Caron Fairchild’s gaze followed. "Is the Young Madam sick?"
Ethan Lancaster imperceptibly averted his gaze. Neither of them answered, but Caron Fairchild could tell at a glance.
The dicine was all in its sealed, original packaging, and Raina had just co down from upstairs. It was obvious Ethan had soone prepare it for her.
’So he couldn’t be completely heartless after all. How could this be allowed to continue?’
’This woman brought such harm to the Lancaster family. If he keeps indulging her like this, and she teams up with Miles Hawthorne again, we’ll probably be the next ones to suffer.’
Caron Fairchild hid the sharp glint in his eyes, walked over, and feigned a look of concern. "You’d better take good care of yourself. The Young Madam of the Lancaster family will have a lot on her plate."
"Thank you for your concern, Mr. Fairchild."
"I’m leaving now. I’ll go arrange that matter we discussed."
As Ethan Lancaster watched Caron Fairchild leave, Raina picked up the dicine on the table and examined it carefully, finally choosing two boxes.
"I’ve contacted a leading specialist abroad for your sister and created a new rehabilitation plan."
Raina nodded, her expression blank. "Thank you."
She went into the kitchen and ca out with a glass of water. "I have to go to work."
"Have the driver take you."
"No need, I’ve already called a car."
’If you know this tenderness is a trap, why walk right into it?’
Raina arrived at the hospital. She had just poured herself a glass of water and sat down when her phone rang.
She glanced at the caller ID and didn’t want to answer, but she was afraid soone from her family was calling about sothing important. After a mont’s hesitation, Raina answered. "Hello."
"Sis." The voice on the phone was Mia Reddington’s. Raina’s fingertips twitched, wanting to end the call.
"Don’t hang up. I have sothing to tell you."
"What is it?"
Mia was no longer as aggressive as usual. "Sis, your ex-boyfriend is in big trouble. How can you not care at all?"
"I don’t need you to tell this."
"Sis, brother-in-law said my legs can get better, that I’ll be able to stand up. I genuinely want to make up with you."
Raina lightly pressed her temples. "Then congratulations."
"Stop beating around the bush. Let’s get straight to the point. Besides, you know damn well how my leg got broken, so don’t act like you’re doing so grand favor by forgiving ."
’Raina was just so infuriating.’ On the other end of the line, Mia’s face turned livid. "Your precious Hawthorne is about to die, and you’re still in the mood to bicker with ?"
"Thanks for the kind reminder. Are you done?"
"I know what brother-in-law and his friends are planning to do. Can you really bear to see Miles Hawthorne fall into their hands?"
Raina was getting annoyed. "You’re so concerned about him. Why don’t I give you his number so you can call him yourself?"
"You’re really sothing else. So cold-hearted and vicious."
"Thank you." Raina was just about to hang up.
"Sis... Brother-in-law said that if my legs get better, he’ll consider ."
A wave of nausea rose in Raina’s throat, the sickening feeling making her whole body uncomfortable. "You got your wish."
"I don’t think you’re being of much use staying in the Lancaster family. You should just co back when the ti cos. I’d be a much better fit as Mrs. Lancaster."
Raina didn’t know how Mia had beco so spoiled over the years, completely devoid of any sense of propriety or sha. "Fine. But that’s only if you can stand up again. The Lancaster family would never accept a cripple as Mrs. Lancaster. Don’t get your hopes up just because of a few words from a doctor. If you can actually get up from that wheelchair, it’ll be a true miracle."
"Raina, you—"
Mia flew into a rage out of humiliation. ’That’s right,’ Raina thought. ’This is how she should be.’
Raina ended the call. ’What’s the point of her putting on an act in front of ?’
She distractedly placed her phone to the side. ’It’s better that Miles Hawthorne has disappeared like this. But the thod Caron Fairchild ca up with is too vicious. There’s a high chance it will actually force him out.’
For several days in a row, Ethan Lancaster returned to The Verdant Garden.
Raina kept to herself at the new hospital. Ever since Hannah Lynch ca and caused a scene, no one was willing to get close to her.
She ate dinner at the hospital before heading back. When Raina entered the house and was about to change her shoes, she saw Ethan Lancaster coming down the stairs.
"Don’t bother changing. Co out with ."
"Where are we going?"
Ethan walked to her side and opened the door. "I’m taking you to see soone."
Raina’s heart skipped a beat. She stood frozen in place. Seeing this, Ethan grabbed her by the wrist. "What are you spacing out for?"
"I’m not feeling well. I want to rest early."
Ethan shot her a puzzled look. "It’s still early. Besides, isn’t your cold better?"
"I... I really don’t want to go."
The man’s grip on her tightened. "Who are you afraid of seeing?"
"No one."
"Don’t worry. I won’t make you see the person you want to see the least." After saying this, he forcefully dragged Raina out.
Raina still felt uneasy. The feeling persisted until the car drove into a large building and Ethan led her toward the elevator.
When they reached the third floor, Raina looked around. She thought they had entered so kind of movie theater. Ethan led her to the entrance of the main hall, and only then did Raina realize it was full of people. Caron Fairchild and Al were there too.
"Fourth Master, Young Madam!" Al waved excitedly.
Raina took a few steps inside, fairly certain it was a movie theater. She just found it odd. ’Would a large group of n really be interested in sothing like this?’
Ethan pulled her by the hand to a seat in the front row. Only then did she notice a circular stage in front of them, roped off on all sides, like a boxing ring she’d seen on TV.
"What exactly is this place?"
"A place to have so fun."
Raina was growing restless, an inexplicable sense of discomfort welling up inside her. "Fun with what?"
"You’ll know soon enough."
Soone pushed a food cart over and placed a number of snacks and drinks on the partition between their seats.
Caron Fairchild was sitting behind Raina. He leaned forward and patted her on the shoulder. "Young Madam, there’s going to be a good show soon."
Raina tried to stand up, but Ethan held her down. "Where are you going?"
"I’m not interested in this sort of thing."
"You haven’t even seen it yet, how do you know you’re not interested?" Ethan glanced at her. "I really don’t know what you’re so afraid of."
Raina’s gaze was fixed on the circular stage. She was just plain scared and felt she couldn’t stay. Everyone else was laughing, but she alone felt like she was about to suffocate.
She lowered her gaze as the sounds around her grew fainter. Finally, the talking gradually stopped, and in the silence, she heard a set of footsteps.
Raina looked up, and there he was—the one person she wanted to see least of all.
It had been a long ti since she’d seen Miles Hawthorne. He hadn’t changed much. He was wearing a white shirt with no tie, and he looked quite worn down.
Raina swallowed hard. Ethan smiled, picked up a piece of candy from the partition, and offered it to her. "Want one?"
Raina’s eyes t Ethan’s, but hers were filled with utter despair.
