing I knew, I was looking at Earth from high above, watching as a continent was lit up in flas.
