"Julia, the servants will take care of it," Glades said. The Horne Family always prepared their own food and took it to the hospital, as they were worried the hospital's als wouldn't be good enough.
Hearing his beloved wife's concerned chiding, Glades's heart ached with affection.
"It's okay, I can manage." After Julia finished helping him dress and tie his necktie, she gave him a once-over and finally said with satisfaction, "Alright, let's go downstairs. We'll have breakfast first. You've skipped breakfast three tis and lunch twice this past week. I won't stand for you going hungry."
Julia grabbed her purse and pulled Glades out of the room.
She had noticed every single day he missed breakfast or lunch. Instantly, Glades's heart grew warm and filled with sweetness. Usually, it was he who paid attention to her. Now, she had learned to watch over him too.
"Sister-in-law!"
Just as they left the room, Adele arose from the sofa in the hall to et them.
Adele's expression was a little panicked and fearful, as if she had encountered sothing particularly frightening.
"Adele, what's wrong?" Julia imdiately let go of Glades's hand and walked over to Adele, asking with concern, "You look a bit pale too." Glades also approached.
"Sister-in-law, I have sothing to tell you," Adele said nervously in a whisper to Julia. Catching sight of Glades coming over, her face suddenly flushed, and she blurted out to Glades, "Big brother, can you go downstairs first? I need to talk about so private woman-to-woman matters with my sister-in-law."
Hey, the 'sister-in-law' she's referring to is my wife, isn't she? My sister's tone made it sound as if Julia belonged to her, not .
However, Glades said nothing. He just glared at Adele before turning to head toward the staircase.
Forget it. She's my own sister. I'll be generous and lend my dear wife and their baby to her for ten minutes.
Only after seeing Glades descend did Adele pull Julia aside, far away from downstairs. Then, with a worried and fearful face, Adele said to Julia, "Sister-in-law, I haven't gotten my period. Do you think I could be...?"
Nine days had passed since she lost her virginity. She was supposed to get her period yesterday, but it hadn't co. She was scared, worried that the one night of passion might have left a seed.
She was still unmarried and didn't even have a boyfriend. If she really were pregnant, what would she do? The rumors in Upper Class Society would devour her, leaving not even bones behind. Everyone would look at her strangely. And if she really were pregnant, could she keep the child? She didn't even know who the father was.
Upon hearing this, Julia was shocked. No way! Could my sister-in-law really be that lucky—hitting the jackpot on the first try?
"Adele, don't panic. It sotis can be delayed by a few days. Besides, it's only been seven or eight days. How can you be sure you're pregnant?" Julia hurriedly consoled Adele. But in her heart, she knew that if one were truly pregnant, their period wouldn't arrive when it was due, even if it had only been seven or eight days since conception.
"But... I've always been very regular, it's just..." As if struck by a sudden realization, Adele grew paler and whispered sothing in Julia's ear. Julia's expression also changed slightly. With a pained look, Adele continued, "I really don't know why this ti would be an exception. Sister-in-law, I'm scared, I'm really scared. What should I do if it's true?" At that mont, Adele felt an unprecedented fear.
After all, she was a 22-year-old woman with no experience in love and certainly no preparation for motherhood. Her future still seed a vast unknown.
That incident, she had treated as a nightmare, hoping that upon waking up, it would all be over. If the dream had left a mark, how would she cope? How would she face it?
"Don't make a fuss or panic. The more anxious you are, the less it's likely to co. Wait a little while longer, and I'll quietly buy you an early pregnancy test to check," Julia advised, also sowhat at a loss. Who would want to bear the child of an unknown man? Keeping it would invite ridicule and whispers behind her back; not keeping it would also be a spiritual blow to Adele.
Julia couldn't help but sigh inwardly. Oh, why must there be so much trouble, one crisis after another.
It was best to keep Adele's situation quiet for now and not let Dr. Lei check her pulse.
"Okay," Adele nodded. That was all she could do for now.
"Sis, don't tell my brother. Otherwise, he'd get even busier. I don't want him to be distracted with finding out who that man is," Adele suddenly cautioned Julia.
Julia embraced her, patting her back and silently agreeing to her request.
