Ao Tianze had simply been struck by an unexpected disaster. He was walking perfectly fine, and then his lower back gave out after being struck by an unseen force. Ao Tianze decided to find an enlightened monk to perform a ritual.

The news of Ao Tianze’s accident immediately flew to every palace and courtyard. A bunch of consorts swarmed to Ning Shu’s Jiaofang Palace, demanding to see the emperor.

And to make their presence known while they were at it.

Ning Shu turned no one away. She let all these beautiful women in. Then, the originally spacious inner hall appeared a bit crowded because of these women. They blocked the bedside one by one, annoying Ao Tianze to the point of explosion.

Moreover, these consorts had all sorts of fragrances on their bodies. Their clothes were heavily perfumed with incense. The scents of scented balms, rouge, and the like all rushed into Ao Tianze’s nasal cavity at once, giving him a massive headache from the fumes.

One by one, the consorts asked about his well-being. Their incessant chattering made Ao Tianze’s head feel like it was going to explode.

It was like having five hundred ducks quacking in his ears. Having too many women around was simply annoying, especially since these women were only after the power and authority in his hands.

This made him feel even more irritated.

Ning Shu stood to the side with a smile. She was tolerant and magnanimous, the very picture of an elegant and graceful empress. Xi’er leaned in close to Ning Shu’s ear and said, “Your Highness, Shuangyun Palace sent a servant girl over to ask what happened.”

Ning Shu raised an eyebrow slightly. This was exactly why Fu Min was considered intelligent. At a time like this, so many consorts ing over to offer their greetings only made Ao Tianze impatient. Waiting to speak with Ao Tianze alone was definitely better than peting for attention and being an annoying nuisance like this.

There was no love and no hate without reason. Men liked women with a bit of a temper, but who could also read the room and understand the situation.

“Your Highness…” Xi’er asked Ning Shu, “How should we reply?”

Ning Shu said flatly, “Just say we are not sure, and leave it at that.”

“This emperor is fine. All of you get out and stay in your respective palaces,” Ao Tianze shouted. He was finally unable to tolerate these chattering women any longer.

“Your Majesty, this woman…”

“Shut up. Do you think this emperor isn’t annoyed enough already?” Ao Tianze bluntly told these women to get lost.

The consorts had no other choice. Seeing Ao Tianze’s incredibly dark expression, they could only bow one by one and leave.

Once the consorts had all withdrawn, Ning Shu approached the bed and asked, “Your Majesty, how are you feeling now?”

“Ugh…” Ao Tianze moved his body. He felt that his body wasn’t as numb anymore, but his lower back felt incredibly sore. It was so sore!

The pain had also lessened. “I am alright. It is much more fortable now.”

Ning Shu revealed a gentle smile. “It is good that Your Majesty is alright.”

Although Ning Shu smiled beautifully, Ao Tianze did not look at her at all. He said to the eunuch beside him, “Carry this emperor back.”

“Yes.” Ao Tianze was placed on a sedan chair and carried back to his own bedchamber, swaying along the way.

Ning Shu continued to smile, watching with a grin as Ao Tianze was carried away.

Xi’er looked at Ning Shu and said, “Your Highness, why didn’t you ask His Majesty to stay? That way, Your Highness could have taken care of him.”

Ning Shu’s lips twitched. That would be asking for trouble. She would work herself to the bone without getting a single word of praise, exhausting herself like a dog, and the other party wouldn’t even appreciate her care.

Ning Shu smiled with noble elegance. “We should leave matters like caring for His Majesty to the imperial physicians. People like us who don’t understand medical principles shouldn’t make a mess of things.”

“Yes,” Xi’er said immediately.

Ning Shu returned to the hall where food was laid out on the table. Xi’er said, “Your Highness, this servant will have someone prepare something fresh.”

“There is no need.”

Ning Shu made do with what was there and ate it. Then, she took a walk in her palace courtyard. As for Ao Tianze, Ning Shu could not care less.

