Father Xu looked a little conflicted, but when he thought about all that money—and reminded himself that Xu Xin was his daughter, after all—he opened his mouth.

“Uh… Xinxin’s my daughter too, so about the compensation money…”

“What’s that got to do with you? That money belongs to Xinxin,” Mother Xu snapped. Her eyes were sharp. Her resentnt towards her ex-husband was clear, laced with disgust.

“I’m her father. I should get half, shouldn’t I?” Father Xu finally dropped the pretense.

“No matter what, Xinxin is still my daughter,” he insisted shalessly.

Mother Xu was furious. “And what kind of father were you to her, exactly? How dare you show your face here asking for money? Do you have no sha?”

“No one can take away the fact that I’m her father,” Father Xu declared, puffing himself up.

Ning Shu opened the door to the house, and the whole lot of them ca barging in like they owned the place.

Ning Shu walked straight over to the landline and dialed the police. “Soone’s broken into my ho and is trying to steal money. Mm-hmm, there are several hundred thousand yuan here.”

Father Xu: …

“You called the police?” he stared at Ning Shu in disbelief.

Ning Shu calmly put down the phone. “Yes, I did. You and Mom have been divorced for over ten years, and the court awarded custody to her. Now you show up demanding money? That’s just pathetic.”

“I’m your father!” Father Xu said. He was fuming and was breathing heavily.

Her stepmother, Li Shan, quickly stepped in. “Xinxin, your dad has high blood pressure. Don’t upset him.”

“Oh, so now you’re pressuring with filial piety?”

Ning Shu looked at her coldly. This woman was clearly far more calculating than her father.

With a forced smile on her face, Li Shan said, “Was there really any need to call the police? It makes such an ugly scene. No matter what, he’s still your father.”

What Ning Shu hated most was this kind of person, who disappeared the mont things got tough, but would co running to you the second you had anything. If you so much as protested, you were instantly labeled unfilial. They’d use the weight of moral obligation as heavy shackles.

Ning Shu turned to Mother Xu and said, “Mom, sit down. Let’s just wait for the police.”

Chengcheng pointed at Ning Shu and said, “You’re an evil, horrible woman!”

“Chengcheng! How can you say that?” Li Shan scolded. Then, she turned to Ning Shu and, with an apologetic smile on her face, said, “Chengcheng is just a child.”

“Doesn’t matter,” Ning Shu said with a shrug. “I had no intention of forgiving him anyway.”

As if being young made him special.

Li Shan’s face stiffened, but she quickly adjusted and said, “Xinxin, we all know how you got that money. You were supposed to be dead. If you call the police, your identity might be exposed.”

Ning Shu imdiately picked up on the veiled threat. Li Shan thought she had leverage now.

But Ning Shu wasn’t afraid of being exposed. She was now Xu Chen.

She could talk all she wanted.

“So what?” Ning Shu spread her hands, unfazed. “So hand over the money?”

“This money is for my mom’s surgery. You’re really going to try and take soone’s life-saving funds?” Ning Shu looked directly at Li Shan. “I know you’re a beautiful, gentle, kind, and generous woman. Surely soone like you wouldn’t stoop to sothing so low-down and shaless, sothing that ought to get you struck by lightning and leave your arse split open?”

Li Shan, ever the expert in putting on a front, was now flushed with embarrassnt from Ning Shu’s relentless sarcasm.

Soon, the police arrived.

Ning Shu imdiately tilted her head, crossed her eyes, and sat down on the floor, playing up her ntally disabled persona. She wailed loudly and said, “They’re trying to steal my mommy’s money! It’s for her surgery! Waaaahhh!”

Everyone: …

The police ignored Ning Shu entirely and turned to the sane adult, Mother Xu, for an explanation.

With a face full of scorn, Mother Xu laid out the entire situation.

This bunch just wanted to cash in on the death of soone else.

Father Xu looked at Ning Shu throwing a tantrum on the floor like a child and was seething inside. “My daughter’s not dead. That’s my eldest daughter, Xu Xin. They’ve tricked you. They swindled the money!”

His words tumbled out in a flustered rant. He kept ranting until Li Shan tugged on his sleeve.