From now on, Ao Tianze would be the prime example of being ‘short, small, and fast-releasing.’ He was nothing but a pewter spearhead made to look like silver.

The leaking of kidney qi had caused damage to Ao Tianze’s body.

Now everyone was part of the high-stress syndrome group. They were all part of the infertile demographic.

After walking for a while, Ning Shu began to sweat and felt a bit more fortable. She rested for a bit, washed up, and then lay on the bed, hypnotizing herself.

I need to sleep, sleep…

She silently recited the heart-clearing chant in her mind. The truth was that the entrustor had never had a single good night’s sleep. Even when she managed to fall asleep, her constant anxiety caused her to have endless dreams. When she woke up in the morning, her body would feel exhausted, even more tired than if she hadn’t slept at all.

Eating delicacies and wearing fine silk clothing did not necessarily equate to happiness. In short, everyone had to dedicate their mental energy and bear the responsibilities associated with their position.

Ning Shu fell into a groggy sleep. The next morning, she was woken up by Xi’er.

Ning Shu opened her eyes. Her eyes stung and her body was exhausted. Motherfucker. Being in poor health was truly torturous. It wouldn’t kill you, but the disfort was agonizing.

Ning Shu mobilized her spiritual energy to heal her body.

“Your Highness, it is time to get up. The consorts of the inner palace will be here to pay their respects shortly,” Xi’er said while washing Ning Shu’s face. Ning Shu rubbed her eyebrows and took a deep breath. She asked, “Is there any news from His Majesty’s side?”

“His Majesty did not attend the morning assembly today,” Xi’er replied. Then, she and a few other palace maids helped Ning Shu dress and apply her makeup.

Looking at her blurry reflection in the bronze mirror, Ning Shu smiled faintly and adjusted the hair at her temples. She drank some water, ate a simple bite, and then headed to the front hall.

The consorts of the inner palace had all arrived. They bowed to Ning Shu and then one by one asked about His Majesty’s condition.

Ning Shu simply said he was fine and that His Majesty would recover after resting for a while.

Ning Shu looked toward Fu Min, who was sitting to the side, silent and keeping a low profile. At a glance, Fu Min was a pure and crystalline beauty. She had a bit of an ethereal, elven quality to her, yet she didn’t possess a flighty or erratic personality.

She exuded a vibrant charm.

Ning Shu smiled and said to Fu Min, “Lady Min, have you seen His Majesty?”

Fu Min stood up and bowed. “Your Highness, this woman has not seen the emperor.”

“So even you haven’t seen him,” Ning Shu said casually, causing the surrounding consorts to look at Lady Min with strange expressions.

Although Fu Min sensed this, she remained posed and didn’t say a single unnecessary word.

Fu Min was truly a woman who knew when to advance and when to retreat.

Ning Shu withdrew her evaluating gaze from Fu Min. She then instructed the consorts to quiet down and behave, as His Majesty currently needed to rest well.

“Blegh…” A consort covered her mouth. Her face was pale.

Ning Shu’s eyes flashed slightly as she asked, “Consort Xuan, what is wrong?”

“To answer Your Highness, this woman feels nauseous.” Consort Xuan’s face was extremely pale, and she looked very haggard.

Ning Shu could not control the smile spreading across her face. She said to Xi’er, “Hurry and summon a court physician. There is definitely good news.”

“Yes…” Xi’er quickly sent someone to fetch a court physician.

The other consorts also guessed a certain possibility. Their faces filled with jealousy as they twisted their handkerchiefs and stared intently at Consort Xuan’s stomach.

Ning Shu glanced at Fu Min. Fu Min did not show any signs of jealousy, but she looked crestfallen. She clearly believed that this child belonged to Ao Tianze.

Had Ao Tianze not told Fu Min the truth?

Perhaps he was waiting for the dust to settle before telling her about it. Then he could ask her if she was touched by his actions or not.
